Ayesha Jehanzeb, a TV anchor, disputes “reconciliation” with her spouse.

Private TV anchor Ayesha Jehanzeb, who became a victim of alleged domestic violence by her husband, on Friday denied reports of reconciliation as she refused to continue the legal battle in the court.

The TV host appeared before a local court in Lahore today at the proceedings of a physical violence case against her husband, Haris Ali, and recorded her statement.

The judge hearing the matter noted the visible signs of violence on Jehanzeb’s face, saying that it seemed like she had been subjected to “great violence”.

While recording her statement, the presenter said: “Whatever happened [with me] was brutality. It shouldn’t happen to any other woman. However, I accept the decision of the respected elders.”

Stressing that the decision was made in the presence of witnesses, she further said that she didn’t want to pursue the case against her husband, who was arrested after the matter of domestic violence surfaced earlier this month.

At this, the court remarked that Haris was being bailed but acquittal would be decided after the case challan.

This gave rise to rumours that Jehanzeb had “reconciled” with her husband, which she refuted soon.

The TV host said that she hadn’t made peace with Haris but what she said in the court was because “I don’t want my children to appear before the courts”.

She said that she would file for khula (divorce) on Monday and keep the custody of her children.

The TV host, who also appeared in the drama serial Jannat Se Aagay, had filed a case of attempted murder on July 10.

As per the charges, a domestic spat with Haris escalated, leading to the alleged horrifying physical abuse.

Women’s Asia Cup: India thrashes Pakistan by 7 wickets

India women’s cricket team thrashed Pakistan by seven wickets in their first match of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024, that took place at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Sri Lanka on Friday.

The Indian team continued to remain at the top of their game with the bat as they chased down the 109-run target in just 14.1 overs without much trouble after dominance with the ball.

Shafali Verma (40 off 29) and Smriti Mandhana (45 off 31) put India on top as the two combined for 85 runs before the latter was dismissed by Aroob Shah.

After losing the openers and Dayalan Hemalatha (14 off 11), skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues came to bat and completed the job for the team.

Opting to bat first, Pakistan didn’t have a great start as they had lost both of their openers — Gull Feroza and Muneeba Ali — after posting just five and 11 runs respectively, leaving their team at 26-2 in 3.5 overs.

Sidra Amin played valiantly but she got no support from the other hand as skipper Nida Dar (8 off 11) and Aliya Riaz (6 off 11) failed to contribute any valuable runs.

After scoring 22 runs on 35 balls, Amin lost her wicket after which Tuba Hassan took charge of Pakistan’s innings and played a quick 22-run knock on 19 balls with three boundaries.

Indian bowlers’ dominance made it nearly impossible for the Pakistani batters to score big runs and it looked that the Blues may restrict their opponents within the 100-run mark but Fatima Sana’s late 16-ball 22-run knock helped the Green Shirts score 108 runs before being all out in 19.2 overs.

For India, Deepti Sharma picked three while Renuka Singh, Pooja Vastrakar and Shreyanka Patil bagged two wickets each.

Ben Affleck cautions Violet, his “disheartened” daughter, over his pro-mask remarks.

Ben Affleck’s daughter Violet Affleck is “extremely disheartened” after her passionate speech about mask mandates got mixed feedback.

Per an insider, Ben has since given her a talk, emphasizing the need to be “realistic” about her expectations about her campaign and not expect any special treatment due to her parent’s celebrity status.

“While Ben and Jen will always support their daughter, Ben had a conversation with her and told her that she needs to be realistic with this because he doesn’t want her to waste all of her time putting effort into something that probably won’t make a difference in the long run,” a source told the Daily Mail.

“He knows how strongly she feels about this, but now that Violet is an adult, he felt that it was his duty to let her know that she is David fighting Goliath and that most people unfortunately do not feel the same way she does about this,” they continued.

They added: “He was also concerned that Violet felt as if her parent’s star power was going to be able to guarantee her the outcome that she wanted which, in this case, it is not.”

In her speech last week, Violet insisted that government hospitals and other areas lift the ban on masks and offer high-quality tests.

