While the ruling parties criticize “foreign intervention,” PTI calls the US resolution a “right move.”

image 181

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday welcomed the passage of a resolution in the US House of Representatives, seeking an impartial probe into the claims of irregularities during the February 8 general elections in the country, something that the Imran Khan-founded party has been campaigning ever since the nationwide polls.

Expressing their support for democracy and human rights in Pakistan, the US lawmakers, many of whom have been speaking in PTI’s favour, have emphasised the need for the Pakistani public’s participation in the country’s democratic process.

The former ruling party is among those opposing the results of the polls after its candidates faced immense hurdles in their run-up to their participation in the vote, leading them to participate as independent candidates and being deprived of their iconic bat symbol following a legal battle with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The country’s two major parties — Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) — along with other political parties, formed a coalition government in the Centre.

Terming the development a move in the “right direction”, former president Arif Alvi lauded the massive majority in the resolution’s approval.

“What a resounding condemnation by (368-7) of the unhinging of the democratic process in Pakistan by the US Congress. A positive push in the right direction, along the lines of our own constitution, for democracy, rule of law, civilian control over our armed forces (not vice versa), personal freedoms, etc,” he wrote on social site, X (formerly Twitter).

The PTI leader drew similarities between the Resolution 901 and the Constitution of Pakistan about upholding democracy and citizens’ right to have a free and fair election.

The ex-president also mentioned the key proposals and demands in the US resolution in his post.

Meanwhile, former aide to Khan during his tenure as the prime minister, Zulfi Bukhari also appreciated the passage of the resolution saying that the move was about to bring a “change”.

“Things are about to change. The International silence is about to break,” he wrote on X.

Balochistan has reported the fifth case of poliovirus.

image 180

An 18-month-old child has been diagnosed with poliovirus in Balochistan’s Qilla Abdullah district, the provincial health department said on Tuesday.

This is the sixth poliovirus case from Pakistan and the fifth from Balochistan alone in 2024. One case was reported from Sindh this year.

Meanwhile, it was the second such case reported from the Qilla Abdullah district.

Earlier, cases of the virus from the province were also reported from Dera Bugti, Chaman, and Quetta.

According to the technical summary of the case, the child had a high grade fever on June 1, 2024, and developed weakness in the right leg on June 3, 2024, as per the parents.

It added that the onset was sudden and progressed quickly.

The report mentioned that the child was taken to local healthcare providers and notified at Al-Khair private hospital in Quetta on June 8, 2024, after which the case was investigated and classified as urgent based on clinical findings on June 9.

“The child has not received any OPV doses in SIAs or RI, except for the birth dose of OPV and BCG (with scar present). There is no history of any intramuscular injection in the last 24 hours prior to the onset of paralysis,” the report stated, adding that there was no travel history of the child prior to the onset of paralysis.

A day earlier, the National Task Force on Polio Eradication had expressed the resolve to employ all resources to eliminate polio from Pakistan, which was headed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad.

Chair of Gates Foundation Bill Gates together with President Global Development Dr Chris Elias, President Gender Equality and Michael Galway Dr Anita Zaidi, Deputy Director of Polio Eradication of the Gates Foundation along with partner organizations of Rotary, UNICEF, World Health Oorganisation and Centre for Disease Control attended the meeting.

During the meeting, the premier resolved that as long as the virus continues to circulate and paralyze children, our efforts would continue with full force.

He directed all stakeholders to ensure that every child in Pakistan receives multiple doses of the vaccine and is protected against polio, emphasising that provinces should lead polio eradication efforts in their regions with a sense of urgency to interrupt wild poliovirus transmission this year.

Gates, in his remarks, said his foundation will continue to extend support to Pakistan for polio eradication. He emphasised on the importance of obtaining maximum vaccination coverage during polio vaccination campaigns.

The meeting was also briefed about the challenges in implementing successive polio drives in several areas, particularly in security-compromised areas and some parts of Balochistan.

Co-creator of cricket’s Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method dies

image 178

Frank Duckworth, the statistician who co-developed cricket’s Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, breathed his last at the age of 84 last week, the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) announced on Tuesday.

“Fellows will be sad to learn that [Frank] Duckworth passed away on 21 June 2024,” read the statement issued by the RSS.

Duckworth was a consultant statistician with the ICC till 2014 and worked with mathematician and lecturer Tony Lewis, who died in 2020 at the age of 78, and devised the DLS method which is used to revise targets in limited overs games truncated due to rain in cricket.

Before the DL method, the rain rule was used to calculate targets in interrupted matches, including the infamous 1992 ODI World Cup semi-final between England and South Africa in Sydney.

The method was later renamed in 2014 with the addition of the name of Australian statistician Steven Stern after he made some modifications

For his services to the game, Duckworth was also awarded the honour of a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2010.

Reacting to his demise, International Cricket Council’s (ICC) General Manager of Cricket Operations Wasim Khan expressed condolences to his family and said: “Duckworth was a top statistician who was respected by peers as well as the wider cricket fraternity.”

“The DLS method that he co-created has stood the test of time and we have continued to use it in international cricket more than two decades after its inception […] his contribution to the game has been immense and the world of cricket is poorer with his death,” the ICC official added.

Who is at the top of the ICC T20 rankings after Babar and Rizwan were downgraded?

image 177

Pakistan’s Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have dropped one spot each to slip to fourth and fifth position, respectively, in the latest ICC Men’s T20I Batter’s rankings after a dismal performance in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Meanwhile, Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav, who had reigned as the number one batsman since December 2023, lost the top spot in the rankings to Australian opener Travis Head.

Head, 30, climbed four places in the rankings after performing well in the T20 World Cup 2024.

He has scored 255 runs in seven innings at an average of 42.50 and a strike rate of 158.38, making him the second-highest run scorer in the tournament with two half-centuries, according to India Today.

Furthermore, England’s Phil Salt also downgraded by one rank slipping to the third position.

The latest rankings show that West Indies’ Johnson Charles has moved up four places to be placed at the 10th position while Afghanistan’s Rehmanullah Garbaz trails behind him in the 11th position, after moving five ranks.

