DOHA: In the most recent operation against fake World Cup trophies reaching the market before the upcoming football tournament, Qatari authorities said on Wednesday that they had captured 144 of them.
Officers began an operation, according to the interior ministry, “acting on information concerning a website that promotes the sale of cups that replicate the genuine shape of the World Cup.”
It revealed a picture of the 144 life-size trophies spread out on the ground and promised “additional legal proceedings will be undertaken.”
FIFA, the governing body of football, and Qatari officials have recently increased their warnings against selling or purchasing phoney World Cup merchandise.
Following the sale of unique licence plates in online auctions in June, Qatar issued a warning to motorists that it was unlawful to display a World Cup insignia on their vehicle licence plates.Five persons were detained by the police a month earlier for selling fake World Cup-branded clothing.
