The sharpest threat yet to countrywide demonstrators furious about the murder of a woman being held by police came from Iran’s army on Friday, which declared that it will “confront the adversaries” to maintain security.
Iranians have organised widespread protests in response to the death last week of Mahsa Amini, 22, who was detained by the morality police for wearing “inappropriate clothes.”
According to the army, “these vile strategies of the adversary are part of the desperate attempts to destabilise the Islamic administration.”
In order to maintain security and tranquilly for the people who are unfairly attacked, it claimed it will “confront the adversaries’ different plans.”
Pro-government protests and further demonstrations were scheduled for Friday, according to Iranian media.
The pro-government demonstrations, which will start after Friday prayers, were dubbed a “roar of people’s ardour against rioters” by Iranian media.
Iran’s religious leaders worry that the deadliest demonstrations in the history of the Islamic Republic may erupt again in 2019 over increases in fuel prices. According to Reuters, 1,500 people died.
In the most recent disturbance, protestors set fire to police stations and vehicles in Tehran and other places as indignation over Amini’s murder showed no signs of abating and there were allegations of attacks on security personnel.