Additionally, England’s Jonny Bairstow climbed 14 places to the 13th position and South Africa’s Quinton de Kock has moved up 10 places to the 15th position in the rankings.

Jannat Mirza has surpassed Hania Amir in terms of social media following.

image 176

Pakistani social media sensation Jannat Mirza has become the most followed celebrity online after her TikTok followers swelled to 25 million, surpassing famous actress Hania Aamir.

Mirza’s popularity can’t be doubted as she holds the title of leading social media celebrity, who rose to prominence from the video-sharing site TikTok.

However, the milestone of 25 million followers is an impressive feat as no other Pakistani celebrity has ever garnered such a number on any social platform.

The 26-year-old, who also appeared in a Lollywood movie, shared the achievement with her fans on Instagram by posting a screenshot of her TikTok profile in the IG stories.

“We just hit 25 million followers! Woah […] it’s a big milestone for me,” she wrote on inside the story.

Expressing her excitement, Mirza also thanked her followers who contributed to swelling her following on the video-sharing platform.

Besides her popularity on TikTok, Mirza boasts over 5 million followers on Instagram as well.

One of the most popular celebrities on TikTok is Pakistani actor Aamir, who has 2.4 million followers on the short-form video hosting service.

She recently surpassed famous fellow actor Ayeza Khan to become the most followed Pakistani celebrity on Instagram with 1.42 million followers.

Mirza’s skyrocketing popularity shows the influence of social media personalities nowadays as they often leave behind the traditional stars in fame and reach.

Launched in 2016, TikTok became a widely popular social media app amassing over a billion active users all over the world. However, the site faced multiple bans in Pakistan, with authorities citing concerns over the promotion of immoral content.

In the latest court proceeding, the Peshawar High Court on June 26, 2024, directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to ensure the removal of any blasphemous and objectionable material from the social media short-video sharing platform TikTok.

Skepticism surrounds Gulbadin Naib’s removal from the game against Bangladesh due to a hamstring issue

image 175

After Afghanistan’s low-margin but historic win against Bangladesh that landed the side into T20 World Cup semi-final, Afghan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib’s wicket after a hamstring injury during the match raised eyebrows in the cricketing fraternity.

Rashid Khan-led side faced criticism over delaying tactics as the crucial game was paused for a while when Naib fell on the ground appealing a hamstring pain during the second innings, but some accused him of faking the injury.

The controversial mid-game act by the Afghan underwent scrutiny because it came right after their head coach Jonathan Trott made a gesture to slow down the game.

The criticism was mainly from cricketers from Australia, who were dropped out of the semis race, following Afghanistan’s victory against the Tigers in the Super 8 encounter.

Naib appeared to have pulled his hamstring but Aussie spinner Adam Zampa stated that it was the “old rainstring”.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan also took a cheeky dig at Gulbadin and congratulating him on becoming the first bowler to take a wicket after being shot.

“Great to see Gulbadin become the first cricketer in the history of the game to get a wicket 25 mins after being shot…,” Vaughan posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Gulbadin Naibs wicket against Bangladesh after hamstring injury sparks controversy

Meanwhile, India’s Ashwin jokingly called for a “red card” for Naib but the Afghan all-rounder came up with a quirky reply for that as well.

“It  happens sometimes when you are happy or when you are sad. Hamstring,” Naib wrote on X, dotted with laughing emojis.

Earlier, Afghanistan skipper Rashid was also asked by Simon Doull about Gulbadin’s apparent cramp which he played down saying hopefully he will be alright for the semi-final.

“Gulbadin had some cramp, I think. Hopefully, he will be alright. But that wicket that he gave us was a massive one at that stage,” Rashid said after the match.

During Bangladesh’s innings in the twelfth over, Afghanistan had a narrow two-run lead under the DLS system when rain started to pour.

Taking advantage of the rain, Trott gestured towards his player and asked him to get down on the field so the umpires would stop the play.

The play stopped and no bowl was bowled then. If the play had remained stopped, Afghanistan would’ve cruised to the semi-final as they were ahead on the DLS system.

However, the rain passed quickly and the play resumed and Afghanistan managed to win the match, bowling out the entire Bangladesh team for 105 runs.

After the match resumption, Gulbadin even took a wicket and was seen running in the field to celebrate.

The match wasn’t decided by Gulbadin’s actions but that sure made the headlines because the Aussies weren’t happy with it.

The T20 World Cup 2024 is now reaching its climax as from 20 teams at the start, it has come down to the last four who will be competing in the semi-finals on June 27 in the West Indies.

Joe Alwyn, the ex-partner of Taylor Swift, is mocked by Travis Kelce

image 174

During the recent episode of the Bussin’ With the Boys podcast, Travis discussed his relationship with Taylor and the media attention.

“You want to keep things private, but at the same time, like, I’m not here to hide anything,” he said. “That’s my girl, you know what I mean? That’s my lady, so it’s like… I’m proud of that.”

These comments of keeping ‘things private’ hints at Swift’s relationship with Alwyn, whom she dated for six years before their split in early 2023.

Throughout their relationship, the duo kept a low profile, rarely appearing together in public and avoiding discussions about their romance in interviews.

In contrast, the NFL star and the Lover hitmaker have embraced the limelight, often making public appearances and sharing glimpses of their relationship online.

Travis said, “I’m not sitting here trying to juggle like, “how can I keep this under wraps?” You just don’t want to let everyone into your personal life and be able to comment on it, knowing that everything she does is getting a headline.”

In the same conversation Travis also gushed over Swift, saying, “she’s very self-aware… She understands situations like that, and I think that’s why I really started to fall for her, how genuine she is just around friends and family.”

Celine Dion remembers her early years spent in poverty with regret.

image 173

Celine Dion has opened up about the various struggles of her life in her new documentary, including poverty during her childhood.

