Shortly after a leak on the neighbouring Nord Stream 2 project was detected, Sweden’s Maritime Authority said on Tuesday that it had issued a warning of two breaches on the Russian-owned Nord Stream 1 pipeline in Swedish and Danish seas.
“On Nord Stream 1, there are two leaks: one in the Danish economic zone and one in the Swedish economic zone. They are fairly close to one another, a representative for the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) told Reuters.
According to the spokesman, the leaks were found northeast of the Danish island of Bornholm. What had started the leaks was not immediately apparent.
A second SMA spokeswoman stated, “We are maintaining additional watch to make sure no ship approaches too close to the spot.”
After a gas leak from the abandoned Nord Stream 2 pipeline leaked into the Baltic Sea on Monday, Danish officials ordered ships to avoid a five nautical mile area southeast of Bornholm.
Later same day, the Nord Stream 1 pipeline’s operator also reported a pressure reduction on both of the pipeline’s lines. The Nord Stream 1 pipeline operated at reduced capacity beginning in mid-June until it was totally shut down in August.
Later on Tuesday, a new underwater pipeline called The Baltic Pipe that can transport 10 billion cubic metres of gas per day from Norway to Poland will be officially opened.
