PSL 2023: Kings score a much-needed first victory by defeating Qalandars by 67 runs

image 18

As part of the eighth game of the ongoing Pakistan Super League on Sunday at the National Bank Cricket Stadium in Karachi, Karachi Kings defeated Lahore Qalandars to earn its first victory.

The final over by captain Imad Wasim and the two dismissals by Akif Javed gave Kings the crucial advantage over Qalandars. Aamer Yamin and Mohammad Amir made two early forays for the Kings side, while Tahir Baig and Kamran Ghulam took the lead in the run-chase.

Young bowler Akif Javed, who was brought into the Kings’ lineup to fill in for an injured Mir Hamza, struck twice in his third over to send the two batters back to the dressing room.

Imad then made matters worse for the defending champions by deceiving Hussain Talat with a spinning delivery. Talat missed it, and Matthew Wade quickly toppled the stumps.

David Wiese, a threatening hitter who departed the field after getting only nine runs, was taken out by Aamer, who then scored another wicket.

As Ben Cutting grabbed two wickets in his first over of bowling at a vital moment, Lahore Qalandars continued to lose wickets. Shaheen Shah Afridi, the team’s captain, and Sikandar Raza were both dismissed by the all-rounder.

At the National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi on Saturday, Quetta Gladiators thrashed Karachi Kings by six runs in the sixth game of the eighth season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Quetta’s victory in the competition marked their first. Karachi, though, has already dropped three straight games.

Karachi, who had 20 overs to bat, were only able to reach 162-5 while attempting to reach a 169-run mark.

Despite scoring 71 runs in 49 balls and remaining unblemished, Kings all-rounder Shoaib Malik’s team was unable to cross the finish line. Eight fours and a six were in his innings.

Irfan Khan, meanwhile, managed to score 37 runs in 26 balls without being out thanks to one four and three maxes.

After losing three fast wickets, Karachi’s run chase got off to a terrible start. In contrast to James Vince, who briefly appeared to be in charge and was bowled for a duck, Sharjeel Khan and Haider Ali could only muster 22 runs in 14 balls.

After scoring 86 runs in 54 balls for the sixth wicket, Malik and Irfan appeared poised to chase down the mark, but Quetta’s bowlers, particularly Naseem Shah and Mohammad Hasnain, maintained their composure in the dying overs to secure their team’s victory.

If Afghanistan doesn’t take action against militant groups, FM Bilawal says, terrorism will spread beyond Pakistan

image 17 3

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, the PPP chairman said the “security and terrorist threat emanating out” of Afghanistan was the most crucial issue pertaining to the country in the region. He added that a whole “alphabet soup” of terrorist organisations were based out of Afghanistan.

He lamented that neither the international community nor the Afghan government had taken the situation seriously enough.

We are already observing an increase in terrorist activity in Pakistan after the fall of Kabul, but it won’t stop there if we and the interim government don’t take these groups seriously and they don’t exhibit the will and capacity to take on terrorist groups.

Future national team T20 openers are identified by Ramiz Raja

image 17 1

During the Pakistan Super League (PSL) match between Peshawar Zalmi and Multan Sultans, Ramiz Raja, the former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has named the two players he believes are best suited to open for the national T20 team.

Multan defeated Peshawar handily by 56 runs in the fifth PSL game on Friday at the Multan Cricket Ground.

Saim Ayub and Mohammad Haris played devastating innings, and in a video on his YouTube channel, Ramiz Talks, he said: “Look, these two have fantastic potential, and I think these two are the future opening pair of Pakistan T20I side.”

The veteran cricketer noted that the pair should have sustained their strong innings to finish the run-chase, though.

They sometimes forget that you don’t play such innings for the gallery but rather you have to sustain it and win the match for your side, he added, adding that getting out after putting in the hard effort and establishing the pace is an insult to their own abilities.

College students were addressed by Rakul Preet Singh, who urged them to avoid letting stress affect them.