Celine recalled how her mother made carrot pies when they had nothing else to eat. The family of 14 often would often face such circumstances and their mother came up with ways to keep her kids from realizing they had nothing to eat.

The My Heart Will Go On hitmaker detailed: “My parents left their dreams aside for us, my dad worked, my mum made it happen. But sometimes there was nothing left in the fridge. She never told us ‘we have nothing to eat tonight’, she started to make dough, and there was carrots.”

She continued: “She said she prayed. She prayed that she was not going to hear ‘mum what is that.’ The first bite that someone took they said ‘mmm mum, what is that, it’s so good.’ It was carrot pies…. “

Elsewhere in the documentary, she confessed that her Stiff Persons Syndrome made her take dangerous amounts of valium so she could perform for her fans.

She added: “I was taking 80mg to 90mg of valium a day. That’s just one medicine. I don’t want to sound dramatic but I could have died. I was taking those medicines because I needed to walk. I need to be able to swallow. I needed medicine to function. One more pill, two more pills, five more pills. Too many pills. The show must go on.”

Why Prince William and Prince Harry were not permitted to meet Michael Jackson by King Charles

image 172

King of Pop Michael Jackson was all set to meet Prince William and Prince Harry in 2002, but King Charles had to step in to stop the meeting, per Michael’s former bodyguard.

Matt Fiddes says Michael had developed a close relationship with Princess Diana before her death and described her as the “perfect wife.”

He told podcaster James English: “He used to talk about Diana a lot – he said that she was his ideal wife. They spent hours on the phone… she used to ring all the time and he used to ring her all the time.”

When the princes were set to meet the Billy Jean singer, their father stopped it as the pop star was getting bad press in those days.

“Prince Harry and Prince William wanted to meet Michael,” Fiddes recounted. “Obviously they knew their mum was friends with Michael Jackson she used to go to the Wembley concerts during the ‘Bad’ era and so on.”

“We set it up, for Michael to meet them, but King Charles… we were told he had put a stop to it,” he shared.

He went on to reveal: “We had a very official letter come through saying ‘Prince William and Prince Harry will not be meeting Michael Jackson’. That was hard, because we had to deliver the news to him and that’s kind of why he came to London.”

Fiddes also alleged that Michael had travelled to London in order to see the princes and was promised an honorary knighthood by “certain people in the government, and near the Royal Family,” and he thought the meeting with the princes would secure the knighthood.

Bridgerton’s author promises a lovely adventure following the third season’s shift.

image 171

Julia Quinn, the author of the novel series around which Netflix’s super hit drama Bridgerton revolves, addressed season 3 gender swap.

After the introduction of Francescas Bridgerton’s new love interest, played by Hannah Dodd, as Michaela Stirling, played Masali Baduza, towards the end of season 3, the show received mixed reviews from fans.

Many expressed their disappointment with the gender-swap decision because the novel originally showcased Lord Kilmartin’s cousin,Michael Stirling, a male.

Addressing fans concerns, the novel’s author Julia Quinn took to Instagram and penned, “I am deeply committed to the Bridgerton world becoming more diverse and inclusive as the stories move from book to screen.”

Nonetheless, she admitted, “But switching the gender of a major character is a huge change, and so when Jess Brownell first approached me with the idea of turning Michael into Michaela for the show, I needed more information before conferring my agreement.”

“I’m confident now that when Francesca has her Bridgerton season, it will be the most emotional and heart-wrenching story of the show,” she promised.

Julia also stated, “Honestly, it may pack even more of a punch, since John is getting a lot more time on the screen than he ever did on the page, and I think it’s fair to say we’ve all fallen a little bit in love with him.”

“I ask that you grant me and the Shondaland team some faith as we move forward. I think we are going to end up with two stories, one on page and one on screen, and they will both be beautiful and moving,” she expressed as she concluded the post.

Shehzad Roy applauds the government for eliminating book taxes.

image 170

Pakistani musician and social activist Shehzad Roy thanked Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb for removing sales taxes from books in the federal Budget 2024-25, Geo News reported.

“Speaking up makes a difference. Earlier, it (speaking up) was feared, however, now it is fearful if (we) don’t speak,” the social activist said regarding his efforts in the field of education and request to the government authorities.

He also added: “We all should speak up and raise our voices.”

A day earlier, Roy said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif assured him that the decision of imposing a 10% sales tax on books in the federal budget 2024-25 will be reviewed.

In addition to removal of taxes on books, he demanded the government to maintain the restoration of tax rebate for teachers.

On Monday, he took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and informed that he also made an appeal to the premier and Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal to restore the 25% tax rebate for teachers.

“They both reassured me that they will reconsider this decision with a favo[u]rable outcome,” Roy wrote.

The finance minister informed the National Assembly earlier today that stationery items would remain exempted from taxes.

For the year starting from July 1, the federal government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has set a challenging tax revenue target of Rs13 trillion (approximately $46.66 billion).

This is a nearly 40% jump from the current year as this budget aims to strengthen the case for a new bailout deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Losses for state-owned businesses increased 23% to Rs905 billion in FY23.

image 169

Pakistan’s state-owned enterprises (SOEs) incurred aggregate losses of Rs905 billion for the fiscal year 2022-23, marking a 23% increase from the previous fiscal year of 2021-22.

It was revealed in a report titled “Aggregate Annual Report on Federal State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) for Financial Year 2023,” released by the Central Monitoring Unit (CMU) of the Finance Division on Tuesday.

These losses resulted in aggregate net losses of Rs202 billion, reflecting a 25% increase year-on-year. Liabilities also rose to Rs29,721 billion, a 20% increase indicating higher financial leverage.

Consequently, net equity declined to Rs5.49 trillion, down by 2.55%. The federal government remains concerned about overall portfolio volatility, with Value at Risk at higher levels.

In the power sector, particularly within distribution companies (DISCOs), losses remained prominent. Aggregate losses on the power side totalled Rs304 billion, despite Rs759 billion being allocated to support the sector.

Additionally, entities in the infrastructure sector, such as the National Highway Authority (NHA), incurred high financial costs, exacerbating the overall loss-making scenario.

