Based on an updated on-the-ground need assessment of the country’s flood situation, Pakistan and the UN jointly launched a flash appeal in Geneva on Tuesday afternoon for US$816 million.
Sherry Rehman, the minister for climate change, delivered a new flood response plan at the event that had been created in close collaboration with the Pakistani government and the UN.
The plan’s main objective is to give the vulnerable flood victims the aid they need.
Sherry Rehman, the minister for climate change, is physically present at the event in Geneva, while Ahsan Iqbal, the minister for planning and development, Ayaz Sadiq, the minister for economic affairs, and Hina Rabbani Khar, the minister of state for foreign affairs, are all participating virtually from Islamabad.
The UN is being represented by Julien Harneis, the Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Martin Griffiths, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization.
UN member states, as well as numerous UN agencies and humanitarian groups active in disaster assistance, are present at the conference.
