JERUSALEM: Defense Minister Benny Gantz stated on Monday that Israel would not participate with any outside probe into the murder of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.According to media reports, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has opened an investigation into the shooting death of the American-Palestinian journalist who was killed in May while documenting an Israeli operation in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin while wearing a press helmet and vest.
Gantz issued a statement saying, “The US Justice Ministry’s decision to look into the untimely death of Shireen Abu Akleh is a terrible mistake. The FBI and the US Justice Department failed to respond to the reports. There is still a lot of disagreement on how Abu Akleh was killed. In September, the Israeli military stated that she was most likely unintentionally shot by an Israeli soldier, though Palestinian fire was also a possibility.
