In a calamity attributed to climate change that has engulfed roughly a third of the country and is still spreading, the armed forces have saved an additional 2,000 people trapped by rising floodwaters, officials said on Friday.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), record monsoon rains and melting glaciers in northern Himalayas caused floods that killed at least 1,208 people, including 416 children.
The Pakistani navy has spread out the interior to conduct relief efforts in regions that resemble a sea while the UN has made a request for $160 million in aid to help combat what it called a “unprecedented climatic catastrophe.”
