If the reports of Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa contacting American authorities to request an early IMF loan disbursement are accurate, according to former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan, “that implies we [Pakistan] are getting weaker.”
In an interview with a private station, the PTI chairman stated that it was not the army chief’s responsibility to handle economic issues. In addition, he questioned whether the US would want something in return for aiding Pakistan.
It was earlier today reported that COAS Gen. Bajwa has urged the US to assist Islamabad in obtaining an early distribution of $1.2 billion under an IMF loan programme.
Sources from the US and Pakistan told the publication’s correspondent Wajahat S Khan on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk publicly that the army commander had called the US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman earlier in the week.
