Reliance on foreign AI solutions must be reduced

KARACHI: “Without developing local AI capabilities, Pakistan may become increasingly dependent on foreign AI solutions,” said ByeongJo Kong, Digital Technology Specialist (Data Analytics & Big Data) at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in response to an emailed query.

AI should address a country’s specific needs and challenges, says Fatima Yasmin of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Pakistan’s lag in AI adoption compared to its peers is evident, highlighting the importance of learning from India’s AI applications. For instance, India’s use of AI in Tamil Nadu to prevent elephant deaths on railway tracks and the introduction of Kissan GPT, a chatbot assisting farmers, can serve as models for Pakistan.

Ozzeir Khan, Director at ADB, emphasizes India’s potential as a major player in AI production and consumption, suggesting that similar AI applications can benefit Pakistan. Examples include OLAM International’s use of AI in the Philippines for rice processing and Singapore’s strategic investment in graphics processing units for AI development.

Mr. Kong, elaborating on the widening AI gap, stresses the importance of AI in boosting economic growth and productivity. Pakistan faces challenges due to its lack of AI initiatives, which leads to a brain drain and hinders technological advancement. To address these challenges, Pakistan must integrate AI strategies into its national development plans, focusing on investments in technology, infrastructure, and education.

However, Mr. Kong warns against adopting ‘copy-paste’ AI solutions that may not address Pakistan’s unique needs. Imported solutions could lead to inefficiencies, biases, and security risks. To mitigate these risks, Pakistan should develop its own AI solutions or fine-tune imported ones. Investing in local research, establishing partnerships, and creating a national AI strategy will ensure that AI serves local needs while empowering domestic capacity.

In summary, Pakistan stands at a critical juncture in the era of technological advances. Without a national framework and strategy for AI, Pakistan risks missing out on opportunities and jeopardizing safety, warns Mr. Khan.

Huge price reduction for the iPhone 15 in the face of fierce competition; view the updated prices here

Tech giant Apple is facing challenges in China and other countries amid close competition with rival brands. In response, the company has slashed the price of its flagship iPhone 15.

Apple is offering discounts of up to 20% on iPhone 15 models to boost sales. Buyers can avail of these discounts on Alibaba’s Tmall, with the 256GB iPhone 15 Pro Max now priced at $1,100. The 128GB iPhone 15 model is over 20% cheaper at 4,599 yuan, down from 5,999 yuan. This sale is scheduled from May 20 to 28. Despite these discounts, Apple’s mainland online Apple Store has maintained its prices. The discounts reflect Apple’s efforts to stimulate demand for its flagship product following a decline in iPhone sales in China and other regions in the first quarter.

Due to competition from Chinese companies like Vivo, Honour, and Huawei, Apple’s market share in China fell to 15.7% in the same quarter from 20.2% a year earlier.

A warning has been issued to the new Barcelona coach.

Xavi Hernández warns new coach about Barcelona and difficulties with club.

Days after Xavi Hernandez was fired as Barcelona’s manager, he issued a warning to his successor following Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Sevilla.

Xavi, dismissed last week despite having a contract until June 30, 2025, expressed disappointment in an interview with DAZN. “I don’t think our work has been sufficiently valued given the adverse situation we inherited,” Xavi said. “Barça were ninth in the table when we arrived in late 2021, and we finished second. In our first full season, we won LaLiga and the Spanish Supercopa. This year hasn’t met the required level, but it’s been down to details in key games.”

Reports suggest Xavi is set to be replaced by Hansi Flick, with an official announcement expected soon.

Xavi highlighted the challenges awaiting his successor. “Barcelona is a difficult club, especially with the adverse financial situation and LaLiga’s financial fair play rules,” he said. “They will need patience and resilience. The only thing that can save them is winning, regardless of their previous affiliation with the club.”

Following his lowest bowling statistics in T20Is, Shahid Afridi contacts Shadab Khan for Pakistan vs. England.

Shadab must be under a lot of strain, yet powerful people are able to get out of sticky circumstances, according to Afridi

Following Pakistan’s defeat against England in the second T20I at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham, former skipper Shahid Afridi reached out to leg-spinner Shadab Khan after he recorded his worst bowling figures in T20Is.

In the match on Saturday, Babar Azam’s side was bowled out for 160 while chasing a target of 184, with England securing their eighth win in the last 11 T20Is against Pakistan. Shadab conceded 55 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket, matching his worst figures from a Pakistan Super League (PSL) match against Peshawar Zalmi in 2021.

Afridi, speaking to a local news channel, revealed he had a chat with Shadab after the match to offer support and advice. “I need Shadab to deliver with the ball. Whenever he has performed, Pakistan has won. We had a detailed chat where I asked him about his guidance and identified his mistakes,” Afridi said.

Afridi emphasized the importance of confidence and proper guidance. “I called him because I know he is going through a difficult time. I always try to help and motivate players who are struggling. We discussed his approach and I hope he implements our discussion in training sessions,” he added.

When asked if Shadab had a mental block, Afridi questioned the absence of a leg-spin coach in the team. “Is there any leg-spin coach with the team? Saeed Ajmal was there, but he is an off-spinner. Ajmal should be asked if he guided Shadab and why he isn’t following the advice.”

Afridi acknowledged the pressure on Shadab but expressed confidence in his ability to overcome it. “Big players know how to pull themselves out of such situations. I shared a couple of issues I noticed with his bowling, and I’m hopeful he will work on those things,” Afridi concluded.

At the Royals, Kotian takes Zampa’s position; at the Titans, Sharath takes Minz’s place.

The Royals have just seven international players on their squad as they enter the IPL in 2024.

Mumbai spin-bowling allrounder Tanush Kotian has joined Rajasthan Royals as a replacement for Adam Zampa, while Gujarat Titans have brought in Karnataka wicketkeeper-batter BR Sharath to replace the injured Robin Minz for IPL 2024.

Zampa, who was retained by Royals ahead of the December auction, withdrew from the competition due to personal reasons. He had a busy season leading up to IPL 2024, participating in the BBL and Australia’s limited-overs series against India, West Indies, and New Zealand since the end of the ODI World Cup.

Kotian, previously on the radar of several IPL franchises, was not picked in the 2023 auction due to being listed under BCCI’s Suspect Bowling Action. However, he impressed in the Ranji Trophy, scoring 502 runs and taking 29 wickets, contributing significantly to Mumbai’s title win. He also scored a century batting at No. 10. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Kotian took nine wickets at an economy rate of 5.58 and starred in the final against Himachal Pradesh, hitting a six to secure the title for Mumbai.

With only seven overseas players in their roster, the Royals brought in Kotian at his base price of INR 20 lakh.

Gujarat Titans signed Sharath at the same base price after Minz, bought for INR 3.6 crore, was ruled out due to a bike accident. Sharath made notable contributions in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, finishing with a strike rate of over 185, showcasing impactful innings in the lower-middle order.

England had a “different level of mood” following Jofra Archer’s seamless return.

Chris Jordan praises his friend’s fortitude in recovering from a protracted elbow injury.

Jofra Archer made a triumphant return to international cricket after a 14-month hiatus due to an elbow injury. Haris Rauf: A “blessing in disguise” might come from an injury layoff

Fast bowler returned to Pakistan ranks for second T20I at Edgbaston on Saturday

Elite athletes often lack time, and in Pakistan cricket, players rarely take voluntary breaks. Haris Rauf faced this when he opted out of Pakistan’s Test series in Australia to play in the Big Bash, losing his central contract.

After an untimely shoulder dislocation during a PSL match, Rauf was sidelined for three months, missing several key series. Reflecting on his break, he found it beneficial for recovery and reassessment.

Rauf’s comeback in Birmingham was solid, taking two wickets for 34 runs despite an expensive Powerplay over. He emphasized the importance of learning from mistakes and maintaining confidence.

