BRUSSELS: The European Parliament held a debate about the humanitarian situation following the disastrous floods caused by climate change in Pakistan during its plenary sessions in Strasbourg.
Dr. Asad Majeed Khan, the Pakistani ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, and Luxembourg, participated in the special discussion.
Mikulas Bek, the Czech Republic’s minister for European affairs, and Janusz Wojciechowski, the European Commission’s commissioner for agriculture, respectively, launched the discussion.
Several MEPs from various political groups in the European Parliament (MEP) took part in the discussion.
The MEPs expressed their support for the people of Pakistan and emphasised the need to increase aid and support due to the extraordinary scope of the disaster. The debate also focused on the disaster’s relationship to climate change.
It is important to note that during the final week of September 2022, Ambassador Asad Majeed Khan briefed the key European Parliament Committee on Development (DEVE Committee) about the flood situation in Pakistan.
In addition to flooding a third of Pakistan, the deluging monsoon since mid-June has killed almost 1,700 people and injured tens of thousands more.
Ten times more intense than average torrential rains have also devastated roughly 45% of the country’s crops, seriously jeopardising the food security of the nation.
The administration has calculated that the calamity caused a devastating loss of $28 billion to the already fragile economy, mostly in terms of infrastructure and agriculture.
