Recently, QinetiQ showed off the first-ever laser communication system ever created. An Un-crewed Air System (UAS) in the air was managed by a ground-based operator via control orders and sensor data.
According to QinetiQ, the mission communication system includes Free Space Optical Communications (FSOC) as a bidirectional link.
Prior to now, radio frequency (RF) technology were used to control airborne unmanned devices or drones. The drawback in that situation is that RF is susceptible to interference and detection.
In contested areas when the adversary tries to undermine the mission by changing the commands, laser-controlled drones might be quite useful.