He discussed the challenges of returning from injury, particularly for fast bowlers, and stressed the importance of self-belief. Rauf is now focused on preparing for the World Cup, aiming to make his country proud.

Back in style: the stars that stepped up their game in IPL 2024

Some of the league’s biggest names stepped up their game and enjoyed breakout seasons. Here is a peek at them.

As IPL 2024 concludes, several seasoned players elevated their performances remarkably:

Sunil Narine: The Batter

Sunil Narine surprised many by returning as an opener and having his best season with the bat, scoring 488 runs at an average of 34.85 and a strike rate of 180.74. He doubled his number of 50-plus scores and smashed his maiden T20 hundred. Additionally, Narine took 17 wickets with an economy of 6.69, marking an outstanding season.

Jasprit Bumrah: Miserly Best

Jasprit Bumrah was exceptional in a high-scoring season, achieving his best economy rate of 6.48, surpassing his 6.63 in 2019. He was the most economical bowler in the powerplay (6.00) and at the death (6.06), conceding less than six runs per over in seven out of 13 games.

Virat Kohli: Strike-Rate Mastery

Freed by the Impact Player rule, Virat Kohli achieved his highest IPL strike rate of 154.69. His aggressive approach in the powerplay resulted in a strike rate of 161.47, significantly improving from his previous best of 139.54 in 2018. Against spinners, he struck at 137.08, his best since 2017.

Abhishek Sharma: Six Appeal

Abhishek Sharma, opening for Sunrisers Hyderabad, hit 42 sixes—the most in IPL 2024 and for an Indian in a single edition. He scored 484 runs at an average of 32.26 and a strike rate of 204.21, becoming the first batter to score 400 runs in a T20 league without facing 30 balls in any innings.

Sanju Samson: Consistency Achieved

Sanju Samson crossed 500 runs in a season for the first time, amassing 531 runs at an average of 48.27 and a strike rate of 153.46. His consistent performance earned him a place in India’s T20 World Cup squad.

Riyan Parag: Repaying Faith

Riyan Parag, after leading the runs chart in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, became the highest run-scorer for Rajasthan Royals and the third-highest overall in IPL 2024. He scored 573 runs at an average of 52.09 and a strike rate of 149.21.

Dinesh Karthik: Spinners’ Nemesis

In his final IPL season, 38-year-old Dinesh Karthik excelled against spin, scoring 63 runs off 38 balls without getting out, achieving a strike rate of 165.78. His overall performance included 326 runs at a strike rate of 187.35, briefly putting him in contention for India’s T20 World Cup squad.

These players, through their remarkable performances, made IPL 2024 a memorable season.

Jos Buttler will take a paternity leave and miss the Cardiff T20I.

On paternity leave, Jos Buttler will miss England’s third Twenty20 international match against Pakistan.

After leading England to a 23-run victory at Edgbaston on Saturday, which gave them a 1-0 lead in the four-match series after the initial game at Leeds was abandoned, Buttler left for London. He is soon to give birth to their third kid with his wife Louise.

He did not show up for the Cardiff training session on Monday afternoon, and it is thought that he will not play in Tuesday’s fixture. It is now unclear if he will make it back in time to participate in Thursday night’s series finale at The Oval, but it looks like he will be heading to the Caribbean on Friday to play in the T20 World Cup alongside the rest of the team.

Although the news may cause some short-term disruption for England, Buttler’s absence should guarantee that he remains part of the team for the whole of their World Cup campaign, which starts against Scotland on Tuesday, June 4 in Barbados. It was possible that he might miss a group-stage match because he had already said that he would be there at the birth.

As vice captain of England, Moeen Ali downplayed the importance of a change in leadership last week. “Obviously if it happens, then it’s a great honour – as it always is,” Moeen stated. “I’ll be alright. Nothing much will change—it’s just a matter of taking over from his work and he’ll take it again when he returns.

“Hopefully, the baby comes at the right time where he doesn’t miss too many games. For me, it’s just whatever will happen, will happen. [Deputising] is not really difficult, to be honest with you, because we speak often, me and Jos. We talk about other things, the team, and all that. We’re on the same page anyway.”

Buttler opened the batting and struck 84 off 51 balls, providing the foundation for England’s innings at Edgbaston on Saturday. Ben Duckett would bat at No. 4 in his absence, while Will Jacks and Jonny Bairstow would presumably go up a slot apiece. However, they could also add Sam Curran, a bowling all-rounder, to their lineup.

A case may also be made for Duckett to take Buttler’s position at the top of the order, allowing England’s first-choice batting lineup to bat as they probably will throughout the World Cup. Despite opening for the most of his T20 career, Jacks said on Monday that he is still “learning on the job” despite looking impressive on Saturday, smashing 37 off 23 balls from No. 3.

“It’s no lie that I’m new to batting at No. 3,” he stated. “The greatest thing I’ve discovered is the unpredictability of not knowing when I’ll go in: clearly, if I’m opening, it’s 0 for 0 every time, whether I bowl first or second. I know precisely what’s going to happen: I’m facing the swinging ball or, in the case of a spinner opening, I know what the field will be.

“[Batting at No. 3] is simply a different circumstance each time, which is primarily a mental issue. I know I have both the game and the technique. It’s simply getting used to coming in outside the Powerplay, in the fifth over: when do I put my foot on the pedal? Identifying what to do at the appropriate time is crucial. It’s all about the team, not you.

Mark Wood had a long bowl before Saturday’s match with his knee severely bandaged, and he might be in contention in Cardiff if England decide to be careful with Jofra Archer’s health after his international return. Despite England’s desire to give Tom Hartley his T20I debut before the World Cup, ESPNcricinfo knows he will not be included in this match.

In any event, Tuesday night’s match is threatened by inclement weather, however Jacks said that playing a truncated game may be beneficial preparation for the World Cup. “Preparation is not always ideal, but we have to be adaptable and T20 is all about thinking fast on your feet, and assessing the situation as quickly as possible,” he stated. “We’ll be ready for anything.”

Iran’s attack on Israel: Opening of new chapter in World Order

By Noor Ali

download 2 4

Eight months of wreckage, carnage yet the world is sleeping for some miracle to happen. They brutally slaughter children; the world calls it mutual damage. They killed more than thirty three thousand Palestinians, humans, yet UN is silent looking away as if nothing has happened. The magnanimity of disaster is unmatched, IDF vows to eliminate every human born on the Gaza strip by depriving them of food, water, electricity and any basic amenities, however the humanity narrative is somewhere lost; it was lost in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and it has been put to rest by Western Media somewhere under thousands of Palestinian corpses unable to be traced. The plans of US, Israel and Western countries were working well since they blocked all the incoming and outgoing passages of humanitarian aid and escape for Palestinian people. The Palestinian people have been heavily bombarded and killed in mass numbers as they moved towards Rafah strip near Egypt to seek some refuge and it appeared all in vain until Iran opened attack on Israel after giving it multiple warnings opening another chapter in the new World Order.

The Iran’s attack on Israel and the massive damage it has caused has broken the mirage created by West of unbreakable Israel’s Iron Dome. The Quran has already informed us in Surah Hashr about how cowardly Jews fight as it says “They will never fight against you as a body (in an open battlefield); and if they fight against you they will fight only in fortified townships or from behind walls. Intense is their hostility to one another. You reckon them united while their hearts are divided. That is because they are a people devoid of reason. (59:14)”. Similarly, the Jews of Makkah used to feel superior to Muslims in terms of warfare and the tribe of Banu Qanuqa challenged Holy Prophet (PBUH) for war by boasting its strengths. What happened afterwards will help us understand the significance of Iran’s attack. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) marched towards them with small army and the Jews retreated and hid in their large fortresses like the Iron Dome.

Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) asked his troops to cover the boundary of fortresses from all ends. After fifteen days, the Jews tribe of Banu Qanuqa came out of fortresses of fear of attack and surrendered unconditionally in spite of having more armory and men. Now consider the location of illegally captured territory of Palestine in the name of Israel which is guarded by Iron Dome. It is being surrounded by all Muslim countries out of which it has agreement with Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon and Syria is already in doldrums thanks to US unprecedented attacks in the previous years. However, Iran disrupts the whole middle-east game by launching three hundred missiles.

With complete support from China, US and Western Countries are aware what will be the repercussions of airstrikes on Iran. China has already broken the political, economic and strategic power of US, as through induction of Saudi Arabia and UAE in BRICS and with de-dollarization, it has opened new gateways for countries to get out from the shackles of US. Then the world has accepted the role played by China as the mediator (historic Saudi and Iran deal in 2023) instead of instigator taken by US. Then Iran is visiting Pakistan to further the support towards Israel’s apartheid towards the Palestinian people. The Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister is already in Pakistan and it is highly likely that with combined and cooperative efforts, the matter of Israel atrocities on Palestine will be raised in OIC. China has ‘no limits friendship’ with Russia and can ask for its support towards the cruel and horrendous treatment of Palestinian people. Moreover, Russia has already security alliance with Iran and has helped Iran to strengthen its defense against Israel airstrikes. All things combined means that if the war escalates any further, Israel is doomed to fail and surrender since it is being besieged from all ends. US Congress is already discussing the heavy costs it has to bear of Iron Dome Interceptor. Just one attack from Iran has caused a loss of nearly $1 billion overnight as per former financial adviser to Israel’s military and it costs Iran 1/10th or less to fire 300 drone missiles. Trump has already gained advantage politically by showing support towards pro-Palestine supporters as they chanted “genocide Joe” in the rally.

With no way to go, Israel appears to be left totally stranded and even if US Congress approves $95 billion bill for Israel-Palestine and Ukraine War, the end is near for Israel and US dominion as superpower is about to crumble in pieces.

The India-Afghanistan nexus

by omey aimen

India employs Afghanistan as a staging ground for terrorist strikes against Pakistan.
With Pakistan as its main target, India’s nefarious policy of supporting terrorism for its own ends has a significant detrimental impact on regional stability outside of its borders.

India uses Pakistan’s open borders to its advantage by actively supporting terrorism within the nation, creating unrest and division. India accomplishes this by utilizing Afghanistan, a neighbor, as a platform. Afghanistan’s borders provide India a way to further its goal of destabilization, despite Pakistan’s efforts to protect its borders with India.

This cunning plan highlights India’s contempt for international law and the integrity of national borders in addition to endangering regional peace.

With the backing of the whole country and its armed forces, Pakistan has been fighting terrorism for more than 20 years, effectively taking down terrorist networks inside its boundaries. Even with this success, subsequent spikes in terrorist attacks indicate that the threat still exists even after large-scale organizations and physical infrastructure have been destroyed by military action.

Increased efforts are being made to combat terrorism in the wake of recent terrorist incidents that have shook the country. Since Pakistan’s creation, the turbulent relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan has been tarnished by an ongoing lack of goodwill on the part of Afghanistan.

Anti-Pakistan sentiments have persistently increased, regardless of what government is in Kabul, and are frequently stoked by attempts to destabilize Pakistan with the help of India. Remarkably, a number of nationalist movements in Pakistan may be traced back to Afghanistan. The book, ‘My Enemy’s Enemy’, by Avinash Paliwal provides an insightful analysis of India’s strategic use of Afghanistan as a stand-in for Pakistan.

In the book, it is claimed that during the administrations of Karzai and Ghani, India’s RAW, which allegedly had ties to up to 34 Afghan governors, made considerable use of Afghan land. Two disclosures highlight the complex geopolitical processes that have shaped the long-standing competition between two adjacent countries in the area.

With 21 operational facilities in Rajasthan, India, and an estimated 66 training centres operating in Afghanistan, the NDS operated as an extension of RAW. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan were the main targets of these operations. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its affiliates were major players in KP and GB, while Baloch separatist forces focused their energies on Karachi and southern Balochistan.

The year 2018 saw the creation of BRAS, an organization that combined many Baloch terrorist organizations. Targeting Chinese interests in Pakistan was the main goal of BRAS, especially in Gwadar and Karachi, locations where Kulbhushan Jadhav was arrested from. The TTP and BRAS then worked together to intensify their destabilizing efforts in Pakistan.

It is impossible to ignore India’s financial backing of terrorist organizations and dissident organizations in Pakistan, such as the TTP and Daesh. Pakistan has provided the world with indisputable proof that India is involved in terrorist operations inside its borders. This claim is further supported by the arrest of RAW agent Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was apprehended for planning terrorism in Balochistan.

TTP, ISIS, and BLA terrorists operate out of Afghanistan and serve as tools of our enemy, taking advantage of any chance to obtain money in order to carry out evil actions. Without a doubt, these anti-state acts are sponsored, either directly or indirectly, by our nemesis. Such terrorist attacks are centred in Afghanistan, which is continuously used against Pakistan, supporting Pakistan’s claim that terrorist groups opposed to Pakistan, such as the TTP and ISIS, are regularly housed in Afghanistan.

Chuck Hagel, the former US defence secretary, has publicly admitted that India uses Afghanistan as a backstage area to carry out terrorist attacks against Pakistan. Pakistan was hopeful that after the Afghan Taliban took over as the ruling party, there would be a decline in terrorist occurrences. Regrettably, this was not the case, with the number of incidents rising. In the current situation, the Afghan Taliban are a menace not just to Pakistan but also to its neighbours, China, Russia, and the world community, since they not only equip and finance terrorist organizations such as the TTP but also give them safe havens.

The 33rd report of the monitoring committee assigned to ISIS and other terrorist groups, which was presented to the UN Security Council, reveals startling information on the ongoing existence of several terrorist groups on Afghan territory. For Pakistan, this confirms its long-standing fears about terrorism, and it is also extremely worrying for regional and international parties. The study reveals the multifaceted assistance that Daesh gives the TTP to strengthen its hostile actions against Pakistan.

Breaking the evil alliance that feeds terrorism and instability in the region between India and Afghanistan is crucial. Afghanistan must answer for permitting its territory to be used as a terrorist launchpad in light of its responsibilities under the Doha Agreement.

Furthermore, despite India’s lucrative market, the international community cannot overlook its role in financing terrorism. India has turned into a state sponsor of terrorism, and the international community must condemn it and work together to mitigate its negative impacts on peace and security in the region. In order to promote stability and prosperity in the impacted areas and beyond, it is imperative to break this nexus.

Thrilling tradition of kite flying in Pakistan

By Ibra shoukat

Basant Festival or Kite Flying Festival is better when it is limited to
the festival and the festival sanctions many things. Pakistan celebrates
Basant Festival in January. It’s time for spring to come and winter to go.
It would have been better if the festival had been limited to celebrations
and celebrations with various meanings, butit has lost the problem of the
day where it reveals all the negative aspects of the above mentioned.
Itis accepted that this postEid celebration is a place of happiness, but this

happiness should not be so expensive that it costs lives. The first reason
why kites are completely banned is the use of twine and rope made of
sharp glass and metal. The sharp glassinfused twine is also a deadly
weapon and can easily cut the throat if it touches any part of the neck.

Many accidents result in serious injury or death. During this period,
we should think about what we have experienced and how much damage
we have done to our holiday, which spreads joy and renews the spirit of
friendship. It would have been better if the festival had been limited to
celebrations and celebrations with various meanings, but it has lost the
problem of the day where it reveals all the negative aspects of the above
mentioned.

