BRUSSELS: The head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog announced on Tuesday that he will travel to Iran in the coming month for “vital” talks aimed at persuading that country to restart cooperation about its nuclear activity.
Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told members of the European Parliament that he would return to Tehran in February to restart a much-needed political discussion with Iran.
Such a trip would occur at a precarious time for negotiations being mediated by the EU to revive a 2015 agreement that was reached to limit Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions. The United States withdrew under Donald Trump’s administration from that agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in 2018, and Tehran gradually reduced its compliance.
