Hajj 2022: 1 million Muslims mark largest Islamic pilgrimage since the coronavirus pandemic
This year, the hajj in the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia is open to just 1 million foreign and domestic pilgrims who have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, tested negative for Covid-19 and are between 18 and 65 years old. Authorities estimate 85% have arrived from abroad.
Muslim pilgrims pray around the Kaaba at the Grand Mosque, in Saudi Arabia’s holy city of Mecca, during the annual Hajj pilgrimage. One million fully vaccinated Muslims, including 850,000 from abroad, are allowed at this year’s hajj in the city of Mecca, a big rise after two years of drastically curtailed numbers due to policies to stop the spread of coronavirus infection.