After the deaths due to chemical poisoning in Sargodha and Faisalabad
on March 23, the Pakistani government started taking strict measures
against kite flying across the country. The Punjab and Sindh government
have issued strict orders banning the sale and purchase of twine
rope. Punjab Chief Minister spoke about the law and order situation in
the state and called for crackdown on buying and selling of problematic
ropes. Following recent disturbing events, authorities took swift action.

The most horrific incident took place in Faisalabad; 22yearold
Asif Ashfaq died from heavy blood loss after his throat was cut with a
kite string while riding a motorcycle on March 22. Security camera
footage of the incident shows the injured person falling off the
motorcycle. The CM asked the police and municipal authorities to take strict action against companies producing glasscovered music.

Last
month, two people, including a child, died as a result of kite flying in
Punjab, and two people died as a result of electric shock.
The government has decided to conduct a doortodoor awareness
campaign to stop kite flying. Despite the complete ban on kite flying
during Basant celebrations this year, business owner’s preparations to
defy this ban are in full swing in Rawalpindi. It is important that by
promoting safety measures in Pakistan and following the rules regarding
the risks associated with glasscovered ropes, we can reduce the negative
impact and control it so that everyone can enjoy a safe environment

“India’s Regional Pivot: BIMSTEC”

Mishayam Jan Ayub

Indian political ideology is built on the philosophical postulates of Chankiya Kutalya; the concept of Akhand Bharat has been translated to maintain its regional hegemony and aspire to become a world power. In an intricate landscape of South Asian geopolitics, India’s strategic recalibration toward a regional cooperation framework has drawn considerable attention due to its unprincipled nature.

7205c7c1 121e 48b1 a7e5 dd736b41ccd0

India’s diplomatic relations with neighboring states reveal a discernible shift towards prioritizing certain regional platforms over others. This is evident in India’s role in promoting the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) over the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). India’s escalating hostility toward Pakistan has spurred efforts to undermine regional platforms involving Pakistan. India has sought alternative avenues for regional cooperation to pursue its regional hegemonic designs, leading to a renewed focus on BIMSTEC.

SAARC comprises eight member states including India and Pakistan. Some of the notable achievements of SAARC include establishing the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) to reduce trade barriers, promoting economic integration among members, and facilitating enhancements in trade volumes and investment flows through the South Asian Preferential Trade Arrangement (SAPTA). Cultural exchanges, climate change, public health, and addressing common challenges are other areas of success.

SAARC’s impetus has been retarded due to a skeptical approach by India. Resultantly, the desisting of the SAARC-Motor Vehicle Agreement (MVA), withstanding, the indefinite cancellation of SAARC summit member states due to the alleged adverse security situation in Pakistan has been another hammering blow.

Owing to economic prowess and its ostensible strategic importance, India’s advantageous position is augmenting its hegemonic designs and geopolitical complexities. Instead of opting for a cooperative approach to fortify SAARC, India shifted its focus towards another regional platform – BIMSTEC.

The domino effect of BIMSTEC fits in well with India and is becoming a catalyst for the attainment of its strategic role to isolate Pakistan through India’s stance of making terrorism a top regional priority. India’s invitation to members of BIMSTEC to the BRICS outreach summit is another step in this regard. Despite these calculated moves, BIMSTEC has not been as effective as India imagined.

Established in 1997, BIMSTEC comprises seven South and Southeast Asian countries. The main achievement of the organization is the annual BIMSTEC Disaster Management Exercise, the first-ever military collaboration among member states. Despite its potential, BIMSTEC has faced significant challenges like prolonged delays in implementing the Free Trade Agreement (2004), weakening BIMSTEC’s effectiveness.

Unlike other regional organizations like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), ASEAN, and G20, BIMSTEC leaders have not convened regularly, reflecting a lackluster performance in prioritizing BIMSTEC summits. Top of FormMoreover, territorial disputes between Bangladesh and Myanmar have overshadowed regional integration and cooperation. The resurfacing of the India-Nepal border issue and the release of a new political map have resulted in public resentment, entailing Nepal to boycott the BIMSTEC counter-terrorism exercise in 2018.

India’s intent to retain an active and lead role in BIMSTEC can surely entail consequences that can offset China’s increasing influence in South and Southeast Asia. For the same reason, India is also ambitious to include Afghanistan as part of BIMSTEC to curtail the Chinese growing influence in Afghanistan in general and Pakistan in particular.

Despite US reservations, India has welcomed Myanmar into the ring of BIMSTEC. India’s firm stance on Myanmar is the outcome of China’s growing influence due to the Rakhine Coast across the Bay of Bengal paving the way for the BRI. India, driven by its strategic interests, opted for dialogue over the isolation of Myanmar, like her policy of resisting calls to join the sanctions with regards to its approach for Ukraine vis a vis Russia.

The paradigm shift towards a forum like BIMSTEC signals a departure from conventional platforms like SAARC; thus reflecting India’s pursuit of regional dominance for isolating Pakistan and counterbalance China’s growing presence. This will have its long-term repercussions. Pakistan feeling the tremors will have a more pro-China lean. However, the prospects for an Afghanistan-encompassing BIMSTEC may be measured high on the scale. Ostensibly the overall spectrum of BIMSTEC may seem conducive to India but owing to many fissures arising from Indian designs will place the success of BIMSTEC in jeopardy.

Dr. Maqsood Jafri: An Enlightened Sage

By: Caroline Laurent Turunc

He is a poet, thinker , researcher, political activist, orator and a columnist. He is a dimensional personality. He perfectly expresses his spiritual thoughts and feelings allegorically with symbols in his writings and poems. In his poems, he tries to reach God and meet Him, as well as writes on geographically important subjects.

d7f2b4f2 e0c6 44ee 975f e9df35abee4d

He states that the desires and desires of his soul have become unbearable, that the universe and himself are nothing without Him, and that it is necessary to travel a long way to reach the divine lights in the sea of infinity.

He states in his poems that even the rains of mercy wait to mature and then reach the ground.
In every verse he writes, he gives advice and reminders that will shake people’s souls.
He does not forget to warn you to shake like a leaf but not to fall to the ground like a leaf.

He offers this to his readers with divine love. Even though he knows that weak personalities weaken him, he steadfastly continues on his way. He emphasizes with excellent visuals that the desire of his soul, which has come to earth to complete its evolution for centuries, will keep him strong, and that divine love makes him stronger than he is.

Like every believer, he longs for the Almighty Creator in his heart and emphasizes this in every verse. He is very careful about the negativities that may arise when putting his inner world into words.

He often states that he has no other purpose in this world than to reach what lives within him and regain himself for the unshakable faith in humanity, democracy, social justice and human rights.

From the day he met poetry, his soul was telling him that he had to do many things in this world as a harbinger and messenger of peace.
In every poem, he tells everyone that he is here to reach the divine light and that he exists for them.

Although, his mood seems a little hopeless due to the turmoil in the world and the cruelty of people, he expresses in his verses that good days will come. He sees light at the end of tunnel. He is very optimistic about human future.

He knows that there are heavens beyond the seas and that the Almighty Creator will appear to believers there, and he heard this information from many of his ancestors who lived before him and, just like his ancestors, he tries to convey this knowledge to others.

In his poems, he reminds of the day of Hidayetü’l-Kübra (Great Liberation), which is the eternal reward, and brings peace to everyone who reads each of his poems.

There are huge mountains in the sky that are habitable super planets, there are rivers flowing from their foothills, there is a wise tree that is considered the source of knowledge and life, and the paradise it describes is located somewhere.

In almost every article he writes, he successfully reveals that his country is a rose garden, that his country is full of sages, and that he desires to be the enlightened sage of the tree of life. Entering this world, including oneself, is as difficult and long as leaving it.

