Israel closes down regions near Gaza

image 137

JENIN: Following the nighttime detainment of two eminent Palestinian Islamic Jihad members, Israel’s army on Tuesday prohibited civilian access to areas close to the Gaza border, citing a potential for retaliation, according to military and Palestinian sources.

Israeli soldiers opened fire on a 17-year-old Palestinian during a late-night Monday raid in the volatile Jenin neighbourhood of the West Bank.

The teen was identified as Dirar al-Kafrayni by Islamic Jihad, which referred to him as “our noble martyr” and a member of the organisation. The second individual detained was Saadi’s son-in-law, a Jenin-based fundraisers for the terrorist group, according to the source.

In response to a “direct threat,” the Israeli military claimed it was barring civilian access to certain regions close to Gaza.

According to a statement from the army, “it was decided to block off areas and paths adjacent to the Gaza Strip security fence after terrorist activities were recognised with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist organisation.”

Israel also shut off the sole border point via which individuals could enter or exit Gaza, according to the government, which said that Prime Minister Yair Lapid was monitoring security.

In the cryptoverse, Bitcoin is having a good time

image 131

LONDON/NEW  YORK: For the first time in a long, bitcoin has had a decent month. After falling for several months, it increased by more than 17% in July, marking its highest performance since October. The increase in ether was 57%, the highest monthly gain since January 2021.

Investors believed that economic weakness would prevent the Fed from quickly tightening monetary policy, which is why the rally coincided with advances in riskier assets like equities.
The 40-day correlation between Bitcoin and the tech-focused Nasdaq is now 0.90, up from 0.41 in January. A correlation of 1 indicates that their prices move in perfect lockstep.

Unlike prior years when it would routinely turn negative, indicating they went in the other direction, the main cryptocurrency has been positively associated with the Nasdaq since late November.

by Staff Reporter

LAHORE: On Tuesday, Rajanpur and DG Khan in Punjab were visited by Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi. He oversaw relief efforts and gave eight lakh rupee cash help checks to the relatives of those who perished in the flood. He provided flood victims with unwavering assistance and made a fateha offer for the departed. The CM said that all flood-affected places would be classified as calamity-hit and added that hill torrents’ courses would be channelized to prevent harm.

He went to the relief operation centre in Rajanpur’s Shahpur neighbourhood and met with flood victims in addition to seeing relief efforts. Speaking on this occasion, the CM stated that the affected individuals are supported by the Punjab government, and their quick recovery is a top concern. He promised that those in need wouldn’t be abandoned and said that the government had set up medical camps where flood victims were receiving immunizations against diseases. He further stated that each family of the deceased is receiving Rs. 8 lakh in financial aid. China threatens ‘targeted military operations’ as Pelosi arrives in Taiwan

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday with a clear message for China, saying the US commitment to a democratic Taiwan is more important than ever, as China’s defense ministry announced in response that its military was put on high alert and will launch “targeted military operations”.
In a visit that drew immediate condemnation from Beijing, Pelosi became the first official visit to Taiwan by a speaker of the House in 25 years.
“Our congressional delegation’s visit to Taiwan honors America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant Democracy,” Pelosi said in a statement shortly after landing.
She added that the visit by her congressional delegation, which includes an overnight stay, was completely in line with longstanding US policy on Taiwan.
Discussions with Taiwanese leadership will focus on shared interests including advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific, Pelosi said.
“America’s solidarity with the 23 million people of Taiwan is more important today than ever, as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy,” Pelosi said in the statement, issued as China condemned her visit and said it would badly damage Sino-US relations.
In a Washington Post opinion piece released shortly after she landed, Pelosi slammed the Chinese Communist Party’s “brutal crackdown” against “political freedoms and human rights” in Hong Kong as well as Tibet. She went on to say that “Beijing is perpetrating genocide” against Uyghur Muslims and other minorities in Xinjiang.
Pelosi also outlined her reasons for visiting, praising Taiwan’s commitment to the democratic government while criticizing China as having dramatically increased tensions with Taiwan in recent years.
“In the face of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) accelerating aggression, our congressional delegation’s visit should be seen as an unequivocal statement that America stands with Taiwan,” Pelosi wrote.
China immediately condemned Pelosi’s visit, with the foreign ministry saying it seriously damages peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, “has a severe impact on the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, and seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
The ministry said it had lodged a strong protest with the United States.
Chinese warplanes buzzed the line dividing the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday before her arrival, and Chinese state media said the People’s Liberation Army would hold exercises near Taiwan from Thursday through Sunday.
As of Tuesday evening, the Chinese military has been put on high alert and will launch “targeted military operations” in response to Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, China’s defense ministry said.

