TOKYO: The suspect in the alleged assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will undergo a mental health evaluation.Abe was shot and died while campaigning on July 8 in the western city of Nara, two days before the country’s upper house elections.
Tetsuya Yamagami, the suspect in Abe’s murder, is being held in custody and is alleged to have targeted the former leader because he believed the guy had connections to the Unification Church.
According to unnamed investigative sources quoted by the Asahi Shimbun and other local media, the Nara District Court on Friday authorised the neighbourhood public prosecutors office to ask that 41-year-old Yamagami undergo a psychiatric evaluation.Throughout the mental examination, the suspect won’t be asked any more questions.