He is aware that entering the heaven of the god of light with the hope of attaining peace and eternal life is possible with tolerance and the richness of human emotions rather than hard work.
From the moment, I first saw him, I realized that he was a great leader who fought against good and evil tribes.

Willow branches emit a pleasant scent that mix with the scent of the meadow.
Poems like the hum of the wind blowing between the mountain and the sky whisper sentences with deep meanings.

In his poems, Maqsood Jafri reflects that although our mountains and rivers are different, we share the same sun, moon and sky. He doesn’t think bad of anyone, he sees everyone as himself and as a human, regardless of religion, language, race and color. His adoption of the slogan “We are the waves of the same sea, the leaves of the same tree, the flowers of the same garden,” is proof of his pure soul.

He is an author, who is extremely respectful, sincere, careful not to offend anyone, has good intentions, thinks about helping others rather than himself, and is loved and appreciated all over the world.

I believe that he will go to the great apocalypse without fear or sadness.
The simplicity and commitment, he has shown in this magnificent poetic and philosophic befit his fame admirably.

Ruud enters the final in Geneva. Ruud leaves Geneva with a triumphant third victory and heads to Paris.

Geneva: On Saturday, Casper Ruud defeated Tomas Machac, the man who had defeated Novak Djokovic, to win a third title in Geneva and take a trophy to the French Open. Seventh-ranked Norwegian Ruud defeated 44th-ranked Czech Machac 7-5, 6-3, in one hour and forty-seven minutes. Ruud, the second seed, is familiar with the clay of Parc des Eaux-Vives, having won the Geneva championship in 2021 and 2022.

Ruud finished second in the previous two French Opens, and a third victory in Geneva provides the 25-year-old with much-needed momentum as he heads to Paris. Ruud is the only player on the ATP tour with more victories this year.

The second of the four Grand Slams of the year, the French Open, starts on Sunday and is preceded by the 28-man Geneva competition. After defeating Italy’s very skilled Flavio Cobolli 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) in a thrilling semifinal encounter, Ruud was playing in his second match of the day. It was supposed to be Friday night’s match between Ruud and Cobolli, with a career-high rating of 56, but the rain kept calling.

“I’ll just take a shower, rest, have some lunch, and then start again,” Ruud said after his first win of the day.

The world number one Djokovic used a late wildcard to enter the Geneva tournament in an attempt to recover from a worrisome decline in form before his three-time winner Roland-Garros. But after losing 6-4, 0-6, and 6-1 to Machac in the Geneva semifinals on Friday, the 24-time Grand Slam champion was left feeling “worried” about his defence of the French Open crown.

Machac, the second-ranked player from the Czech Republic, achieved his greatest victory to date and advanced into his first tour-level final. This will drive him to a career-high 34th place in the world rankings. Tomas Smid made it to the Geneva final as the last Czech in 1987. Felipe Meligeni Alves, a Brazilian qualifier, will take on Ruud in the opening round of the French Open. Nuno Borges, the top Portuguese player, will take on Machac.

‘It is worse now’: The Bookseller of Kabul author Åsne Seierstad on returning to Afghanistan 20 years on

The novelist Åsne Seierstad’s calm, shaded garden appears a world apart from Afghanistan and the Taliban, even though it is only a short stroll from Oslo’s downtown. However, as she sits there sipping tea, she vividly recreates that other, dirtier, more chaotic reality. Two weeks after 9/11, Seierstad started that association as a freelance foreign correspondent, integrating herself with the Northern Alliance troops who would overthrow the Islamic fundamentalist state with the help of the West. She is one of the few journalists who returned following the frantic evacuation that terminated US and British backing for democratic governance twenty years later, spending time seeing the Taliban’s terrifying resurgence in power.

Two close accounts of the lives of families enduring those decades of strife and terror bookend her narrative. The Bookseller of Kabul, the first, shot to global bestseller status. However, that book was more than just a hit book. It became a ten-year test case for a variety of issues, not the least of which was writers’ rights to use other people’s life as material, after the bookseller on whom the book was based sued Seierstad in Norway for defamation and invasion of privacy. This month, she will release her second book, The Afghans, which she describes as a sort of sequel to the previous book,More a stepbrother or a cousin.” It provides a perspective on the current state of affairs in Kabul through three distinct, intimate images. It is a sobering and often frank portrayal of a city that has recently fallen from the headlines but is still a major source of division in the globe.

Seierstad’s resolve to have the reader view that recent history in particular through the perspective of women in Kabul serves as the unifying theme between the two novels. That decision was the basis of her legal issues with the bookshop. After accepting her proposal for a book in 2002, Shah Muhammad Rais (referred to as Sultan Khan in the book) allowed Seierstad to live with his family and at his house for several months. He probably thought the narrative would demonstrate to the world his unquestionable bravery in sustaining a broad bookshop in the middle of one of the most destroyed cities in the world for nearly 30 years in spite of communist and Taliban forces’ imprisonment, censorship, and book-burning rampages.

In addition to recounting that valiant tale, Seierstad’s work provided a frank assessment of the patriarchal oppressions prevalent in Khan’s day. At the time of the book, Rais was taking a 16-year-old second bride “according to custom,” much to the distress of his first wife and kids. Seierstad’s book told it as it was without passing judgement on the behaviour and without faltering while analysing all of its emotional implications. Seierstad’s description elucidates that the conflict she depicted was not solely between Afghanistan and the West, or even between conservative Islam and liberalism. Rather, it was primarily a battle between the oppressive customs of male dominance and the aspirations of Afghan women for education and autonomy on a daily basis.

The facts prove Seierstad’s understanding that there are still no happy endings in Kabul, only gestures of despair and struggle. If The Bookseller of Kabul continues to offer one enduring example of that continuing tragedy, her new book presents another.

Prince William and George attended the FA Cup final.

Prince William and Prince George appear excited as they watch the intense clash between home rivals Man City and Manchester United.

Prince William and Prince George attended the FA Cup final on Saturday.

After the two teams lined up prior to kickoff, the Prince of Wales entered the field to applause from the spectators. During the Man City vs. Man United match at a full Wembley Stadium, he shook hands with the winners.

The future king also had a conversation with Kyle Walker, the captain of Manchester City and an England player. William and George saw Villa defeat Lille 2-1 in the first leg of the Europa Conference League quarterfinal in April. Their first public appearance after Kate’s cancer announcement in March occurred this time.

William, the president of the Football Association, watched the match between Manchester United and Manchester City with his son Prince George from the royal box, looking excited. On Friday, palace officials announced William’s attendance at the game in North West London in front of 90,000 supporters.

In the midst of Kate’s health struggle, William and George’s entrance pleased the audience. The father and son pair stole the show with their magnificent presence. This follows after Rishi Sunak called an unexpected summer general election on July 4 and Buckingham Palace announced on Wednesday that it has cancelled events ‘which may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign’.

Prior to the Liverpool vs. Chelsea encounter in 2022, William was jeered by hundreds of supporters during one of his less than flawless FA Cup games.

Thailand rejoices with the return of US statues that were taken.

BANGKOK: At an official repatriation ceremony held in Bangkok on Tuesday, two sculptures that had been smuggled out of Thailand were welcomed back. Among them was a 900-year-old sculpture that had spent three decades at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Shortly before he passed away in 2020, British-Thai art dealer Douglas Latchford, who was accused of trafficking stolen artefacts from Cambodia and Thailand, was connected to a 129-centimeter statue of Shiva known as “Golden Boy,” which was returned to its original location.

The figure, which was on display at the Met from 1988 to 2023, was found during an archaeological investigation at the Prasat Ban Yang ruins more than 50 years ago, close to the Cambodian border. It is thought that Latchford smuggled it out of Thailand in 1975. After being connected to Latchford, a second bronze sculpture, known as “Kneeling Woman,” which depicts a 43-centimeter-tall female figure kneeling with her hands above her head in a Thai welcoming position, was also returned.