“I demand mask availability, air filtration and Far-UVC light in government facilitates, including jails and detention centers, and mask mandates in county medical faculties,” she said.

If Biden withdraws from the presidential campaign, who may Harris’ running mate be?

US Vice President Kamala Harris speaks from her offices in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House campus in Washington, US May 13, 2021. — Reuters

US Vice President Kamala Harris is on the Democratic forefront to become the party’s presidential race nominee if President Joe Biden stepped down as the presidential candidate.

Harris has earned favour of the Democrats after Biden’s weak debate performance against former president Donald Trump in June.

This has resulted in the Democrats – publicly and privately – pressuring Biden to step down from the race and aiming their support for VP Harris who was named Biden’s running mate for his election campaign.

Polls conducted by The Economist also suggest that 79% of the Democrats would support Harris if she is to replace Biden for the upcoming election in November.

If Harris is elected as the party’s nominee in the wake of Biden stepping down, then it would leave another seat vacant and that is of the running mate.

Following are some candidates Harris can pick as her running mate if Biden steps down and she is nominated for the presidential election candidacy:

Roy Cooper

Roy Cooper is the Governor of North Carolina and has known Harris since they were attorney general of North Carolina and California, respectively.

Cooper has also run on a ticket against Trump and won twice. In 2016, he won by opposing a bill that would have banned transgenders from using public restrooms as per their gender and in 2020, he was reelected on the basis of managing the state during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Josh Shapiro

Governor of Pennsylvania is a popular political figure and strange as well as many Republicans support him. He has handled several crisis during his tenure including the train incident in East Palestine, Ohio which is at the borders of the state he governs; Pennsylvania.

The 1-95 bridge in the State of Pennsylvania collapsed in 2023, Shapiro handled that incident quickly and the bridge was reconstructed immediately.

He has also won against Trump when the former president sued Pennsylvania and challenged the 2020 election results of the state but Shapiro secured legal victory against Trump.

Mark Kelly

Democrat and Senator Mark Kelly is a rare anomaly with him being a former veteran and astronaut.

The senator debuted in politics when his wife and former congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot in the head and had to retire in 2011 due to the injuries posed by the event. That urged Kelly to advocate to end gun violence in the country.

Back in 2020, Biden and Harris turned Arizona blue for the Democratic Party but Kelly won the election which put out Senator John McCain and then two years later, he beat pro-Trumpism Republican candidate Blake Masters.

Kelly is definitely an excellent pick for a running mate but he has a strong hold over Arizona and if the Democrats take him out of the state then they might lose the state.

Tim Walz

Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota is also a veteran. He handled the uproar of the “Black Lives Matter” movement after George Floyd was killed by the police in Minneapolis.

During his tenure, he has strongly worked for abortion rights in the state. Walz has also worked to provide free school meals regardless of the incomes of the students’ parents.

Walz could also help in making important states like Michigan blue for the Democrats as he has been holding down the fort for the party during the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin.

ECP to Implement Supreme Court’s Order on Reserved Seats

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced that it will implement the Supreme Court’s order on reserved seats for women and minorities in the upcoming elections. The Supreme Court had earlier ruled that the ECP must allocate reserved seats in accordance with the proportion of votes received by each political party in the general elections.

The ECP has stated that it will ensure compliance with the Supreme Court’s order and will allocate reserved seats accordingly. This move is seen as a significant step towards ensuring representation for women and minorities in the political process.

The reserved seats for women and minorities have been a contentious issue in Pakistan’s political landscape. Previously, political parties had been allocating these seats based on their own discretion, which often led to allegations of nepotism and favoritism. The Supreme Court’s order has brought clarity to the process and ensures that the allocation of reserved seats is fair and transparent.

The implementation of the Supreme Court’s order is expected to have a positive impact on the political representation of women and minorities in Pakistan. It is a step towards promoting diversity and inclusivity in the political process and ensuring that all segments of society have a voice in the country’s governance.

The ECP’s decision to implement the Supreme Court’s order demonstrates its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process. It is a significant development in Pakistan’s democratic journey and is expected to have far-reaching consequences for the political empowerment of women and minorities.

King Charles makes a vital decision as Prince William attempts to take over the realm.