The railways sector also contributed to the escalating losses, with aggregate losses over the past decade reaching Rs5,595 billion.

The government of Pakistan provided aggregate support amounting to Rs1,021 billion through Equity Injections (Rs267 billion), Grants (Rs223 billion), Subsidies (Rs403 billion), and Loans (Rs128 billion) to sustain these SOEs and bolster the economy.

However, this support accounted for more than 10% of the federal budget’s receipts, underscoring significant fiscal strain.

Various risks were identified within the SOE sector, notably substantial working capital lock-up due to aged receivables and payables across the chain, contributing to a circular debt exceeding Rs4 trillion.

Operational inefficiencies in the power sector continued to negatively impact SOEs profitability, cascading throughout the chain.

Guarantees provided amounted to Rs1,656 billion, while the debt stock reached Rs3,545 billion, with accrued interest on NHA loans alone exceeding Rs1,100 billion.

These high debt and guarantee levels pose significant risks for the sector, exposing it to both systemic and unsystemic risks.

Systemic risks include economic downturns, inflation, and interest rate fluctuations, exacerbating financial strain on SOEs and making debt servicing more challenging.

The SOEs contributed Rs466 billion to the national exchequer in taxes, a 24% increase, while non-tax revenues, including sales taxes, royalties, and levies, totalled Rs952 billion, up by 58%. Dividends contributed Rs63 billion, marking a 43% increase.

Moving forward, the report said, enhancing corporate governance was critical, necessitating more independent and technically qualified directors to ensure effective governance and robust monitoring criteria, maintaining a streamlined approach.

‘Mysterious deaths’ in Karachi now stand at 22.

image 168

The mystery surrounding unidentified deaths in Karachi remained unresolved as the number of bodies found from different areas of the metropolis soared to 22 after five new recoveries on Tuesday.

A spokesperson of the Chhipa Welfare Association said in a statement that volunteers found five more bodies in different areas of Karachi on Tuesday. “Three of them were seemingly drug addicts, however, not a single body was identified so far,” the spokesperson added.

The non-government organisation, which runs a network of ambulances in the metropolis, confirmed that the number of unidentified bodies has reached 22 after today’s recoveries.

It added that nearly two dozen of those bodies were still unclaimed as no relatives of the deceased persons came to receive them.

The deaths were attributed to an ongoing heatwave in the port city which affected a vast number of citizens as many of them were admitted to different hospitals due to heatstroke.

An official of another humanitarian organisation in Karachi, Edhi Foundation’s Azeem Khan told The News yesterday that most of the deceased were drug addicts who died due to severe heat while being under the influence of drugs after over a dozen unidentified persons were found dead in different areas of Karachi.

An Apple supplier does not let married Indian women to work in assembly.

image 166

A key manufacturer of Apple devices, Foxconn, has been found excluding married women from assembly jobs at its flagship smartphone plant in India, according to a reported published in Reuters.

This occurrence is in contrast to the codes of conduct of both the company and the corporation, as it is explicitly discriminating on the basis of marital status.

Reuters investigation report, which was published on Tuesday, revealed that Foxconn discriminates against married women by rejecting their job applications, because of their “greater family responsibilities compared to unmarried counterparts” as the reason.

It was also revealed in the report that the smartphone manufacturer systematically excluded married women from job opportunities at its main iPhone assembly plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Moreover, the company justified this by claiming that married women have “more issues post-marriage.”

As per the report, this was confirmed by numerous former and current employees from over a dozen Foxconn hiring agencies across India, many of whom spoke to the news agency on the condition of anonymity.

Reasons including family duties, pregnancy, and higher absenteeism were cited by the agents and Foxconn HR for not hiring married women at the plant. Additionally, many noted that the jewellery worn by married Hindu women could interfere with production.

However, the ban is not absolute. Three former Foxconn HR executives told Reuters that the Taiwan-headquartered manufacturer is relaxing its policy of not hiring married women during high-production periods when it faces labour shortages.

The media organisation also found that in some cases, hiring agencies assist female candidates in concealing their marital status to secure jobs.

In Sindh, children make up up to 15% of the 260 persons diagnosed with HIV each month.

image 165

At least 260 people are diagnosed with HIV each month in Sindh while 10% to 15% of these cases are children, officials said, highlighting an alarming situation in the province.

The cases are reported especially in Larkana and its surrounding districts, Hyderabad, Mirpur Khas, and Karachi as well.

“So far, 1,304 new HIV cases have been detected in the first five months of 2024. On average, 260 new HIV cases are being identified in the province monthly,” an official of the Sindh health department told this correspondent.

The children diagnosed with the deadly disease are under the age of 12.

Officials said the reuse of syringes and IV drips by unqualified practitioners, quacks, poor infection prevention and control, tainted blood, and mother-to-child transmission are major factors behind HIV transmission among children in Sindh, The News reported.

As per the report, the latest HIV outbreak has been reported from the Mirpur Khas district, where 20 children were found infected with the virus over the past six months during screenings at a nutrition stabilisation center at Civil Hospital Mirpur Khas.

According to data from the Sindh health department and the Common Management Unit (CMU) for AIDS, TB, and Malaria in Islamabad, the highest number of new HIV cases in Sindh were detected in May 2024, with 293 people diagnosed with the virus.

“In January and February 2024, 257 people, including children, were diagnosed with HIV each month. In March, 258 new HIV cases were detected, followed by 239 cases in April, and 293 cases in May,” the health department official detailed.

Regarding the recent HIV cases among children in Mirpur Khas, the official emphasised that this was ‘just a fraction’ of the new cases being reported in Sindh.

Of the 260 new HIV cases emerging each month, 50-60 are children, he claimed.

Commenting on the HIV situation in Mirpur Khas district, Deputy Director General of Communicable Disease Control (CDC) of the Sindh Health Department, Dr Zulfiqar Dharejo confirmed that 20 children had been found infected in the entire district from January to June 2024.