The pieces’ homecoming coincides with an increasing number of institutions around the globe debating how to repatriate stolen art treasures. During the repatriation ceremony held at the National Museum in Bangkok, Phnombootra Chandrachoti, the director-general of Thailand’s Fine Arts Department, expressed his gratitude for the artefacts and stated that they will be permanently placed in their motherland.

It’s Sana’s biggest dream that Pakistan will play in a final and win a World Cup. Fatima Sana sheds light on her inspirational cricket journey It’s Sana’s biggest dream that Pakistan will play in a final and win a World Cup

Since making her T20I and ODI debuts against South Africa in 2019, Fatima Sana has become a well-known figure in Pakistani women’s cricket. At the age of 13, Fatima began playing cricket as a result of encouragement from her brother Shehroze. She managed to live in a nation where cultural and religious customs prohibit women from pursuing careers in sports.

“My brother realised that I was a good cricketer,” said Sana while speaking to Telegraph Sport during a break in Pakistan’s current tour of England. “He told me every time, turn your arm and do some bowling. So I did and after two or three months, he chose me for a cricket academy with the boys. So after a lot of street games I started my cricket journey in the academy with boys and they were all bigger and taller than me because they were proper club members.”

She continued in the interview to say that she is motivated to advance her playing technique by the nation’s shifting dynamics. Fatima knows that her home country, which loves cricket, will benefit if her side wins. “Women’s cricket was not as popular when I started as it is now. However, after a while, it seemed as though the PCB [Pakistan Cricket Board] was supporting us much more after our women’s team defeated India in the Asia Cup or something similar in significant events. We currently have the Pakistan A team, the developing team, and the under-19 squad. Thus, PCB has now generated a great deal of cricket in Pakistan. The main issue is that men predominate in our culture, as we are all aware of.” Sana said

“A few of the boys were supportive. Some of the males did not attend due to cultural differences. When I joined the club and academy, my brother’s buddies were there, and they were really supportive,” she said. Sana entered the night competition in 2016, which was started during the holy month of Ramadan. For years, street matches have been dominated by men, but she defied the assumption that only men can play night matches.

“I was not interested in the tape ball event at the time, but my friend said it was interesting. I realised I ought to play since it was cricket. I played regardless of whether it was a hardball or a tape ball. I also won the titles of best batter, best fielder, best bowler, and player of the tournament. “When people fail to recognise that women are capable of playing, it hurts. However, many men now understand. To enable everyone to participate, those kinds of competitions must be held throughout Pakistan. And after that competition, everyone knows that we have women’s teams, so that kind of pressure really helped us develop,” she continued.

Sana has aspirations of leading Pakistan to victory in the World Cup. “Winning a World Cup and representing Pakistan in the final is my greatest dream.” And I aspire to be the best all-around player in the world. That would be the greatest accomplishment, she said.

“Being banned is not a badge of achievement,” said Jodi Picoult.

According to best-selling American author Jodi Picoult, “the loss of free expression is a very, very slippery slope” and “it is hardly a badge of glory” for school districts in several US states to have banned two of her books. When Picoult made this statement during her Hay Festival speech, she described herself as “very fortunate because I am at a place in my career when people who are going to be buying my books are not in school libraries.”

However, the author—who has penned 30 books and sold about 40 million copies—stated that younger writers, LGBTQ writers, and persons of color—those whose primary source of income is writing for middle grade and young adult readers—did not experience this. They are going through a lot of pain. Picoult said that the prohibitions had an impact on her books Nineteen Minutes and My Sister’s Keeper.

Nineteen Minutes

Books having explicit sexual content or themes of racism, gender identity, or sexuality have been removed from some US libraries and classrooms. There are many who disagree and think this is censorship. Certain state officials, like those in Florida, have declared that they are regulating improper and dangerous material instead of outright banning books. “I am currently prohibited in school districts in around 35 states in the United States,” Picoult said to the Hay audience.

They have no issue with it, he claimed, explaining why Nineteen Minutes, a film about a school shooting in the US, was not allowed to be viewed. The issue is that I use the word “erection” on page 313 of the document. “It simply makes me want to keep doing it (what I am doing),” she replied when asked whether it ever caused her to consider revising what she had written.

Picoult also talked about her forthcoming novel, By Any Other Name. This is not her first foray into historical fiction, but it is a parallel story about contemporary young playwright Melina Green, who is struggling to get her work recognised in New York, and her ancestor, Emilia Bassano, who may or may not have been the female writer behind Shakespeare’s work. “I feel like this is the book I have always wanted to write,” Picoult remarked.

In essence, the book explores how women’s circumstances have evolved and have not changed over the past 400 years. While Bassano was a real Elizabethan woman, Picoult’s book is obviously a work of fiction. By providing a number of possibilities that she discovered while conducting her research, Picoult does an excellent job persuading the Hay audience to at least entertain the possibility that Bassano actually wrote parts of Shakespeare’s works. It is a verifiable truth that in the early 1600s, Bassano (after known as Emilia Lanier) was among the first women to publish poetry in England.

Though Picoult is not convinced, there is another notion that she was the Dark Lady that appears in numerous sonnets written by the Bard. To be honest, I spent a lot of time researching this book. And I am not going to tell you what to believe; I am just going to give you the facts,” Picoult remarked. She went on to say that she believed Shakespeare’s plays were likely written by a number of people.

Academically frustrated

Picoult is well-known for her meticulous research. If she was an actor, she would definitely be an advocate of the method technique.

“Research for me is actually the most fun part of the book because I get to live other people’s lives,” she says.

“So I have done everything that you see in a book or everything a character does in a book.”

Living with an Amish family for Plain Truth and visiting Death Row for Change of Heart are two examples of this research. The latter, she claims, was the “most challenging… they worked so hard, I do not ever want to do that again!” This statement may surprise you. In contrast to many other writers, Picoult writes in a variety of genres, such as romance, thrillers, ghost stories, and historical fiction.

“I am really, really lucky. I can write about anything I want, and I somehow have readers who go: ‘Great!’ A lot of writers don’t have that luxury,” she says.

Musk makes a revelation that is not as terrible as initially believed.

Elon Musk, the creator of the artificial intelligence startup xAI, disclosed something that, while not harmful, is commonly regarded as such. The co-founder of ChatGPT, OpenAI, stated, “Probably none of us will have a job,” in reference to AI taking over human jobs, during a speech at a technology conference on Thursday.

The 52-year-old millionaire added, “You can do a job if you want to do something that is kind of like a passion. Otherwise, though, AI and robotics will deliver any products and services you desire. According to CNN, Musk further stated that in the future, employment would become optional and that universal high income would be necessary for this scenario to succeed, not to be mistaken with universal basic income.

“There would be no shortage of goods or services,” Tesla CEO said.

Since the beginning of the tech race, major corporations have invested billions of dollars in expanding their AI capabilities, introducing new human-like systems. When Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s generative AI chatbot ChatGPT hit the market in 2022, it shook the world. Since then, experts have expressed concerns about AI replacing human occupations, and the rapid growth has prompted them to issue a letter emphasising how AI poses an existential threat to humanity.

Musk asked the question, “Does your life have value if computers and robots can do everything better than you?” I believe humans can still play a role in this, by giving AI purpose.”

Partnership between Meta and LG Apparently in doubt as the Korean IT giant is currently “managing its speed.”

In February, Meta announced that it will be collaborating with LG, a major South Korean tech company, to develop an XR headset that would presumably take on Apple Vision Pro. However, recent claims from Korean media continue to assert that the collaboration is in jeopardy. According to a source in the Korean Economic Daily, LG is “currently seeking a new partner to provide an operating system and software for XR devices LG wants to launch next year,” further alleging that the agreement between Meta and LG has been fully dissolved. According to the article, Amazon might be a contender.