King Charles III has made a significant decision to slim down the British royal family, aiming for a more streamlined and cost-effective monarchy. This move is seen as a positive step towards a more efficient and modern royal family, and Prince William, the Prince of Wales, is in full support of his father’s decision. The plan is to have a small, tight unit of working royals who can be accountable to the public purse, reducing the financial burden on taxpayers and making the monarchy more relevant in modern times.

Prince William has already been experimenting with this approach, drafting in his cousins to attend events such as garden parties, allowing the monarchy to maintain its traditions while also being more inclusive and diverse. With King Charles III currently battling cancer and stepping back from public-facing duties, Prince William is expected to play a bigger role in terms of public appearances and covering for official duties. He will be the next in line to the throne and will be expected to step up in his father’s place, ensuring the smooth continuation of the monarchy.

This decision marks a significant shift in the way the royal family operates, and it is seen as a necessary step to ensure the long-term survival and relevance of the monarchy. By streamlining the royal family and making it more accountable to the public, King Charles III and Prince William are demonstrating their commitment to adapting to changing times and being more in tune with the needs and expectations of the British people. As the royal family continues to evolve, it is clear that Prince William will play a vital role in shaping its future and ensuring its continued relevance in modern society.

Ellen DeGeneres says she ‘wasn’t the monster’ amid toxic workplace incident.

Ellen DeGeneres has finally broken her silence on the toxic workplace allegations that have been plaguing her talk show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”, for months. In a recent interview, DeGeneres denied the allegations, stating that she wasn’t the “monster” portrayed in the media. She claimed that she wasn’t aware of the toxic work environment and would have done something if she had known. However, her denial has been met with skepticism by many, who point out that as the show’s host and executive producer, she must have been aware of the goings-on behind the scenes.

DeGeneres has also apologized for the harm caused to her staff and acknowledged that there were problems with her show’s workplace culture. However, she has also shifted some of the blame to her producers and staff, stating that she had put her trust in them to manage the day-to-day operations. This move has been seen by many as a cop-out, and DeGeneres has been criticized for not taking full responsibility for the toxic work environment.

Despite the controversy, DeGeneres has recently launched a stand-up comedy tour, “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour”, where she has addressed the allegations and the ending of her talk show. She has joked about the situation and stated that she doesn’t hold onto grudges or seek revenge. However, her jokes have been met with mixed reactions, with some people finding them funny and others seeing them as insensitive.

The allegations against DeGeneres have had a significant impact on her legacy as a comedian and TV host. Many have questioned how she could have allowed such a toxic work environment to exist on her show, and some have even called for her to be canceled. While DeGeneres has tried to move on from the controversy, it remains to be seen how her career will recover in the long term. One thing is certain, however: the allegations against DeGeneres have sparked an important conversation about workplace culture and accountability in the entertainment industry.

JCP ‘approves’ appointment of two ad hoc justices to the Supreme Court despite criticism

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has sparked controversy by approving the appointment of two ad hoc judges to the Supreme Court for a period of one year. The appointed judges, Justice (retd) Tariq Masood and Justice (retd) Mazhar Alam Miankhel, are former judges of the Supreme Court who retired in March 2024 and July 2022, respectively. The JCP’s decision to appoint ad hoc judges is aimed at reducing the pendency of cases in the Supreme Court, which has been struggling with a backlog of over 2.26 million cases as of 2023.

However, the appointment of ad hoc judges has been met with opposition from the Pakistan Bar Council, which has consistently argued that such appointments undermine the independence of the judiciary. The Council has expressed concerns that ad hoc judges may not have the same level of independence as permanent judges, which could compromise the integrity of the judicial process.

Despite these concerns, the JCP has defended its decision, arguing that the appointment of ad hoc judges is necessary to address the pressing issue of case backlog in the Supreme Court. The Commission has emphasized that the appointments are temporary and will only be for a period of one year, during which time the ad hoc judges will focus on clearing the backlog of cases.