Two of these children had died, while the remaining 18 were receiving ART treatment, he added.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk became the centre of another social media scam as a YouTube Live broadcast used his deepfake to deceive viewers, Engadget reported.

The five-hour-long fraudulent cryptocurrency broadcast featured an AI-generated version of Musk’s voice, encouraging viewers to deposit their Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Dogecoin on a specific website for a promised giveaway.

The scheme claimed that it would “automatically send back double the amount of the cryptocurrency you deposited.”

The deceptive broadcast attracted over 30,000 viewers, pushing it to the top of YouTube’s Live Now recommendations. However, suspicions arose that the viewer count may have been artificially boosted by bots.

The account behind the scam, @elon.teslastream, had an Official Artist Channel verification badge, suggesting a potential account hack, NewsBytes reported.

Both the video and the channel were promptly removed after Engadget alerted Google of the fraudulent activity.

The latest incident is part of a growing trend of Musk deepfake scams, using an account posing as one of Musk’s companies.

The cryptocurrency scam follows a recent scam which was titled “Tesla unveils a masterpiece: The Tesla that will change the car industry forever.”

Earlier this month, Cointelegraph reported similar scams involving 35 accounts that were pretending to be SpaceX during the Starship launch.

Additionally, in April, scammers capitalised on the Total Solar Eclipse hype using the same tactic. Fake Musk livestreams were also posted on Reddit recently.

Cryptocurrency scams have consistently targeted Musk’s followers and other celebrities have also fallen prey to such scams.

In the gruesome incident, the armed men opened indiscriminate firing after entering a house of their opponents in the vicinity of Badaber police station, leaving 9 people dead, including four women and four children while others got injured.

Police officials said in their initial statement that the incident was a result of monetary and property disputes between the two families.

However, Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Operations Kashif Zulfiqar contradicted the statement and said that there was seemingly no monetary dispute between both parties.

He added that a probe was launched to ascertain the motives behind the armed attack. “Two teams have been constituted to arrest the culprits,” the police officer said. The bodies have been shifted to hospital for post-mortem by rescue teams.

Those killed were identified as Naureen w/o Ashfaq, Sidra d/o Amanat Ali, Hamida Begum w/o Malak Aman, Alibaba d/o Muhammad Asfaq, Akash s/o Muhammad Ashfaq, Tufail Afnan s/o Muhammad Ishaq and Inkhat s/o Muhammad Ishaq.

One of the injured women was shifted to Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, for medical assistance.

Police collected empty shells of cartridges and other evidence from the crime scene and registered a case on the report of the heirs.

SSP Investigation Sahibzada Sajjad said that four teams headed by Superintendent Police (SP) Saddar Circle were dispatched to arrest the criminals. He added that motives behind the incident would be revealed after a thorough investigation.

Breaking the silence over her rumoured marriage, the TV host came up with a witty response to all those spreading false reports.

“For those worried about my marriage,” Ali wrote in the text added to the short video clip uploaded as a reel on her official Instagram page.

After greetings, the presenter said that she wanted to address “special” news while expressing dismay over misleading reports suggesting she had tied the knot.

“All of you people are extremely worried for my marriage. You are here just to marry me off, many of you may also have arranged dowry for me,” she said, advising those behind such reports to worry about the marriage of their “unmarried sisters” instead of her.

Ali said that she would reveal the name of her ‘husband-to-be’ whenever she wanted to get married.

“These ordinary YouTubers and even big TV channels are using my name for cheap popularity and spreading news about my ‘marriage’,” she said.

The actor wondered if anywhere in the world she travels for work or vacation, “do I have to get married there?”

Ali who rose to prominence from PTV classic, drama serial Mehndi, then bashed the rumour-mongers by asking that wouldn’t all these false reports trouble her or hurt her feelings.

“You guys are tagging me in pictures of my ‘wedding events’ day and night, is that right? Please, stop such antics,” Ali said while concluding her message.

It may be noted that Ali had tied the knot to Fawad Farooq in 2007 but the couple parted their ways later. The two also have a daughter.

T20 World Cup 2024: Afghanistan creates history by defeating Bangladesh to reach the semi-finals for the first time.

Afghanistan created history on Monday by reaching their first-ever semi-final in a World Cup, securing an eight-run victory over Bangladesh in a nail-biting match at the T20 World Cup 2024. This landmark achievement was sealed with a dramatic performance by the Afghan bowlers, particularly Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq, who each took four wickets to dismantle the Bangladeshi batting lineup.

The match, held at the Arnos Vale Stadium in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, saw Afghanistan set a modest target of 116 runs after winning the toss and opting to bat first. However, rain interruptions reduced Bangladesh’s chase target to 114 runs in 19 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. Despite the seemingly manageable target, Bangladesh found themselves bowled out for 105 runs in the 18th over, thanks to a stellar bowling display from Afghanistan.

Afghanistan’s captain, Rashid Khan, led from the front, delivering a spectacular performance with the ball, finishing with figures of 4-23. Naveen-ul-Haq was equally impressive, taking 4-26. Their combined efforts ensured that Bangladesh, despite a valiant effort from Litton Das, who remained unbeaten on 54 runs, could not reach the target. The victory not only sent Afghanistan to the semi-finals but also knocked out Australia from the tournament, joining India as the semi-finalists from Group 1.

Rashid Khan’s leadership and bowling prowess were instrumental in this historic win. His ability to deliver under pressure has been a defining feature of his captaincy. Naveen-ul-Haq’s pace and accuracy complemented Rashid’s spin, creating a formidable bowling attack that Bangladesh struggled to cope with. This victory marks a significant milestone for Afghan cricket, showcasing their growth and resilience on the international stage.

Earlier in the day, Afghanistan’s innings was anchored by Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who top-scored with 43 runs off 55 balls. His innings included three fours and a six, providing a steady foundation despite losing wickets at regular intervals. For Bangladesh, Rishad Hossain was the standout bowler, taking 3-26 in his four overs. His crucial wickets of Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, and Gulbadin Naib helped restrict Afghanistan to 115 runs.

