Tuesday saw Google make the announcement that Pakistan will now be the home of its Android Earthquake Alerts System. The search engine behemoth claimed in a statement that the Android Earthquake Warns System is a “free, useful Android feature that detects earthquakes across the world and alerts people.”
So how does it function?
Google claims that it makes advantage of the sensors in Android mobile devices. It added that consumers are alerted in two ways: via search and directly on the Android mobile device itself. “The system uses accelerometers in active Android cellphones to identify seismic events,” it stated.
The announcement reads, “The system sends almost instantaneous information to Google Search.” People will receive relevant results when they search for “earthquake” or “earthquake near me,” as well as useful resources about what to do after an earthquake. Users can disable this in the device settings if they do not want to get these alerts.
