COLOMBO: Senior Sri Lankan politician Dinesh Gunawardena took the oath of office as the country’s next prime minister on Friday, according to his office. The Indian Ocean country is now experiencing its worst economic crisis in decades.
The incident occurred shortly after security forces attacked and partially removed a protest camp on government property in Colombo’s major city, making at least nine arrests as the new government seeks to crack down on protestors.
Former Podujana Peramuna minister Gunawardena took the oath of office in Wickremesinghe’s presence while standing in front of uniformed military officers in a room full of legislators and officials.