The playing XIs for the match reflected the teams’ strategic choices. Afghanistan’s lineup included Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Gulbadin Naib, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Karim Janat, Rashid Khan (c), Nangeyalia Kharote, Noor Ahmad, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Fazalhaq Farooqi. Bangladesh fielded Litton Das (wk), Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Towhid Hridoy, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah, Soumya Sarkar, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, and Mustafizur Rahman.

The aftermath of this thrilling match sets up an exciting semi-final lineup. Afghanistan will face South Africa at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad on June 27, while India will go up against England at the Guyana National Stadium later the same day. These matches promise to deliver high-octane cricket as the teams vie for a place in the final.

Reflecting on the victory, Rashid Khan expressed the intense emotions experienced during the match. “It’s very stressful,” he said. “We kept battling until the end but unfortunately, football was merciless with us tonight.” His words highlighted the roller-coaster of emotions that come with high-stakes matches, underscoring the determination and grit of the Afghan team.

The historic win has not only elevated Afghanistan’s status in world cricket but also brought immense pride to their fans and supporters. It serves as a testament to the hard work and perseverance of the team, which has steadily risen through the ranks in international cricket.

As Afghanistan prepares to face South Africa, they carry the hopes and dreams of a nation eager to see their team continue this remarkable journey. Euro 2024: Italy secures Last 16 spot with thrilling draw versus Croatia.

Luka Modric made history in Euro 2024 by becoming the oldest goalscorer in the competition’s history with his 55th-minute strike during a tense Group B clash between Croatia and Italy on Monday. The 38-year-old’s goal initially seemed to secure Croatia’s advancement to the knockout stage, but a last-minute goal from Mattia Zaccagni ensured a dramatic 1-1 draw, propelling Italy into the last 16 while leaving Croatia’s fate uncertain.

The match was a roller-coaster of emotions and high drama. Modric’s record-breaking goal came just moments after he missed a penalty, saved by Italy’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Undeterred, Modric quickly redeemed himself by finding the back of the net, surpassing the previous record held by Austrian Ivica Vastic since 2008. His goal was a testament to his enduring skill and tenacity, marking another milestone in his illustrious career.

Italy, needing at least a draw to secure their place in the knockout stages, fought hard against a resilient Croatian side. The tension was palpable throughout the match, with both teams creating opportunities but struggling to convert them into goals. Italy’s coach, Luciano Spalletti, deployed a 3-5-2 formation, which saw the team play defensively, aiming to contain Croatia’s attacking threats. Despite their defensive stance, Italy did manage to pose occasional threats, such as when Mateo Retegui’s header deflected dangerously towards the goal.

Croatia, led by coach Zlatko Dalic, kept their experienced midfield trio of Modric, Marcelo Brozovic, and Mateo Kovacic on the pitch for most of the match. This decision seemed to pay off as Croatia dominated possession and created several scoring opportunities. Luka Sucic’s effort forced a fine save from Donnarumma, and Dominik Livakovic, Croatia’s goalkeeper, made an equally stunning save to deny Alessandro Bastoni at the other end.

As the match neared its conclusion, Croatia appeared to have done enough to secure their spot in the next round. However, in the 98th minute, Zaccagni delivered a stunning strike that shattered Croatian hopes and sent the Italian fans into raptures. Zaccagni’s goal pushed Italy to second place in Group B, behind Spain, and secured their progression to face Switzerland in the last 16.

In the aftermath of the match, Modric expressed the emotional toll of the game. “It’s very stressful,” he said. “We kept battling until the end but unfortunately, football was merciless with us tonight.” His disappointment was palpable, but his performance on the night earned him the player of the match award, a small consolation for his efforts.

Despite the setback, Dalic’s strategic changes throughout the match, including the introduction of powerful striker Ante Budimir, showed a proactive approach as Croatia looked more threatening in the second half. However, Italy’s defensive resilience and Zaccagni’s late heroics proved too much for Croatia to overcome.

Modric, reflecting on his future, remained uncertain about how long he would continue playing. “I’ll keep playing on, I don’t know for how much longer,” he said. His words underscored the uncertainty of a player who has given so much to the sport and continues to perform at the highest level even as he approaches the twilight of his career.

For Italy, the draw was a crucial result that highlighted their resilience and ability to perform under pressure. Spalletti’s tactical adjustments and the team’s defensive solidity were key factors in securing the result. As they prepare to face Switzerland in the knockout stages, Italy will look to build on this performance and continue their journey in Euro 2024.

For Croatia, the road ahead is less certain. Their fate now depends on the outcomes of other matches in the group, leaving them in a precarious position. The team will need to regroup and hope for favorable results elsewhere to secure their place in the next round.

The match between Croatia and Italy was a showcase of drama, skill, and the unpredictable nature of football. Modric’s historic goal and Zaccagni’s last-minute strike encapsulated the highs and lows of the beautiful game, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Euro 2024.

“Understanding the Vital Role of Sunscreen in Skin Protection”

Sunscreen is an essential component of skincare routines worldwide, playing a critical role in protecting the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation, emitted by the sun, consists of UVA and UVB rays, both of which can cause significant damage to the skin if not properly shielded against.

UVB rays primarily affect the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and are the main cause of sunburns. They can also contribute to the development of skin cancers, including melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. On the other hand, UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, affecting the dermis. They are responsible for premature skin aging, such as wrinkles, sagging, and age spots, and can also contribute to skin cancer formation.

Sunscreen works by acting as a protective barrier against UV radiation. It contains active ingredients that either absorb, scatter, or reflect UV rays before they can penetrate the skin and cause damage. The most common types of active ingredients in sunscreens include organic (chemical) compounds like avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octocrylene, which absorb UV radiation, and inorganic (physical) compounds like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which scatter and reflect UV radiation.

The effectiveness of sunscreen is typically measured by its sun protection factor (SPF), which indicates how well it protects against UVB rays. SPF is a numerical rating system, with higher numbers indicating greater protection. For example, SPF 30 sunscreen blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%. It’s important to note that no sunscreen can provide 100% protection, so other sun protection measures should also be used, such as seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours.