“There were some differences between LG and Meta while discussing XR devices. I understand LG requested an end to collaboration because it believed there was not much synergy from their XR partnership,” an industry source familiar with the matter told the Korean Economic Daily.

Still, it’s not clear whether it’s a done deal, or the companies are simply pumping the brakes. In a statement to Korea JoongAng Daily, LG says it “continues the XR partnership with Meta forged in February but is controlling its pace.”

In fact, early this year, there was a leak regarding the collaboration itself. Although that does not support this specific report, it does imply that credible information is being leaked by trustworthy sources within or outside of LG. In an effort to “generate major synergies in next-gen XR device development,” the agreement at the time was described as a way to “fuse” LG’s state-of-the-art product and quality skills with Meta’s diversified core technological features. It was also speculated that the two would collaborate to develop an Apple Vision Pro rival, with an anticipated 2025 release date.

Following the announcement that Meta would make its XR operating system available to third-party OEMs for the first time—including ASUS, Lenovo, and Xbox—all of these companies are expected to soon launch their own headsets.

Economic Stability and Thriving: A National Perspective

Dr. Aqeela Asif

Indications of a good economy in the current era can vary depending on the specific context and region, but some general indicators including GDP growth are at the top of the list. Pakistan’s GDP in 2024 is at $1,890.69 which sounds unusually low. Improving GDP involves various economic strategies and policies aimed at fostering growth and development. There are some potential avenues to consider.

Firstly, investment in Infrastructure is very important in this regard. Developing infrastructure such as roads, ports, bridges, and telecommunications can improve connectivity, promote trade activities, and attract investment. Investing in infrastructure in Pakistan could significantly contribute to economic growth in several ways. It enhances connectivity within the country and with neighboring regions. This facilitates the movement of goods and people, reduces transportation costs, and boosts trade and economic progress.

Secondly, energy infrastructure is the need of the hour. Pakistan faces challenges in its energy sector, including power shortages and inefficiencies. Investing in energy infrastructure, such as power plants and transmission lines, can stabilize the energy supply, reduce blackouts, and support industrial growth. Indeed, investing in energy infrastructure is crucial for Pakistan, ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply is essential for economic development, industrial growth, and improving the quality of life for its citizens. Some of the challenges Pakistan faces in its energy sector may be addressed on a priority basis including energy shortages. Pakistan has been grappling with energy shortages for years, leading to frequent power outages and disruptions in daily life and business operations. Dependence on Fossil Fuels in the country heavily relies on imported fossil fuels like oil and natural gas for its energy needs, making it vulnerable to price fluctuations and supply disruptions in the global market. Another important factor is insufficient Infrastructure. The existing energy infrastructure in Pakistan is outdated and insufficient to meet the growing demand for electricity and other forms of energy. High Transmission and Distribution Losses are making the situation more difficult for the promotion of economic growth in the country. Consequently, the transmission and distribution networks in Pakistan suffer from high losses, reducing the efficiency of the energy system and increasing costs. Environmental concerns are another addition to the problems list of the energy sector.  The reliance on fossil fuels has significant environmental impacts, including air and water pollution and contributing to climate change. Addressing these challenges requires significant investment in modernizing and expanding energy infrastructure, promoting renewable energy sources, improving efficiency in energy production and distribution, and implementing policies to diversify the energy mix and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. By addressing these issues, Pakistan can enhance energy security, promote economic growth, and mitigate environmental risks.

Thirdly, water management is a very important sector in this regard. Pakistan’s agriculture sector heavily relies on irrigation water. Investing in water infrastructure, including small dams and irrigation systems, can improve water management, increase agricultural productivity, and lessen the impact of droughts and floods. Efficient water management strategies are essential to ensure sustainable agricultural practices and food security. This includes improving irrigation techniques such as drip irrigation and sprinkler systems to minimize water wastage, implementing better water storage and distribution systems, and promoting water conservation practices among farmers. Furthermore, investment in water infrastructure, such as small dams and reservoirs, can help in better managing water resources, reducing the risk of floods, and providing water for irrigation during dry periods. Additionally, promoting water-saving crops and practices, along with raising awareness about the importance of water conservation, can contribute to more sustainable water management in Pakistan’s agriculture sector. Enhancing agricultural productivity through modern farming techniques, irrigation infrastructure, and access to credit and technology can increase rural incomes and stimulate overall economic growth.

Fourthly, the rapid urbanization in Pakistan has led to infrastructure deficiencies in cities, including inadequate housing, sanitation, and public transportation. Investments in urban infrastructure can enhance livability, attract investment, and stimulate economic growth in urban centers. Rapid urbanization often strains infrastructure in many countries, and Pakistan is no exception. As more people move to cities in search of better opportunities, the demand for housing, transportation, water, sanitation, and other services increases significantly. However, the existing infrastructure may not be adequate to support this population influx, leading to deficiencies and challenges in providing essential services to urban residents. These deficiencies can manifest in various ways, such as inadequate road networks, insufficient water and sanitation facilities, overcrowded public transportation systems, and limited access to healthcare and education. Addressing these infrastructure deficiencies requires careful planning, investment, and implementation of sustainable urban development strategies to ensure that cities can accommodate their growing populations while maintaining a high quality of life for residents.

Fifthly, the telecommunications sector is equally important to curing the fractured economy of Pakistan. Improving telecommunications infrastructure, including expanding broadband access and upgrading networks, can foster digital connectivity, support the growth of information technology and e-commerce sectors, and enhance productivity across various industries. The telecommunications sector can play a crucial role in revitalizing and strengthening Pakistan’s economy. It includes expanding access to high-speed internet and mobile networks can enhance connectivity across the country. This not only facilitates communication but also enables access to e-commerce, online education, telemedicine, and other digital services, thus boosting economic activity can be helpful for new job creation for the fresh graduates from the universities. The telecommunications sector can create employment opportunities both directly, through the deployment and maintenance of infrastructure, and indirectly, through the growth of related industries such as digital services, software development, and customer support. A robust telecommunications sector is fundamental for the growth of the digital economy. By providing the necessary connectivity, it empowers businesses to adopt digital technologies, streamline operations, reach wider markets, and innovate, driving economic growth and competitiveness at all levels including national, regional, and international. Mobile banking and digital payment solutions, enabled by telecommunications networks, can promote financial inclusion by providing access to banking services for unbanked and underbanked populations. This can spur entrepreneurship, increase savings, and facilitate economic transactions, particularly in rural and remote areas. Improved telecommunications infrastructure can enhance government services and administration through e-governance initiatives, such as online portals for citizen services, digital tax systems, and remote government operations. This can lead to cost savings, increased transparency, and better public service delivery. A modern telecommunications infrastructure signals to foreign investors that Pakistan is open for business and committed to fostering innovation and technological advancement. This can attract foreign direct investment in the telecommunications sector itself and in other industries that rely on robust digital infrastructure. Reliable telecommunications networks are essential for effective disaster management and emergency response. By enabling timely communication and coordination during crises, they contribute to saving lives and minimizing economic losses from natural disasters and other emergencies. Therefore, by prioritizing investment and regulatory reforms to support the telecommunications sector, Pakistan can harness its potential as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, and socio-economic development.

Another important sector towards the economic stability of Pakistan is investments in skill development projects through university-industry joint ventures. This can lead to poverty reduction, improved living standards, and a more skilled workforce, which are essential for sustained economic growth. Moreover, Pakistan has significant potential for tourism due to its diverse landscapes, historical sites, and cultural heritage. Investing in tourism infrastructure, such as hotels, transportation networks, and tourist attractions, can stimulate economic activity, create jobs, and generate foreign exchange earnings.