While the intention behind the appointments may be genuine, the controversy surrounding the issue highlights the need for a more permanent solution to the problem of case backlog in the Supreme Court. The judiciary must ensure that any measures taken to address this issue do not compromise the independence and integrity of the judicial process. Ultimately, the appointment of ad hoc judges is a temporary fix, and the JCP must work towards finding a more sustainable solution to this pressing problem.

TLP called off days-long Faizabad sit-in after reaching a deal with the government.

After days of intense protests and negotiations, the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) has finally called off its sit-in at Faizabad, Rawalpindi, following a breakthrough agreement with the government. The TLP leadership announced the decision to end the protest after a meeting with a government delegation, led by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, who played a crucial role in mediating the talks.

The agreement marks a significant development in the ongoing political crisis in Pakistan, as the TLP’s protest had caused widespread disruptions and tensions. The government’s concession to TLP’s demands is seen as a relief for the ruling party, which was facing mounting pressure to resolve the crisis. However, critics argue that the government’s move may embolden extremist elements and undermine the rule of law.

The key points of the agreement include the release of TLP workers and leaders arrested during the protest, dropping of cases registered against them, implementation of the agreement reached with TLP in 2020, and the release of TLP chief Saad Rizvi, who was arrested in April. TLP leader Khadim Hussain Rizvi praised the government for accepting their demands and thanked the protesters for their patience and perseverance.

The agreement also raises questions about the government’s ability to maintain law and order in the face of religious extremism. While the government may have averted a short-term crisis, the long-term implications of this agreement remain to be seen. The TLP’s protest was not just about political grievances but also about religious ideology, which has far-reaching consequences for Pakistan’s social and political fabric.

In the coming days and weeks, it will be crucial to monitor how the government implements the agreement and whether it will take concrete steps to address the underlying issues that led to the crisis. Moreover, the international community will be watching closely to see how Pakistan navigates this complex situation, balancing its commitment to human rights and the rule of law with the need to maintain social cohesion and stability.

Elvis Presley’s ex-wife Priscilla launches a lawsuit for financial abuse.

Priscilla Presley, the ex-wife of the legendary musician Elvis Presley, has filed a lawsuit against her former business associates, Brigitte Kruse and Kevin Fialko, alleging financial elder abuse and fraud. The lawsuit claims that the defendants took advantage of Presley’s trust and exploited her for their own financial gain, misappropriating over $1 million of her funds.

According to the lawsuit, Kruse and Fialko coerced Presley into giving them power of attorney, control over her family and personal trusts, and control over her bank accounts. This allowed them to isolate Presley from her loved ones and force her into a form of indentured servitude, where she was forced to work to generate revenue for them. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants’ actions caused Presley significant financial and emotional distress.

Presley is seeking $1 million in damages and wants the contracts she signed with the defendants to be voided. This is not the first time Presley has been involved in a legal dispute, as she previously settled a dispute with her granddaughter over Lisa Marie Presley’s estate. The lawsuit is ongoing, with Kruse’s legal team stating that they have not been served with a copy of the filing and are unable to comment.

The allegations against Kruse and Fialko are serious and highlight the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals, especially the elderly, from financial exploitation. Presley’s lawsuit serves as a reminder that financial abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of their wealth or status, and that it is essential to be vigilant in protecting one’s financial well-being. As the lawsuit continues, it is hoped that justice will be served, and Presley will be able to regain control over her finances and her life.

Another judge rejects offer as JCP meets to nominate ad hoc judges.

Justice (retired) Mazhar Alam Miankhel has declined an offer to become an ad hoc judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, citing personal reasons, according to sources. He is the third judge to turn down this offer, following Mushir Alam and Maqbool Baqar, who also refused appointments meant to address a backlog of cases in the Supreme Court.

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) met in Islamabad to discuss the appointments of four ad hoc judges for a three-year term, including Sardar Tariq Masood, Alam, Baqar, and Miankhel. However, Miankhel decided not to accept the offer due to personal reasons, sources told Geo News.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has voiced opposition to these appointments, suggesting that they might compromise judicial independence. PTI’s Omar Ayub wrote to JCP members expressing his concerns and urging the rejection of the ad hoc judge appointments. He noted that the parliament’s committee had not been consulted, leaving PTI lawmakers without a platform to express their concerns.