Regular use of sunscreen has numerous benefits for skin health. Firstly, it helps prevent sunburns, reducing the immediate discomfort and potential long-term damage associated with excessive UV exposure. Sunburns not only cause pain and redness but also increase the risk of skin cancer over time.

Secondly, sunscreen protects against premature skin aging caused by UVA rays. These rays contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging. By applying sunscreen daily, individuals can help maintain a more youthful appearance and delay the onset of visible signs of aging.

Thirdly, sunscreen plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of skin cancer. Skin cancer, particularly melanoma, is strongly linked to UV exposure. According to skin cancer experts, using sunscreen regularly, along with other sun protection measures, significantly reduces the likelihood of developing skin cancer later in life. This preventive measure is particularly important in regions with high levels of UV radiation or for individuals with fair skin, which is more susceptible to sun damage.

Moreover, sunscreen is beneficial for all skin types and tones, including darker skin tones that may have a lower risk of sunburn but are still susceptible to UV damage and skin cancer. It’s a misconception that individuals with darker skin do not need sunscreen. While darker skin naturally provides some protection against UV rays due to higher levels of melanin, sunscreen is still essential for comprehensive protection.

In addition to its protective benefits, modern sunscreens are formulated to be lightweight, non-greasy, and suitable for daily use. They come in various forms, including lotions, creams, gels, sprays, and sticks, catering to different preferences and skin types. Some sunscreens are also designed for specific activities, such as water-resistant formulas for swimming or sports.

Sunscreen is a vital component of a healthy skincare regimen, offering protection against sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. Regular and correct application of sunscreen, along with other sun protection measures, is essential for maintaining skin health and reducing the risk of UV-related skin damage. By incorporating sunscreen into daily routines, individuals can enjoy the outdoors safely while preserving the health and appearance of their skin for years to come.

Hajj deaths exceed 1,300, primarily among unregistered travellers.

The death toll of pilgrims who performed Hajj in extreme heat has now surpassed 1,300, according to reports from the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA). Many of the deceased did not possess official permits to perform Hajj. This tragic development underscores the severe conditions faced by pilgrims during this year’s pilgrimage.

The SPA revealed that “Regrettably, the number of mortalities reached 1,301, with 83% being unauthorized to perform Hajj and having walked long distances under direct sunlight, without adequate shelter or comfort.” This statement highlights the dire circumstances in which many pilgrims found themselves, particularly those who undertook the pilgrimage without official permission and thus likely without proper planning or support.

While some governments are still updating their total counts, reports indicate that the deceased pilgrims hailed from over ten countries, ranging from the United States to Indonesia. This international scope of the tragedy underscores the global nature of the Hajj pilgrimage and the widespread impact of this year’s extreme conditions.

Last week, Arab diplomats disclosed that Egyptians accounted for 658 of the deaths, with 630 of these individuals being unregistered pilgrims. The extreme heat, which saw temperatures in Makkah rise as high as 51.8°C according to Saudi Arabia’s national meteorological center, was cited as the primary cause of death in most cases. The harsh conditions made the pilgrimage particularly perilous for those who were not officially registered and, therefore, not part of the organized groups that might have had better access to resources and support.

Riyadh had not publicly commented on the deaths or provided its own toll until Sunday. However, on Friday, a senior Saudi official provided a partial toll, reporting 577 deaths for the two busiest days of Hajj: June 15, when pilgrims gathered for hours of prayers in the blazing sun on Mount Arafat, and June 16, when they participated in the stoning of the devil ritual in Mina. These figures, while staggering, only account for a portion of the overall fatalities and highlight the critical days when the heat and the physical demands of the pilgrimage were at their peak.

The official defended Riyadh’s response, stating, “The state did not fail, but there was a misjudgment on the part of people who did not appreciate the risks.” This comment suggests that the Saudi authorities believe the responsibility for the high death toll lies partly with the pilgrims who did not register officially and were perhaps unprepared for the arduous conditions.

In a statement on Sunday, Saudi Health Minister Fahd Al Jalajel described the management of this year’s Hajj as “successful,” according to SPA. He emphasized that the health system provided extensive services, saying, “The health system provided more than 465,000 specialized treatment services, including 141,000 services to those who didn’t obtain official authorization to perform Hajj.” This statement, which summarized an interview Al Jalajel gave to Saudi Arabia’s Al Ekhbariya channel, underscores the extensive efforts made by the Saudi health system to manage the health and safety of pilgrims, both authorized and unauthorized.

Saudi officials have reported that 1.8 million pilgrims participated in this year’s Hajj, a number similar to last year, with 1.6 million coming from abroad. This large influx of international pilgrims highlights the logistical challenges and the high stakes of managing such a massive event, especially under extreme weather conditions.

The tragic deaths of so many pilgrims serve as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with the Hajj, particularly in years marked by extreme heat. As Saudi authorities continue to manage the aftermath and plan for future pilgrimages, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants—regardless of their registration status—will be crucial. Enhanced measures to provide shelter, hydration, and medical support, especially for those who might undertake the pilgrimage unofficially, could help mitigate such tragedies in the future.

Astronauts stuck in orbit as NASA delays return of Boeing Starliner

The time is running out for astronauts stranded in space as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has once again delayed the return of the Boeing Starliner due to technical issues. The ongoing delays have raised concerns over the limited fuel available in the Harmony module, which could restrict the spacecraft’s docking duration.

The Boeing Starliner, carrying two astronauts, was initially scheduled to return from the International Space Station (ISS) on June 14. However, due to unforeseen technical problems, the return date was first postponed to June 26 and now faces further delays, according to Live Science. The continuous postponements have created uncertainty about the safe return of the astronauts.

NASA announced the decision to delay the return, stating, “Mission managers are evaluating future return opportunities following the station’s two planned spacewalks on June 24 and July 2.” This statement highlights the complexity and interdependencies of space missions, where multiple factors, including ongoing activities on the ISS, must be considered before finalizing a return schedule.

