The goal of the “purely defensive” unit of Belarusian soldiers deployed alongside Russian forces, according to Minsk, is to protect the frontiers of the closely allied former Soviet republic.
“We reiterate that the Regional Grouping of Forces’ duties are entirely defensive. The statement paraphrased Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin as stating, “And all current operations are focused on delivering a proper reaction to acts near our borders.
Alexander Lukashenko, the president of Belarus and a close personal friend of Vladimir Putin, revealed earlier this week that the two nations had deployed military together but did not say where.
He said that an explosion on a bridge connecting Crimea to Russia, which Moscow has attributed to Ukraine, occurred at the same time as the creation of these soldiers.
There are concerns that Belarusian troops may help Russian forces in their valiant effort to seize and retain territory in east Ukraine as a result of the deployment.
Alexander Volfovich, the president of Belarus’ Security Council, said on Tuesday that those worries were unfounded and that the West was considering attacking Belarus under that pretence.
The defence ministry reported him as stating, “Unfortunately, the notion is being established in the West that the Belarusian army may engage in a special military operation on the territory of Ukraine.”
“European nations are openly evaluating their options for future action against our nation. The potential of attacking Belarus is also being considered at the highest levels of authority in Ukraine,” he continued.
Belarus is politically and financially dependent on its main ally, Russia.
Before Moscow began its military action in Ukraine, Lukashenko admitted Russian soldiers enter the nation under the guise of military drills.
