The postponement of the regularly scheduled meeting, which is alternately hosted by each cabinet of the EU, revealed a widening gulf between the two EU powers at a time when Europe is grappling with an energy and cost-of-living crisis brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Steffen Hebestreit, a spokesperson for Chancellor Olaf Scholz, declined to comment on the issues that prevented the governments from coming to an understanding.
However, he noted that “there are a variety of difficulties that we are dealing with at the moment.”
