The entire world listened as the artist stated, “Meet me at midnight.” The ninth studio album, Midnights, has continued to set records in the days since its release.
Taylor Swift’s 10th studio album, Midnights, was released on October 21 and has already broken numerous streaming and sales records. With this album, Swift returns to both pop music and to more introspective material. The singer recalls 13 sleepless nights from her life.
The album received a lot of praise from critics and presently has a Metacritic score of 85 out of 23 reviews, which is considered to be “universal acclaim.” According to the EW review, “Despite the idea of restless sleep that permeates the songs, a calm acceptance lies just beyond her drooping eyelids. Swift may be digesting random memories—both happy and bad—in the last twinkling of light before falling asleep, but she isn’t upset or anxious about it. It is a cosy murmur that is covered in weight.”
It’s obvious that audiences enjoyed the 11-time Grammy winner’s latest release. Before Spotify stated that Midnights had surpassed all previous albums in terms of streaming volume in a single day, the album’s release date had not yet finished.
The world listened when Swift said, “Meet me at midnight,” and the album has only continued to set records in the days after. EW is gathering all the records in one location because there is a lot to process and unpack. Keep checking back because this list will be updated as final results become available this week
Sales
Through its first three full days of release, Midnights sold more than 1.2 million equivalent album units in the United States, with traditional album sales accounting for more than 955,000 across all platforms (which in this case is digital album downloads, CD, vinyl, and cassette variants). According to the article, Midnights’ vinyl sales alone are getting close to 500,000.
Estimates currently have Swift’s latest amassing between 1.4-1.6 million units in its first week, which, if it holds, would be her biggest debut ever.
This indicates that the record has already had the biggest sales week for any album since the singer’s own Reputation grossed 1.216 million in 2017 in just three days in the United States.
Spotify
As previously reported, on October 21, Swift broke the record for the most-streamed artist in a single day on Spotify, and Midnights became the service’s most-streamed album in a single day.
iTunes Music
According to the streaming service Apple Music, Swift’s release of Midnights has shattered the record for the biggest album ever published globally in Spatial Audio.
She also establishes the record for the most streamed pop album of all time on Apple Music
Vinyl
According to Billboard, the album has already achieved the single-largest sales week for a vinyl album since Luminate began keeping track of such sales in 1991 on October 22, just one day after its release.
Chart of 200 albums on Billboard
On Sunday, October 30, Midnights’ position on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Nov. 4) will be revealed. Swift will have 11 albums that have debuted at No. 1 on the charts if the album does.