In her speech, she stated, “We take on more stress than we should in life. I was a college student once, just like you, and I can now state that we put too much stress on ourselves because of exams and other things. Life has a lot more obstacles to overcome! You may believe that your difficulties are the biggest at any given period of life, but this is not the case. Problems weren’t as bad as you made them out to be, one learns much later. You may live a good life without worry, in my opinion!

KANDAHAR: Teenage females study religious scriptures as the disembodied voice of a male professor blares over a loudspeaker in a frigid classroom in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban organisation.

In the Taalum Ul Islam Ladies’ Madrassa, or seminary, where male teachers are barred from overhearing the voices of female pupils in person, students alternately send queries to the expert on the class laptop.

According to staff members who granted Reuters rare access to the madrassa in December, the number of students at the institution in Kandahar city has roughly doubled to around 400 in the past year due to the Taliban administration’s decision to prohibit girls and women from the majority secular high schools and universities.

Imran Khan, the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has said that the “Jail Bharo” (court arrest) movement will begin on Wednesday, beginning in Lahore, and blames the current coalition government for its “political victimisation” of his party officials and friends.

He warned the Pakistan Democratic Movement-led (PDM) government in his address to the nation on Friday from his home in Lahore’s Zaman Park, where he has been living since being shot in the legs on November 3 of last year. “We will fill jails, they [authorities] will have no space left to hide,” he said.

Following the filing of sedition charges against several of his party’s leaders, including Fawad Chaudhry, Azam Swati, and Shahbaz Gill, Imran Khan declared “Jail Bharo Tehreek” on February 4 and urged PTI members and supporters to get ready to march across the nation.

The former prime minister, who was removed from office after a vote of no-confidence in April of last year, said, “They want to enslave us by threatening to throw us in jails,” vowing to carry out the wishes of the authorities.

Greek foreign minister travels to Turkey as part of earthquake diplomacy

image 11

Nikos Dendias, the foreign minister of Greece, and Mevlut Cavusoglu, the foreign minister of Turkey, went to the earthquake-stricken regions of Turkiye on Sunday.

The trip was a part of renewed “seismic diplomacy” between the two uneasy friends, whose interactions have frequently been chilly, if not outright hostile. Three years after the two nations nearly started a war over two uninhabited islets in the Aegean Sea, something similar occurred in 1999.

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake that devastated Turkiye in August 1999 left nearly 18,000 people dead; the following month, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the Greek city of Athens left 143 people dead. The two nations sent rescuers to aid in each other’s efforts in both circumstances. The thawing of bilateral ties had received extensive coverage in the international press.

Cavusoglu thought back to a letter he had written at the time to TIME magazine as a private person.

“At the time, I advised against waiting for another earthquake to mend our relationships. As the foreign minister of Turkiye, I reiterate this. We must work to strengthen our bonds, Cavusoglu stated.

Rupee will strengthen against the dollar as Pakistan prepares to sign an IMF agreement

image 10 10

KARACHI: According to reports Sunday citing traders and analysts, the rupee is anticipated to begin its recovery drive against the US dollar as a result of the government’s efforts to secure the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) bailout programme having boosted the market’s positive sentiments and due to an increase in dollar supply.

The government appears committed to take certain preliminary steps that could assist in fulfilling the IMF requirements to finalise the state-level agreement with the international lender.

The local currency increased by around 2.18% against the dollar in the interbank market during the previous week, rising from 275.30 on Monday to 269.28 on Friday.

Islamabad and the IMF did not reach an agreement to release the funds from a $6.5 billion bailout during the fund’s 10-day visit, but both sides agreed to continue protracted negotiations because the South Asian country’s deepening economic crisis does not appear to have a quick fix.

In order to get additional aid, prevent default, and restore its foreign currency reserves, which have fallen to $2.9 billion, Pakistan must reach an agreement with the IMF for additional funding.
