The Kiwis, who reached the final and semi-final of the last two editions in the UAE and Australia respectively, won’t progress to the Super 8 round in the ongoing tournament in the West Indies and the USA.
Despite having two games left in the group stage, New Zealand has been knocked out of the race for the Super 8 round. Afghanistan and the West Indies have both won three matches each, sealing New Zealand’s fate with their group-stage exit.
Williamson’s side began their campaign with a significant loss to Afghanistan by 84 runs in Guyana, bowled out for just 75 runs while chasing 160. In their next match against co-hosts West Indies, the Black Caps fell 13 runs short of the target of 149.
Both West Indies and Afghanistan have defeated New Zealand, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea to secure six points each. With a maximum possible four points remaining, New Zealand cannot advance to the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024.
