Polio
LONDON: For the first time in decades, polio is spreading in London, New York, and Jerusalem, paralysing tens of thousands of youngsters annually and prompting catch-up vaccination campaigns.
Throughout the first part of the 20th century, polio terrified parents everywhere. Mostly affecting young children under the age of five, it frequently goes unnoticed but can occasionally cause symptoms including fever and vomiting.
Unrecoverable paralysis is caused by about one illness out of every 200, and up to 10% of those individuals pass away.Despite the lack of a treatment, polio can now be completely avoided thanks to a vaccine developed in the 1950s. The disease’s wild form has nearly vanished from the planet.