Firefighters race to protect California town threatened by wildfire

Firefighters race to protect California town threatened by wildfire

Rain and cooler conditions brought some relief on Tuesday to hundreds of firefighters battling a wildfire in northern California that has killed two people and threatened the 8,000-strong town of Yreka.
The state fire department, CalFire, said that while the weather had “mitigated fire spread,” vegetation in the area “remains extremely dry” and in danger of being ignited by lightning strikes.
“The continued threat of thunderstorms and the associated strong, erratic winds could result in increased fire behavior,” CalFire said.
The McKinney fire burning in the Klamath National Forest near the border with Oregon is California’s largest wildfire so far this year — though it remains much smaller than last year’s Dixie Fire, which burned nearly one million acres.
More than 55,000 acres (22,000 hectares) of the sparsely populated forest have been ravaged and the blaze is zero percent contained, according to CalFire.
Firefighters are constructing containment lines to prevent the fire from spreading, including using bulldozers to build a firebreak to protect Yreka, the county seat of Siskiyou County.
The McKinney Fire has killed two people, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office.
Firefighters found two people dead on Sunday inside a burned-out car in the driveway of a home in the town of Klamath River.
Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue said the pair were likely caught in the swift-moving blaze as they tried to flee.
Sherri Marchetti-Perrault, who lived off of Highway 96, told the Los Angeles Times that her home had burned to the ground.
“When we left, everything was on fire,” Marchetti-Perrault told the newspaper. “It happened so fast. We left with the clothes on our backs. We couldn’t breathe and we couldn’t see.”
California, along with much of the western United States, is in the grip of its worst drought in more than 1,000 years.
The drought, exacerbated by man-made climate change, has left the countryside parched and vulnerable to the wildfires that naturally break out, making the blazes hotter, faster, and more destructive.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Siskiyou County, and more than 2,000 residents of the rural area are under evacuation orders.
According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, the fire has destroyed more than 100 structures — including homes, a grocery store, and a community center — in the area around Yreka.
“Surrounding areas should be ready to leave if needed. Please don’t hesitate to evacuate,” the county sheriff tweeted.
“I’m holding out trying not to leave too soon because I’m helping out my mom,” said Rafael Franco, who lives in the mandatory evacuation area.
“She’s not in the best physical health to get around,” Franco told AFP.
“At the last minute, if I see the fire cross the ridge where we are, we are going to head out and grab what we can and get going and hope for the best.”
Marjie Lawrence, who fled Klamath River on Friday night, said she went back to retrieve some belongings in case the fire spread to her home.
“We are taking stuff in case the house goes, we are taking things we want, but not too many,” Lawrence said.
The McKinney Fire comes just days after the Oak Fire near Yosemite National Park destroyed dozens of buildings and forced thousands to evacuate.
Other parts of the world have also faced intense wildfires this year, as scientists say climate change is making heatwaves more frequent and more intense, increasing the risk of fires.

England’s Kelly ‘always taking their shirt off to celebrate the winner

London: England match-winner Chloe Kelly has said she was never in doubt she would take her shirt off to celebrate scoring the decisive goal in Sunday’s Euro 2022 women’s final but did fear the video assistant referee (VAR) might spoil her moment in the spotlight.

With the game gone into extra time, the Manchester City forward scored in the 110th minute at Wembley as England defeated Germany 2-1.

The victory gave the Lionesses a first European Championship trophy and was the first time any England national side had won a major international tournament since the 1966 men’s World Cup, when the then West Germany were defeated 4-2 after extra-time in a Wembley final.

But in a significant change from 1966, when matches were controlled solely by the on-field officials, Kelly hesitated to celebrate after scoring from close range amid fears her goal might be disallowed by the VAR.

She did not have to wait long, however, with referee Kateryna Monzul awarding the goal following a quick conversation in her earpiece.

Kelly, as happens in many a men’s game, then celebrated a key goal by removing her shirt, with the photograph of the 24-year-old wheeling away in celebration one of the images of the tournament, evoking memories of American footballer Brandi Chastain’s similar reaction to scoring the winning goal in the 1999 women’s World Cup.

