The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said that ten persons were killed in a shooting spree that took place late on Saturday at a ballroom dance club in Monterey Park, California.
Early on Sunday morning, the police department reported that the alleged shooter had fled the area and they were still looking for him.
The department also stated that no motive for the incident had yet been determined.
Ten more persons were sent to nearby hospitals for medical attention for their wounds; at least one of them was in critical condition.
According to US media, the incident happened about 10 p.m. near where a Chinese New Year event was taking place in Monterey Park.
Social media videos showed rescue personnel transferring injured persons on stretchers to ambulances. Police patrolled blocked-off streets near the shooting scene, which was reportedly at a dance club, as shown in the video.
Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia tweeted, “Our sympathies go out to families who lost loved ones tonight in Monterey Park, our neighbouring city, where a terrible shooting just occurred.”