Justice Alam declined the offer due to his engagement in philanthropic work post-retirement, while Baqar cited personal reasons and dismissed criticisms of the ad hoc appointments as baseless. The government supports the appointments, arguing that they are necessary and lawful to manage the case backlog.

Karachi heat wave: Lawyers request exemption from wearing black coats.

Lawyers in Karachi are seeking relief from the sweltering heat by requesting an exemption from wearing their traditional black coats. The ongoing heat wave in the city has made it unbearable for them to perform their duties while clad in the heavy, dark attire. With temperatures soaring to 37°C, which feels like a scorching 54°C due to the heat index, the lawyers are not only struggling to function but also facing health risks.

The Karachi Bar Association has taken up the matter and written to the session judges, requesting a 10-day exemption from wearing black coats. This move is aimed at providing some respite to the lawyers who are already grappling with the extreme weather conditions. The association has highlighted the difficulties faced by lawyers in performing their tasks while wearing black coats, which are absorbing the heat and making it even more challenging for them to work.

While the lawyers await a response to their request, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted some relief in sight. According to their forecast, sea breezes are expected to start in Karachi from Thursday evening, which should bring down the mercury to 36°C to 38°C. Although this is still relatively hot, it will provide some respite from the current extreme temperatures.

The request from the lawyers highlights the need for adaptable and practical solutions to cope with the extreme weather conditions. As the city struggles to manage the heat wave, it is essential to prioritize the well-being and safety of all individuals, including lawyers who are essential to the functioning of the justice system. By seeking an exemption from wearing black coats, the lawyers are taking a proactive step towards mitigating the effects of the heat wave and ensuring their own health and productivity.

Can limiting screen time to three hours help children’s mental health?

Limiting screen time to three hours a day can have a significant impact on children’s mental health. Excessive screen time has been linked to various negative effects on children’s emotional and psychological well-being, including increased risk of depression, anxiety, and attention problems.

Reducing screen time can help children develop healthier habits and improve their mental health in several ways. Firstly, it can help them engage in more physical activities, which are essential for overall health and well-being. Physical activity has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve mood, and enhance sleep quality.

Secondly, limiting screen time can encourage children to explore other interests and hobbies, such as reading, drawing, or socializing with friends and family. These activities can help children develop important social skills, build relationships, and foster creativity and imagination.

Thirdly, reducing screen time can help children develop better sleep habits. Exposure to screens and the constant notifications from devices can interfere with sleep patterns, leading to sleep deprivation and related mental health issues. By limiting screen time, children can establish a consistent sleep schedule and improve the quality of their sleep.

Fourthly, limiting screen time can help children reduce their exposure to cyberbullying, online harassment, and other forms of digital toxicity. These experiences can have serious negative effects on children’s mental health, including increased stress, anxiety, and depression.

Finally, reducing screen time can provide children with more opportunities for face-to-face interactions, which are essential for building strong relationships and developing emotional intelligence. Face-to-face interactions can help children develop empathy, communication skills, and conflict resolution strategies, all of which are critical for maintaining good mental health.

In conclusion, limiting screen time to three hours a day can have a significant positive impact on children’s mental health. By reducing screen time, children can engage in more physical activities, explore other interests and hobbies, develop better sleep habits, reduce their exposure to digital toxicity, and build stronger relationships through face-to-face interactions. Parents and caregivers can play an essential role in promoting healthy screen use habits and supporting children’s mental health by setting limits, encouraging alternative activities, and modeling healthy behavior themselves.

Railways announces hike in train fares

Pakistan Railways has announced a fare increase for all trains, effective from July 19, 2024. The fare increase will be 1% for all mail, express, intercity, and passenger trains, including outsourced services. Additionally, the fare for all freight and goods trains will see a 2% increase. This adjustment is being implemented under the rationale of fare rationalization, aimed at ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of the railway services.

This move comes after Pakistan Railways had previously slashed train fares by 25% on June 11, 2024, to facilitate passengers during the Eidul Adha 2024 festivities. Despite this reduction, the railway authorities have now deemed it necessary to increase fares to maintain the operational costs and upgrade services.

