GALLE: On day two of the first Test against Sri Lanka, Pakistan was bowled out for 218 after captain Babar Azam scored a resolute 119.
Azam led the tourists to within four runs of Sri Lanka’s 222 as he and Naseem Shah, who scored five not out from 52 balls in Galle, put on a 70-run tenth-wicket stand.
Prabath Jayasuriya, a left-arm spinner, claimed his third consecutive haul of five or more wickets to frighten the opposition batting, which fell to 85-7 before lunch and 148-9 in the second session.
With a four and a single-off mystery spinner Mahesh Theekshana, Azam reached his seventh Test century. The final Pakistan innings was ended by the star batsman being trapped lbw.
Yasir Shah (18), Hasan Ali (17), and Naseem, three batsmen in the lower order, contributed to Pakistan’s 133 runs for the final three wickets thanks to Azam.
Azam protected Naseem at number 11 by batting defiantly and facing the majority of the balls.
