In an effort to avoid raising the thermostat in order to save money, British consumers are hoarding thermal underwear, gloves, and dressing robes to help them combat the cold this winter.
According to John Lewis, the largest department store chain in Britain, sales of hooded blankets, onesies, thermals, dressing robes, and slippers have increased significantly in recent weeks.
The cost of living has increased significantly this year as a result of rising energy prices, high inflation on all items, including food, and an increase in mortgage rates.
That makes choosing to stay warm rather than cranking up the heat to save a few dollars an appealing alternative. According to John Lewis, its customers are purchasing more layers to get them through the winter.
Last week, sales of women’s winter thermals more than quadrupled from the week before, and a wearable blanket with a hood has become a top seller. Sales of dressing gowns increased 76 percent over the previous year.
According to Claire Miles, Head of Category Fashion at John Lewis, “we are seeing clients purchase with heat in mind,” in a statement on Thursday. “The cost of electricity is such a worry.”
