Usman Khawaja, an Australian cricketer, claims that the Big Bash League (BBL) must be made available to private ownership if it is to remain competitive in the market for T20 cricket content.
The BBL, which takes place from December through early February 2023, will compete with a new six-team T20 event that South Africa will launch in January.
All six franchises in the South African competition were purchased by Indian Premier League (IPL) club owners, but the eight teams in the BBL are owned by Cricket Australia and managed by state associations.
In addition to receiving funding from the IPL, a new league in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to debut in January. The BBL, according to Khawaja, will soon reach a “fork in the road” as competition intensifies.
