WASHINGTON: When he meets Xi Jinping next week, US President Joe Biden aims to establish principles for competing with China, but he will be open about US concerns, such as those about Taiwan and human rights, a senior administration source said on Thursday.
The official told reporters in a call about the discussion that “the president believes it is necessary to set a floor for the relationship and ensure that there are rules of the road that bound our rivalry.”
The White House announced that Biden will speak with Xi, the president of China, on Monday outside of a summit of the Group of 20 countries in Indonesia. This will be their first in-person encounter since Biden took office as president in January 2021.
