Denmark, which is the first nation to pay “loss and damage” compensation to the most vulnerable regions due to climate change, offered more than $13 million (100 million Danish crowns) on Tuesday to assist poor countries that have suffered losses as a result of climatic disturbances.
On the fringes of the UN General Assembly, the Danish Minister for Development Flemming Mller Mortensen made the commitment, stating that the Sahel region in northwest Africa and other fragile regions will receive the new climate money.
“I am delighted that we have decided to strengthen help for losses and damages connected to climate change,”
In a statement, he stated. “It is blatantly unfair that the poorest people in the world should bear the brunt of the effects of climate change, to which they have made the least contribution.”
