Due to strict measures in the Defamation Bill 2024, even accurate news reporting will face problems, and anyone openly criticizing government actions may also be caught in its grip. In a democratic country, there is a need for balanced laws regarding freedom of expression, but imposing restrictions on expression is not the right step.
The Punjab Defamation Bill 2024 will apply to print, electronic, and social media, and lawsuits can be filed against false and baseless news. The bill will also apply to fake news spread through YouTube and social media. Actions will be taken against news spread to damage personal lives and public personalities.
Tribunals will be established for defamation cases, which will be required to make a decision within six months. Under the Defamation Bill 2024, approved by the provincial assembly, a fine of 3 million rupees will be imposed for false news or character assassination on TV channels, newspapers, and platforms like Facebook, TikTok, X, YouTube, and Instagram.
I urge all journalists to condemn such laws which restricts freedom of expression. It is fundamental right in a Democrat country for the freedom of media. I urge the government not to imposed ban on social media as it is a new revolution in modern world.