Furthermore, Pakistan Railways has been taking stringent measures to curb the issue of ticket-less passengers. In a recent crackdown, the authorities collected an amount of over Rs76 million from ticket-less passengers during the last six months. This effort aims to ensure that all passengers contribute to the revenue stream, enabling the railways to improve services and infrastructure.

The fare increase may cause some inconvenience to passengers, but it is essential to ensure the long-term viability of Pakistan Railways. The authorities must strike a balance between providing affordable transportation and maintaining the quality of services. As the railway network is a vital transportation artery for the country, it is crucial to invest in its upgrade and expansion to meet the growing demands of passengers and freight services.

32 people have died as rioting against job quotas continue in Bangladesh.

In a dramatic escalation of protests in Bangladesh, students set fire to the country’s state broadcaster on Thursday, a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appeared on the network attempting to quell the violence that has resulted in at least 32 deaths. The protests, primarily fueled by demands for reform in civil service hiring practices, have engulfed Dhaka and other cities in chaos.

Hundreds of demonstrators clashed with riot police, who retaliated with rubber bullets and tear gas, but were eventually overpowered. The enraged crowd then targeted the Bangladesh Television (BTV) headquarters, setting its reception building and several vehicles on fire. According to a BTV official, numerous individuals were trapped inside the burning building, though another station official later confirmed their safe evacuation.

In response to the unrest, the government has ordered the indefinite closure of schools and universities, and police efforts to restore order have intensified. Prime Minister Hasina had appeared on BTV the previous night, condemning the “murder” of protesters and vowing to hold the perpetrators accountable, irrespective of their political affiliations. However, her call for calm did little to pacify the situation, as clashes resumed and intensified.

Thursday’s violence alone resulted in the deaths of at least 25 people, in addition to the seven killed earlier in the week. Hospital sources reported that police weaponry caused approximately two-thirds of these fatalities. One official at Uttara Crescent Hospital in Dhaka, who requested anonymity, detailed that among the dead were two students with rubber bullet injuries and five individuals with gunshot wounds. Nearly 1,000 others were treated for various injuries, many of which were also caused by rubber bullets.

The protests have not only seen student casualties but have also claimed the life of a journalist. Mehedi Hasan, a reporter for Dhaka Times, was killed while covering the clashes in Dhaka, according to Didar Malekin of the online news outlet.

Violence has spread across multiple cities, with riot police confronting protesters who set up human blockades on roads and highways. Notably, helicopters were used to rescue 60 police officers trapped on the roof of a building at Canadian University, which saw some of the fiercest clashes in Dhaka.

The protests, initially sparked by opposition to a quota system in civil service hiring that reserves over half the posts for certain groups, have evolved into a broader expression of dissatisfaction with Hasina’s government. Critics argue that the quota system disproportionately benefits children of pro-government factions, particularly veterans of the 1971 liberation war, and excludes qualified candidates. Hasina’s administration, accused of autocratic tendencies and human rights abuses, has faced mounting pressure as calls for her resignation grow louder.

Mubashar Hasan, a Bangladesh expert at the University of Oslo, noted that the protests have expanded beyond the quota issue to challenge Hasina’s leadership. “They are protesting against the repressive nature of the state,” he told AFP, adding that students are labeling her as a dictator.

Amid the turmoil, mobile internet services were disrupted nationwide on Thursday, following a blockade of Facebook two days prior. Junior telecommunications minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak confirmed the government’s order to cut off mobile internet, citing the spread of “rumours, lies and disinformation” through social media as the reason for the restrictions.

Clashes have also involved students allied with Hasina’s ruling Awami League, who have engaged protesters with bricks and bamboo rods. Amnesty International has condemned the use of unlawful force by Bangladeshi security forces, as video evidence from recent clashes corroborates these claims.

Prime Minister Hasina’s national address did not specify who was responsible for the deaths, but descriptions from hospital officials and protesters indicate that police actions, involving supposedly non-lethal weapons, have contributed significantly to the casualties. As the situation remains volatile, the government’s response and the protesters’ resilience continue to shape the course of this intense conflict.

Pakistan’s population is anticipated to double by 2050.

