BERLIN: In an interview with German newspaper Der Spiegel that was published on Saturday, the source of the Panama Papers, which exposed widespread tax evasion and fraud on a massive scale, expressed his fear of Russian retaliation.
He claimed to have proof of financial malfeasance by senior Russian officials and their friends, which helped finance the war in Ukraine, and the magazine cited him under the moniker John Doe.
When Spiegel questioned him about if he was concerned for his safety, he responded, Given that the Russian government has made it clear that it wants me dead, it is a risk I must accept. John Doe emphasised the alleged function they serve in Russia, where officials deny breaking the law, when Spiegel questioned him about the use of tax havens by “strongmen in autocratic administrations.”
He referred to the Russian leader as “Putin,” saying that he posed a greater threat to the United States than Hitler ever did.
