KABUL: On Tuesday, over 30 Afghan women demonstrated in front of Kabul University after authorities allegedly kicked out residents of the dorms for disobeying rules. The Taliban has been limiting girls’ access to education, and the protesters claimed that all of the expelled students were female.
After Taliban soldiers dispersed the protest, organiser Zholia Parsi told AFP, “Today’s protest was for girls who have been evicted.”The reopening of secondary schools for girls, which have been closed since the Taliban retook power last year, was also demanded by the organisers.
Women have intermittently protested against the stringent limitations placed on them in a number of towns.Journalists are increasingly being banned from covering the gatherings, which are often quickly and frequently violently put down.
The demonstrators outside the institution shouted, “Don’t expel us. Education is our red line.”Unspecified numbers of students “who broke the rules and regulations of the university’s dormitory” were kicked out of their lodgings, the Ministry of Higher Education reported on Monday.