Pakistan’s population is growing at an alarming rate, with projections indicating that it will double by 2050 if the current growth rate continues. This is a staggering statistic, considering that the current population of Pakistan is already over 245 million. The country’s population growth rate is the highest in the region and among the highest globally, which is a cause for concern.

If the current trend continues, Pakistan’s population is expected to surpass that of Indonesia in 2048, reaching a staggering 331.29 million. This rapid growth is expected to continue until Pakistan’s population reaches its peak in 2092, with a projected population of 404.68 million. This is a daunting prospect, as it will put immense pressure on the country’s resources, infrastructure, and environment.

The implications of this rapid population growth are far-reaching and have significant consequences for Pakistan’s economic development, social stability, and environmental sustainability. It is essential for the government and policymakers to take immediate action to address this issue, by implementing effective population control measures, improving access to education and family planning resources, and investing in sustainable development initiatives. Failure to do so will result in severe consequences for the country and its people.

As mercury increases in Karachi, 20 bodies are retrieved from various regions.

As the mercury continues to soar in Karachi, the city is grappling with a disturbing trend of bodies being recovered from different areas. In the past 24 hours alone, at least 20 bodies were received at various hospitals, with most being identified as drug addicts. This brings the death toll from heat stroke since June to a staggering 51. The heatwave has also led to a surge in heatstroke cases, with nearly 50 reported in the last 24 hours.

The city is experiencing extremely hot weather, with temperatures reaching a scorching 40.5°C and a feels-like temperature of 56°C. The heat is unbearable, and the humidity level in the city remains high at 68%. While there is a forecast for rain and thunderstorms in certain areas, which may provide some relief, the citizens of Karachi are struggling to cope with the extreme weather conditions.

This is not the first time Karachi has faced such a crisis, as in June, over 40 bodies were discovered in various areas of the city over a span of three days, as the city endured extreme heat. The authorities are working hard to provide relief to the affected areas, but the situation remains dire.

The heatwave has also raised concerns about the vulnerability of certain populations, such as drug addicts, who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. The government and health authorities are working together to provide medical aid and support to those affected, but more needs to be done to address the root causes of this crisis.

As the city struggles to cope with the heatwave, the citizens of Karachi are coming together to support each other. Community centers and mosques are being used as cooling centers, and volunteers are distributing water and other essential items to those in need. While the situation is challenging, the resilience and solidarity of the people of Karachi are a beacon of hope in these difficult times.

Biden uses his COVID-19 diagnosis as a weapon to criticise Trump: Elon Musk

President Joe Biden used his positive COVID-19 test in a political statement by posting “I’m sick” on X (formerly known as Twitter). This move was aimed at former President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk. The 81-year-old president’s post was accompanied by a link to a donation page for Biden’s 2024 campaign, targeting Musk and his wealthy supporters who are willing to “buy” the elections. Musk, who has shown support for Trump, endorsed him on X and hoped for his rapid recovery following an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. The billionaire has also expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s immigration policies and has favored Trump’s re-election bid by donating to a political group responsible for electing the Republican Representative, as reported by Bloomberg.

The president posted this statement right after being tested positive on Wednesday, a day after he attended the NAACP National Convention in Las Vegas, where he criticized Trump’s policies. “He (Biden) will be returning to Delaware, where he will self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time,” the White House said in its official release on Wednesday (local time). However, Biden is vaccinated and has also had COVID-19 vaccine booster shots, the most recent being in September 2023, the WH said.

Biden’s use of his illness for a political message is seen as an attempt to rally his base and draw attention to the support Trump is receiving from wealthy individuals like Musk. This move underscores the ongoing political tensions and the high stakes of the upcoming 2024 election. Biden’s strategy highlights his campaign’s focus on countering the influence of wealthy donors and emphasizing the importance of grassroots support.

The political landscape remains highly charged as both candidates prepare for the 2024 election, with Biden leveraging his personal health challenges to galvanize his supporters and draw sharp contrasts with Trump and his backers. This incident adds to the broader narrative of the election, where issues of health, wealth, and political influence are likely to play significant roles in shaping voter opinions and outcomes.
