ISLAMABAD: Since the government was unable to select the chief diplomat, a “stopgap” arrangement was established, the controversy surrounding the secret diplomatic communication has placed doubt on the nomination of a new foreign secretary.
Asad Majid, who wrote the letter in March while serving as Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington, was previously said to be in line to become the country’s new foreign secretary.
However, the diplomatic cable, which the former prime minister Imran Khan has cited as proof of US controversy behind his removal through a vote of no-confidence earlier in the year, has reportedly prompted the government to review its decision as new audio leaks have surfaced, bringing it back into the spotlight.
According to a source in the foreign office who spoke to The Express Tribune, Asad Majid’s name was unable to be agreed upon, thus Jauhar Saleem, a grade 22 foreign service officer who is now serving as special secretary for Europe, was given extra responsibility as foreign secretary.
