ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif addressing the concerns of climate change, water security, and food security required prompt action to protect future generations from its effects. He claimed that the administration was fully aware of these challenges and that finding a solution to them was one of its top priorities.
The prime minister chaired a meeting of the federal cabinet at the Prime Minister’s House. The cabinet was given a detailed briefing on the impacts of climate changes in the country.
It was informed that Pakistan was among the top ten countries in the world with the greatest climate impacts over the past 10 years, despite the fact that it had generated only 1% more emissions than the rest of the world, which had exacerbated the effects of global warming.
It was stated that one of the main causes of Pakistan’s population growth was the changing climate, which had a negative impact on the country’s natural resources. In a press statement, the PM Office Media Wing stated that the urgent need for the implementation of the “Mitigation and Adaptation” mechanism in this regard.
It was recommended that a documentary showcasing awareness of Pakistan’s problems, the actions done to mitigate the effects of climate change, and COP-27 might be shown at international forums. The significance of implementing cutting-edge, international standards for scientific practise was also underlined.
The cabinet decided that in order to address these problems, the effectiveness of the duration of the public service messaging on TV channels should be guaranteed. Along with guaranteeing strict execution of climate change legislation, the issues of climate change and global warming should be covered in schools’ and institutions’ curricula.
The cabinet also emphasised the importance of preparing rain harvesting on a war footing and took into consideration a request to launch a pilot project in Islamabad as part of the same project. It also unanimously approved the creation of a cabinet committee comprised of ministers from relevant ministries and led by Sherry Rehman, the minister for climate change, who would give proposals for projects over the short, medium, and long term. In its meeting, the cabinet agreed with the ministry of finance’s recommendation to set the minimum Diyat amount for the years 2022–2033, which amounted to 30,630 gramme silver, or roughly Rs 430,000.
A summary of the Ministry of National Health Services’ regulations and coordination regarding the increase in the MRP of 35 drugs was also unanimously rejected by the cabinet, and it was ordered that no price changes of any kind should be made to medications without the consent of the federal cabinet. The cabinet also approved ECC’s decisions regarding the issuing of a GOP guarantee in favour of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) for a financing facility of US$ 142.0 million, which were made in a meeting on August 11, 2022. It also approved the following decisions taken in the meeting of CCLC on 15 08-2022:- 1. Authorization of Government Married Accommodation to Defence Security Force (DSF) Personnel: Amendment in Army Regulations (Rules)-1998 2. Amendment in Annex ‘A’ to Rule 11 of Scales of Rations and Supplies (Regulations), 2015. 3. Amendments in National Skills University Act, 2018 4. Appointment of Law Officers in Office of the Advocate General, ICT, Islamabad by Amending the President’s Order 1 of 2015 5. Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council (PVMC) Employees Service Regulations, 2022. The cabinet also approved inclusion of 10 persons on the Exit Control List (ECL), removal of 22 persons from ECL and grant of OTP (one-time permission) to three persons, on the recommendations of the ministry of interior. The prime minister and the federal cabinet, on the occasion, felicitated Minister for Industries and Trade Makhdoom Murtaza Mahmud, secretary cabinet division Ahmad Nawaz Sukhera, secretary ministry of industries and trade Chaudhry Imdadullah Bosal for the conferment of civil awards and appreciated their services.
