KARACHI: On Friday morning, two Pakistani women mountaineers made history when they ascended K2, the world’s second-highest peak at 8,611 metres.
Samina Baig and her team successfully ascended the formidable K2, making her the first woman from Pakistan to do so. Naila Kiani became the second person to reach the summit after Samina.
No other Pakistani woman had ever accomplished this feat.
On Friday morning, a number of additional climbers from various nations, including female climbers from Oman, Lebanon, Iran, and Taiwan, reached the summit.women

After the rope fixing teams finished their work late last night, and the first group reached the summit of K2 around 3am, the summit push began.
Samina Baig, a 31-year-old Pakistani climber, and other Pakistani mountaineers reached the summit of K2 at 7:42 am PST on Friday, according to her team.women
Samina Baig and her strong Pakistani team successfully ascended K2, the second-tallest mountain in the world and the highest point in Pakistan, at 8:611 metres this morning at 7:42 a.m., according to a statement released by Samina’s team at the base of the mountain.
The statement continued, “Grateful and blessed that K2 allowed her to stand atop this incredible mountain.”
Samina Baig is from Shimshal, a small village in the Gilgit valley. She climbed Mount Everest for the first time as a woman from Pakistan in 2013.
Eid Muhammad, Bulbul Karim, Ahmed Baig, Rizwan Dad, Waqar Ali, and Akber Hussain Sadpara are the other team members who will climb with Samina.
Pakistan’s Naila Kiani reached the summit less than three hours after Samina accomplished her feat.
Naila texted this correspondent via a satellite communication device to confirm her summit, saying, “Yes, Allhamdolillah.”
Along with Naila, Pakistanis Sohail Sakhi and Sirbaz Ali Khan also reached the summit of K2.
Plan to climb each of the 14 8,000-footers in six months.
On Friday morning, over 50 climbers succeeded in reaching the top of K2. This includes Kristin Harila of Norway, who summited K2 between 2:30 and 4 AM and has since made her way back to a secure camp.women
Harila wants to climb each of the 14 8000-meter peaks within six months. In less than three months, she had attended eight such summits. She will become the first woman in history to summit every major peak in a single season if she is successful.
Kristin A. Bennett of the United States, Frank Loke of Norway, and Liliya Ianovskia of Canada all joined her. They were assisted by a group of mountaineers that included Fida Ali from Pakistan and Pema Chhiring, Dawa Ongju, Pemba Tasi, Dawa Dorchi, Dawa Wongju, and Pemba Dorchee Sherpas from Nepal.women
youngest woman to ascend K2 without supplemental oxygen
In another development, 29-year-old Tseng Ko-Erh, also known as Grace Tseng, became the youngest woman in history to summit the mountain without using additional oxygen. She is currently the first Taiwanese to have ever ascended K2.
The three-person team leading her expedition, according to the organisers, had just reached the summit of the second-highest mountain in the world. They arrived at Mount K2’s summit at 7:35 a.m. Pakistani time.
The team also included two Nepalese individuals, Ningma Dorje Tamang and Nima Gyalzen Sherpa.
Iranian and Omani women reach the summit of K2
Afsane Hesamifard of Iran and Nadhira Alharthy of Oman became the first women from their respective nations to climb to the top of the K2. They were a member of the Seven Summits Treks team, and they made it to the summit shortly after the rope was fixed. He Jing, a Chinese woman climber who completed the mountain’s summit without the aid of oxygen, was also a member of the team.
Monika Witkowska from Poland, Vladimir Kotlyar from Russia, and Mingtemba, Pasang, Fura Tshering, and Ngima Sherpas from Nepal were the other team members.
On Friday morning, Nelly Attar, an Arab Lebanese woman, successfully scaled K2 as part of another group. Terray Ellington Sylvester of America, Claudio Cocho Javier of Argentina, and Krisli Melesk of Estonia were with her.women
Pakistan’s Inayat Ali also ascended K2 with them. Nepali Aang Phurba Sherpa, Siddhi Bahadur Tamang, Dorji Gyljen Sherpa, Kamdorji Sherpa, Lakhpa Wongchu Sherpa, Mingdongji Sherpa, Lakpa Bhote, Rinji Sherpa, Temba Sherpa and Lakpa Sherpa — who all were part of Madison Mountaineering — also summitted K2 early morning today.
Pakistan’s Inayat Ali also ascended K2 with them. This morning, Madison Mountaineering members Aang Phurba Sherpa, Siddhi Bahadur Tamang, Dorji Gyljen, Kamdorji, Lakhpa Wongchu, Mingdongji, Lakpa Bhote, Rinji Sherpa, Temba Sherpa, and Lakpa Sherpa of Nepal also reached the summit of K2.

A climber from Pakistan named Ahmed Hussain made history by reaching the top of G2 in just 14 hours after leaving base camp.

Stefi Troguet of Andorra, another female climber, also succeeded in reaching K2’s summit. Her ascent of the second-highest peak was accomplished without the use of oxygen. At 10:45 am, she texted to confirm her summit via satellite communication.