Furthermore, sustainable infrastructure development, including renewable energy projects and green buildings, can promote environmental sustainability while supporting economic growth. This includes initiatives to address climate change, reduce pollution, and enhance resilience to natural disasters. Overall, strategic investments in infrastructure can play a crucial role in unlocking Pakistan’s economic potential, improving the quality of life for its citizens, and fostering long-term sustainable development. However, it’s essential to ensure that these investments are well-planned, efficiently executed, and aligned with broader development objectives to maximize their impact on economic growth.

We cannot ignore the higher education sector and skill development in this regard. Investing in education and vocational training can enhance human capital, leading to increased productivity and innovation in various sectors of the economy. Creating an environment conducive to entrepreneurship through policies that support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can spur economic activity, create jobs, and stimulate growth. Encouraging exports through trade agreements, reducing trade barriers, and providing incentives for export-oriented industries can boost foreign exchange earnings and stimulate economic growth. Strengthening institutions, enhancing transparency, and combating corruption can improve the business environment, attract investment, and foster economic growth. Promoting R&D activities and innovation can lead to technological advancements, increased competitiveness, and the development of new industries. Implementing sound macroeconomic policies such as controlling inflation, maintaining fiscal discipline, and ensuring exchange rate stability can create a favorable environment for investment and growth.

Focusing on balanced regional development by investing in underdeveloped areas can reduce regional disparities and promote inclusive growth. The promotion of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is not ignorable. Creating an attractive investment climate through measures such as investment incentives, investor protection, and simplification of regulations can attract FDI inflows, which can stimulate economic growth.

In short, implementing a combination of these strategies, tailored to the specific context and challenges of Pakistan, can help to improve its GDP performance over time. Additionally, continuous monitoring, consistency, and evaluation of policies are essential to ensure their effectiveness and make necessary adjustments as needed, which can provide a promising environment to boost socio-economic development in Pakistan.

Peace in the Middle East : Need of Time

Dr. Maqsood Jafri

Today, I watched a video showing how brutally the Jewish rabbis and Roman officials crucified Jesus Christ. It Is a piece of some movie on Jesus. I am deeply grieved to see this scene and the religious extremism of the Roman Jewish rabbis, who were smiling when Jesus was bathed in blood. On cross he was sullenly fluttering like a bruised falcon. Highly tragic scene. The Rabbis sarcastically said:” Here is the man who claimed to be the King of the Jews”.

Judaism is a racial religion. The Ten Commandments given by Prophet Moses are the basic moral and social values and divine doctrines. The Christians and the Muslims believe in the Ten Commandments. Then why not to unite on the Ten Commandments? They are divine commandments. Jesus Christ said that he had come to reform the evils which had crept in Jewish society by the Rabbis and financially corrupt rulers. Both, the clerics and rulers conspired and bestially crucified him. According to the belief of Christians, after v three days of his burial, Jesus was seen by his disciples raised to life and he ascended to heaven.

Today, the Israeli Zionists are doing the same with the innocent civilians of Gaza / Palestine which was done with Jesus Christ by the religious hardliners. I wonder how the Christian governments are supporting Israel and providing Israel money and ammunition? The Christians are very humanistic and believe in the message of love and mercy as prescribed and preached by Jesus Christ.

They should have followed the footsteps of Jesus and stopped Israel to commit excesses. I wish the Palestine-Israel conflict is amicably resolved according to the UN resolutions and Two State Formula is implemented to avoid Third World War and make the Middle East an abode of Peace. Today, on Wall Street New York a Jewish rabbi, who is a man of conscience , on road is wavering the flag of Palestine and saying that Zionism is not Judaism and he is protesting against the genocide of the civilians of Gaza.

In America, many Jews have joined the protesting rallies and are condemning the genocide and demanding to end the war. All American and Western TV channels are showing the protests and the arrests of the protesters, students and professors. Better America should pressurize Israel to end war and stop genocide and agree on Two State Formula. Why America should be disturbed and disrupted and bear the brunt of the adamancy and obduracy of politicking of Benjamin Netanyahu? He is emotionally black mailing the Israelis to win the upcoming elections.

I feel it pertinent to mention the report of Human Rights Watch says that the Gaza’s humanitarian catastrophe demands an urgent response from the international community. It aptly writes:” Our research with those in power urges them to pressure Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza”. It goes with out saying that the portrayal of Zionism and the subsequent Israeli policies, particularly post 1948, reflect a system where the Palestinians are often seen through a lens that diminishes their humanity, dignity and safety, thus escalating and exacerbating the conflict.

Reports like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have highlighted policies that amount to apartheid, a system of segregation and economic stifling, aimed at ensuring democratic and political dominance of Jewish Israelis over armless Palestinians. Amnesty International had published a report captioned:” Israel’s Apartheid against Palestinians: Cruel System of Domination and Crimes against Humanity.”

In the light of these hard facts and bitter realities, what should be the role of the champions and custodians of democracy and human rights? Will they like to answer?

By Dr Maqsod Jafri

Irina Piraner Ms. Irina Piraner: with all due respect, I would like to briefly comment on your comments. Today, on the page of Human Rights Watch, some ladies seem are protesting against human rights violations. Some people have commented on it. All have agreed that human rights must be respected and protected. I agree with them.

As a recognized poet and philosopher and author of 32 books of poetry, philosophy and politics, through out my life, I have written and spoken on the restoration and promotion of democracy, social justice, humanity and peace. I have suffered through out my life for my ideas, ideals and ideology, especially during the dictatorship of the military regimes in Pakistan. Every human must struggle to protect human rights. There are no two opinions about it.

But your approach to the concept of human rights and pragmatic principles is very narrow and based on mere racial adherence and apprehensions. You have written:” Return Israeli hostages taken by Hamas home. Pledge to defend human rights of theses hostages and those that are murdered by Hamas on October 7th, 2023.”

No sane person and humanitarian would support the killings of the Jews by Hamas. There is no justification for the killings of the innocent civilians of any class, country, creed and color. Humanity is indivisible. This act of Hamas , is of course violence. This act was not done by the government of Palestine or by the people of Gaza.

Then, why the civilians of Gaza have been mercilessly being killed? Besides , the question arises what the fascist regime of Israel is doing for the last seven decades? The government of Israel is incarcerating, harassing, beating, abdicating and killing the innocent Palestinians. Even the kids and ladies are killed. Israel has thrown into dustbin UN resolutions and OSLO pact. Is it not against International Law?

What Israel is doing in Gaza? Incessant and brutally killing the innocent civilians of Gaza. The hospitals, the installations, the mosques, the buildings and university buildings have been destroyed and demolished. Nearly about 40 thousand civilians have been killed. Seventy thousand people have been injured. Is it not the violation of human rights?

The whole world is protesting against the atrocities of Israel being perpetrated on civilians of Gaza, but theses cries are like a cry in the wilderness. The Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu wants to win the upcoming election at the cost of the blood of the Palestinians. He has proven to be the Adolf Hitler. The Muslims have always condemned Holocaust. Is the present tragedy of Gaza not the Second Holocaust?

I salute those Jews who are rallying against the excesses of the Israeli regime in Gaza and are demanding peace in Gaza. They are chanting the slogans: “ Judaism is not Zionism”; “ End war”; “ No genocide”; “ Free Palestine.”

Are these demands undemocratic, inhumane or illegal? If not, then why people like you are not supporting these demands? Let us be honest and fair. Let us condemn the violation of human rights irrespective of racial discrimination and religious extremism. The future of humanity lies in peace and harmony. Let Israel abandon the quest and lust of Greater Israel and policy of expansionism, demographic changes and terrorism. Let us pledge: “ Humans unite in the name of Humanity.”
