According to Defense Minister Mariusz Baszczak, the first 18 Chunmoo rocket launchers would be delivered as early as 2023 to defend eastern Poland. The weapons are produced by South Korean company Hanwha Corp.’s defence division, Hanwha Defense.
The deal was reached while South Korean businesses were sending Poland their first shipment of tanks and howitzers.
In July, the two nations agreed to a $5.8 billion deal in Warsaw, which Poland claimed was an important step in its efforts to strengthen its military in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Numerous former eastern bloc nations have expressed security concerns following the invasion on February 24, which Russia describes as a “special military operation.” Poland, a member of NATO, has promised to more than quadruple the size of its army and increase defence expenditure to 3% of the country’s GDP.
Of the 180 tanks that will be delivered by 2025, 10 K2 Black Panther tanks were part of Hyundai Rotem Co.’s initial shipment. There will be 212 K9 self-propelled howitzers delivered by 2026, according to Hanwha Defense, which is deploying 24 of them.
Additionally, Poland has committed to purchase 48 FA-50 fighter planes from South Korea. The aircraft will be delivered next year, according to a July media interview with Poland’s defence minister, Mariusz Blaszczak.
