GENEVA: Despite COVID-related declines in rhino poaching and the illegal trafficking in their horns, a conservation organisation warned on Monday that the rhino’s survival remains in severe jeopardy.
Poaching remains “an extreme threat” to the continued existence of the species, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).IUCN reports that 2,707 rhinos were killed between 2018 and 2021 as a result of poaching in Africa, the vast majority of which occurred in South Africa, primarily in the Kruger National Park.
The majority of rhinos in the world reside in South Africa.According to the Swiss-based organisation, rhino poaching rates in Africa have decreased from a peak of 5.3% of the overall population in 2015 to 2.3% in 2021.
