In Karachi, the Sindh government intends to implement cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). This initiative aims to enhance patient care, facilitate research data access, and enable the hospital to formulate disease-specific protocols.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced during the 2nd Postgraduate Research Conference at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) that advanced AI technology will be utilized for predictive algorithms tailored to the Pakistani population and disease patterns. The Sindh government, in partnership with the Patient Aids Foundation, has enlisted PAXERA, a renowned firm, to deploy PACS and AI technologies at JPMC, similar to those used at prestigious institutions like Johns Hopkins Hospital and Harvard Medical School’s Mass General Hospital in the USA.
Shah emphasized that these AI models will be made accessible to other institutes, particularly in rural areas, to ensure accurate disease diagnosis even by less experienced doctors. He highlighted the significant growth of healthcare facilities in Sindh, noting the increase in bed capacities and budgets of institutions like JPMC, National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), and National Institute of Child Health (NICH) since their devolution in 2011.
JPMC’s executive director, Prof. Shahid Rasool, expressed gratitude to the government and the PAF for their support in transforming the hospital into one of the country’s largest healthcare facilities. The event also saw contributions from Higher Education Commission-Sindh Chairman Prof. Tariq Rafi, vice-chancellors Prof. Nusrat Shah, Amjad Siraj, and Gulshan Memon, along with Dr. Farhat Abbas, the Chief Executive Officer of Aga Khan University Health Services-Pakistan.
