Recently, Emily Ratajkowski has had a retro phase. The author-model toy has been seen wearing a variety of vintage pieces, such as a Hermès Birkin carryall and a dress by John Galliano with a newspaper print from the Tom Ford era. Ratajkowski resumed her mission today in Milan by selecting a pair of cropped Celine jeans with a golden chain design. No, these are from Phoebe Philo’s time at Michael Kors, not her time at Celine, which some people do refer to as vintage even though it was only four years ago! She accessorised the statement pants with a black turtleneck that revealed a hint of midriff, strappy sandals, and a saddle bag by Christian Dior.
All of the paparazzi-ready and news-making characteristics of a Ratajkowski look are present in this ensemble. Her pants come from a lesser-known but no less influential period of Celine, when Kors was in charge from 1997 to 2003 and produced a wide range of sexy, opulent clothing. The item worn by Ratajkowski is from the spring 2004 collection and was initially designed similarly. Instead of a turtleneck, the model at the time wore a long-sleeved shirt that just barely revealed her stomach. In 2022, Ratajkowski’s interpretation of the retro style feels completely appropriate. Although it is fundamentally still Ratajkowski, the turtleneck gives it a more smooth and polished appearance. Who doesn’t enjoy a throwback to Celine’s Michael Kors era?
