As part of the Commissioner Karachi Sports Festival, the city recently revived its cultural heritage by organizing a unique donkey cart race, predominantly featuring participants from the economically disadvantaged Lyari neighborhood. The race, inaugurated by Additional Commissioner Syed Ghulam Mehdi, commenced at ICI bridge and concluded at the Commissioner’s Office on Club Road, with Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab serving as the chief guest.
Abdul Khalid secured the first position, followed by Muhammad Javed in second place and Shahjehan alias Durga in third. Mayor Wahab presented the winners with their prizes and praised the event for celebrating Karachi’s rich cultural heritage. He acknowledged the people of Lyari for their passion for sports and their dedication to preserving local traditions despite challenges.
Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi emphasized the importance of promoting sports activities in the city to provide positive avenues for its youth. The sports festival, alongside the donkey cart race, includes events such as a cycle race, hockey tournament, and others, all aimed at fostering constructive engagement among young people.
Funded entirely by a private organization, the festival also features upcoming tournaments in tennis, squash, cricket, and basketball. The schedule includes a hockey tournament on June 25 at the Islahuddin Landi Kotal Ground in North Nazimabad, a girls’ basketball tournament on June 26, a shooting ball tournament on June 29 at the Korangi Number 5 Shooting Ball Court, and a cycle race starting on June 30 at Mazar-e-Quaid, with prize distribution at the Commissioner Karachi Office.
