In a remarkable medical achievement, Turkish doctors successfully separated conjoined twins Mirha and Minal from Pakistan after a grueling 14-hour surgery. The operation, which took place at Bilkent City Hospital in Ankara, involved a dedicated team of 60 medical professionals and was conducted in two phases.
The twins, born with their heads fused, were brought to Turkey after their family sought assistance due to the lack of suitable treatment options in Pakistan. Their plight reached Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who responded to their plea by promising that the necessary medical care would be provided in Turkey. The connection was facilitated by renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Owase Jeelani, who coordinated the twins’ care.
The twins arrived in Ankara in May and underwent extensive medical supervision before the final surgery on July 19. The procedure was led by Dr. Jeelani, alongside Turkish physicians Dr. Harun Demirci and Dr. Hasan Murat Ergani. The surgical team emphasized the collaborative effort that made the operation possible, with contributions from various specialists, including neurologists and physical therapists.
Following the surgery, the twins began to recover well, overcoming challenges related to their conjoined state. Namik Yasar Ozbek, the head of the Department of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at the hospital, noted that the twins had previously experienced difficulties with sitting and hand movements. However, post-surgery interventions have significantly improved their condition. “The babies are now doing very well, starting to use their hands and arms, and gaining head control,” Ozbek stated. He added that the twins would soon celebrate their first birthdays as individuals, a milestone that brings immense joy to the medical team.
Dr. Ergani described the moment of separation as unforgettable, stating, “When we successfully separated them, the entire medical team looked at each other and applauded. It was one of the most memorable moments of my life.” The emotional impact of the surgery resonated not only with the medical staff but also with the twins’ family.
Rehan Ali and Nazia Parveen, the twins’ parents, expressed deep gratitude toward President Erdogan and the medical team for their support and dedication. “We are very happy and indebted to everyone who contributed,” the father said, adding that they hope to meet the President in person to extend their thanks.
The successful separation of Mirha and Minal is not just a medical triumph; it also symbolizes hope and resilience. The twins’ journey from conjoined existence to independent lives showcases the remarkable capabilities of modern medicine and the compassion of those who dedicate their lives to healing. As they approach their first birthdays, the family and medical team share in the joy of this significant milestone, reflecting on the power of teamwork, innovation, and human kindness.