This mission marks Boeing’s first crewed venture with the Starliner capsule and includes United States astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. The mission faced significant anticipation and pressure, given the years of delays and developmental challenges Boeing has encountered with the Starliner program.

The Starliner capsule launched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on June 5. During the 25-hour journey to the ISS, engineers discovered five separate helium leaks in the spacecraft’s thruster system. These leaks pose a significant risk to the mission’s success and have been a primary cause of the return delays.

Mark Nappi, Boeing’s Starliner program manager, addressed the issue at a press conference, explaining, “We’ve learned that our helium system is not performing as designed. Albeit manageable, it’s still not working like we designed it. So we’ve got to go figure that out.” Nappi’s comments underscore the unexpected challenges that can arise even after extensive testing and preparation.

The return module of the Starliner spacecraft is currently docked to the ISS’s Harmony module. However, the limited fuel available in the Harmony module means that the Starliner can only remain docked for a maximum of 45 days. This constraint places additional pressure on NASA and Boeing to resolve the technical issues swiftly and safely.

The narrow window for a safe return flight is closing, making it imperative for the mission managers to find a viable solution. The limited docking duration is a crucial factor, as extending the stay beyond the 45-day limit could jeopardize the mission and the safety of the astronauts.

The technical issues with the helium leaks are not just minor inconveniences but represent significant challenges that could impact the thruster system’s performance during re-entry. Ensuring the integrity of this system is paramount for a safe return, and NASA and Boeing engineers are working diligently to address and rectify these problems.

In the broader context, the delays and technical challenges faced by the Boeing Starliner mission highlight the complexities and risks associated with human spaceflight. Each mission involves a multitude of variables and potential issues, and even with rigorous planning and testing, unforeseen problems can arise.

The ongoing situation also underscores the importance of having robust contingency plans and the ability to adapt to new information and challenges as they emerge. NASA’s careful evaluation of return opportunities and coordination with planned spacewalks demonstrate the meticulous approach required for successful space missions.

As the mission managers continue to evaluate and address the technical issues, the safe return of astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams remains the top priority. The delays, while frustrating, are necessary to ensure all systems function correctly and the astronauts’ safety is not compromised.

The delay in the return of the Boeing Starliner due to helium leaks and the limited fuel in the Harmony module presents a challenging situation for NASA and Boeing. The narrow window for a safe return flight emphasizes the urgency of resolving the technical issues. Despite the setbacks, the mission exemplifies the dedication and resilience required in space exploration, with the ultimate goal of bringing the astronauts home safely.

Protests for Imran Khan’s Release in the UK

By Sheraz Khan – London

Pakistan’s legendary cricketer and former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been imprisoned in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail for the past ten months. June 23rd, Sunday, Pakistanis are staged protests in four major cities for his release. The first protest was in London, at the British Prime Minister’s official residence, 10 Downing Street. The second protest was in Manchester, Piccadilly; the third in Edinburgh, Scotland; and the fourth in Dublin, Ireland. It is believed that the Pakistani government must have asked the British government to stop these protests, but peaceful protests are allowed in the UK, So it took place.

Since being ousted from office in April 2022, Imran Khan has faced a long list of alleged bogus convictions and cases. The majority of the Pakistani public believes these cases are politically motivated and aimed at character assassination. Evidence includes public letters from judges of Pakistan’s highest courts, revealing pressure from institutions to rule against Imran Khan and his party leaders. Additionally, Imran Khan’s party PTI was prevented from campaigning freely and holding rallies for the February 8th elections. Despite such obstacles, the PTI won a landslide victory, but results were allegedly tampered with, yet PTI still emerged as the majority party in the National Assembly.

The coalition government formed by the PTI main opposition is weak and lacks public support, while the PTI managed to form a government in one of province KPK and remains leading opposition in Punjab which is 62 percent of Pakistan. Political instability continues, leading to economic instability, with foreign and domestic investors hesitating to invest. Pakistan is drowning in debt, owing $90 billion in foreign loans to be repaid in the next five years, and the new IMF budget has increased taxes by 30%. total population which is 240 Millions nearly half people are already living below the poverty line, and more loans are being taken to repay previous ones. Political instability and unconstitutional decisions have not only distanced the prospect of democracy but also led to human rights violations, corruption, nepotism, money laundering, and inflation, causing public unrest.

Overseas Pakistanis, once eager to invest, are now disillusioned due to the uncertain situation of the past two years. The country faces internal and external threats, but civil and military leadership seem oblivious. A country cannot function without public support, adherence to the constitution, the rule of law, and the independence and strength of institutions.

As for the allegations against Imran Khan, the most serious is the accusation that, following his arrest on May 7-8 , 2023, his party workers staged widespread protests and attacked military properties on May 9. Although Imran Khan condemned these incidents upon release repeatedly but he did not visit the Lahore Corps Commander’s house or any instaltion. Imran Khan and PTI consider these attacks a conspiracy to politically harm them and repeatedly demand an independent judicial commission to investigate the conspiracy behind these tragic events. However, the ruling circles have yet to agree to form such a commission. Courts have acquitted Imran Khan of major pre-election convictions, except for detaining him on the charge of marrying during his wife’s Iddat period, which lacks a solid basis. New cases are now being fabricated against him basically to keep him inside jail. PTI has announced protests nationwide for his release, but the Punjab government, representing 62% of Pakistan, has imposed Section 144, banning gatherings of four or more people, even though the constitution allows for assemblies and processions.

The state, being like a mother, should embrace its patriotic divided populace and move forward for the country’s betterment. Women, elderly, and young political prisoners should be released unless they are actual criminals, who should be punished according to the law. When a country is being destroyed, everyone must strive for improvement.

A poem by Mughal ruler Bahadur Shah Zafar for Pakistan’s leadership:
“Zafar, do not consider a person wise or intelligent,
who, in comfort, forgets God,
and in anger, does not fear God.”
