SRINAGAR: In an effort to influence upcoming elections, local political parties claim that India will register up to 2.5 million new voters in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) region, according to a top official who made the announcement late on Wednesday.
In 2019, India changed the Indian constitution to permit non-Kashmiris to vote and own land there, robbing IIOJK of its semi-autonomous status.
Hirdesh Kumar, the Chief Electoral Officer for the Indian government in IIOJK, told reporters on Wednesday that more than 2 million new voters are anticipated to be registered in the area before the local elections scheduled for November.
