An explosion caused by a bomb in the autonomous Kurdistan region of Iraq’s capital on Friday resulted in one fatality and four injuries, including two ladies and two children.
An official statement made no mention of the victims’ identity or the reason behind the assault, just that “an explosive device put in a car exploded, leading to the death of the driver and the injuries of… two ladies and two children.”
According to a security official who spoke to AFP under the condition of anonymity, the driver who was slain was an officer in the Kurdish counterterrorism services in the city of Sulaimaniyah, southeast of the Kurdish capital Irbil.
Although it has long been seen as a sanctuary of calm in the war-torn nation of Iraq, the Kurdistan region has not entirely been spared from attacks and strikes from surrounding governments.
The autonomous area has built its infrastructure and projects more quickly than the rest of Iraq and is home to various foreign NGOs.
But given that it has most recently been the subject of attacks by both Iran and Turkey, it has frequently been caught in the crossfire of geopolitical warfare between nearby nations.
Iran attacked Iranian-Kurdish rebel organisations’ bases in Iraqi Kurdistan on September 28, killing 14 people and injuring 58 others, including civilians.
