DUBAI: On Sunday, despite a crackdown by the authorities, protests sparked by the murder of a young woman in police custody persisted throughout Iran. A human rights group reported that at least 185 people, including children, had died in the rallies.
The largest challenge to Iran’s clerical leaders in years has emerged from anti-government demonstrations that started on September 17 at the funeral of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in her Kurdish town of Saqez. Protesters are clamouring for the overthrow of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.”The national protests in Iran have claimed at least 185 lives, including at least 19 children.
Authorities have claimed that Iran’s enemies, especially the United States, are behind the protests. They have blamed a number of parties, including armed rebels, for the violence that has apparently claimed the lives of at least 20 security personnel.
