The city state’s national airline finished second to Qatar Airways, which received praise for flying consistently throughout the pandemic.
All Nippon Airways Co. of Japan and Qantas Airways Ltd. of Australia rounded out the top five in a strong showing for Asia-Pacific carriers. As the world works through its Covid-19 travel restrictions, business trips and tourism are firmly back on the agenda – at least in most places. The question is, who should you fly with?
Singapore Airlines Ltd. was named the world’s second-best airline at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2022, with Qatar Airways taking first place and Emirates rounding out the top three.
All Nippon Airways Co. of Japan and Qantas Airways Ltd. of Australia both performed well for Asia-Pacific carriers.
The awards also distinguished the best airline in each cabin class. Singapore Airlines won best first-class cabin, while Qatar won best business class. Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. received the award for best premium economy cabin, while Emirates received the award for best economy cabin.
In other categories, Singapore Airlines’ budget carrier Scoot won best long-haul low-cost airline; Singapore Airlines also won best cabin crew; and ANA won best cabin cleanliness.
“Qatar Airways was the largest airline to have flown consistently throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, with their network never falling below 30 destinations,” Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted said in a statement. “Customers have clearly recognised that determination.”
Singapore Airlines was judged to have the best cancellation record in Asia-Pacific last month, cancelling only 0.1% of scheduled services between the beginning of May and the end of July.
Passengers on other regional carriers, such as Air New Zealand Ltd. and Virgin Australia, were among the hardest hit during that time, with both airlines ranking among the top five in terms of flight cancellations.
An online customer survey in English, French, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese was used to determine the World Airline Awards, which ran from September 2021 to August 2022. The final results included over 350 airlines.
