UNITED STATES: At least 16 people were killed in flash floods brought on by severe rains in the Appalachia region of eastern Kentucky on Friday. Search and rescue crews were searching for survivors using boats and aircraft.
The governor of the state in south-central America, Andy Beshear, issued a dire warning, predicting that the death toll from the extreme flooding would “become a lot higher.”Beshear reported that four of the six children among the 16 confirmed dead belonged to the same family.
Fish and Wildlife boats, helicopters from the Kentucky National Guard, and a flotilla of volunteers were searching flood-affected neighbourhoods on Friday for people stuck on rooftops and even clinging to trees.
Since the floods started Wednesday evening, hundreds of people have been saved by boat, and 50 individuals have been saved by National Guard helicopters, he said. The governor claimed that because many roads were washed out, “we still can’t get to a lot of people.”Some of the water rescues we need to perform are unsafe due to the high current.
