According to independent news site Myanmar Now, two bombs went out at 9.40 a.m. local time at the facility’s parcels counter, killing three employees and five visitors inside Yangon’s colonial-era Insein jail. What sparked the explosions is unknown.
Soon after the blasts, police were nearby checking the explosion site, according to the media.
According to BBC Burmese, badly injured prison guards and messengers were taken from the facility, while others who weren’t seriously hurt received medical attention in nearby stores.
According to media sources, many cases that were set to be tried in the neighbouring court were postponed following the blasts.
When contacted by phone for comment, a military government spokeswoman hung up.
Since the military takeover last year, hundreds of political inmates have been transported to Insein, the nation’s most notorious jail.