The 24-year-old was duly booked by Monzul — players are not permitted to take their shirt off after scoring a goal.

“It’s the best yellow card I have ever received,” Kelly told ITV’s Good Morning Britain television program on Tuesday.

“I was looking at the ref and thinking, ‘What is she calling here, is it a free-kick or a goal?’ And everything to do with VAR and things like that, you are thinking I don’t want to celebrate too much, I want to make sure.”

‘Go crazy’
Kelly added: “I didn’t want to take it off and they cancel the goal, so I was ready to take it off and go crazy.

“I think that moment, everything is a blur and you celebrate for what the moment is and not ‘Am I allowed to take my shirt off?’ Because as you know I am always taking my shirt off and going crazy!

“In men’s football they would be doing exactly the same so, as a woman, why can’t we?”

Former England men’s international John Barnes urged all those who had enjoyed the Lionesses’ performances to continue supporting female football by attending matches in the English game’s elite Women’s Super League.

“Unfortunately when they (the England women) play for their clubs, you have one or two thousand people turning up,” Barnes told Sky News.

“It is easy to be a fan when we’re at the (2023) World Cup but what about their bread and butter, the day-to-day with their clubs? That is when they really need the support for women’s football to really go to the next level.”

Tuesday saw the Lionesses announce they had already sold more than 20,000 tickets for their next home game, a World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg in Stoke on September 6.

England return to action in a qualifier away to Austria three days earlier.

Sarina Wiegman’s side currently top Group D with a maximum of 24 points from eight matches, five points ahead of nearest rivals Austria.

Olympic champ Thompson

Olympic champ Thompson-Herah launches bid for Commonwealth sprint gold

London: Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah pledged Tuesday to work her way “back up to the top” after a disappointing world championship as she launched her bid for 100m glory at the Commonwealth Games.
Thompson-Herah finished third behind fellow Jamaican sprint stars Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson in the 100m at last month’s world championships in Eugene, Oregon.
It was a disappointing performance for the 30-year-old, who topped the podium at last year’s Tokyo Olympics in both the 100m and 200m, retaining the titles she had won in Rio.
Thompson-Herah is the only one of the three Jamaican sprint stars to enter the 100m in Birmingham, where the track and field events started on Tuesday.
“Physically, I’m feeling good,” she said after running 10.99sec to finish second in the women’s 100m heats behind Nigeria’s Grace Nwokocha.
“That run was pretty comfortable and relaxing, and hopefully I can take that through the competition.”
Addressing her failure to match her Olympic achievements at the recent worlds, she added: “You have to believe in yourself because no one else can believe in you.
“I wanted to do well this year. It’s not on God’s watch, it’s on my watch. Whatever time I put together, I will work my way back up to the top.”
In the men’s 100m heats at Alexander Stadium, Sri Lanka’s Yupun Abeykoon was quickest, in a time of 10.06, ahead of Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala
Defending heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson led the way with 2,032 points after the 100m hurdles and high jump but her jump of 1.84m was well below her personal best of 1.98.
Australia’s Taneille Crase is 17 points behind the England star, who finished a disappointing eighth at the world championships.
In round one of the women’s 800m, Jamaica’s Natoya Goule was quickest in qualifying, with England’s Olympic and world silver medallist Keely Hodgkinson and Scotland’s Laura Muir also safely through.
Muir, who followed her 1,500m silver medal at last year’s Olympics with bronze at the world championships, said she was pleased with her opening run.
“I had to run fast to do that because the standard here is so high but it’s great to be in that final,” said Muir, who is seeking her first ever Commonwealth medal.
“It’s not quite home turf but it’s close enough,” she said. “I’m lucky to have a lot of friends and family here along with all the British support.”
Uganda’s Olympic bronze medallist Jacob Kiplimo, who also finished third at the recent world championships, is favorite to win the men’s 10,000m final, during Tuesday’s evening session.

New Liga Spanish football

New Liga sponsors EA Sports to ‘revolutionize’ Spanish football

Madrid: US video games giant Electronic Arts will replace Spanish bank Santander as the title sponsor of La Liga from summer 2023, the league announced on Tuesday.
The sponsorship will be in the name of the company’s EA Sports division.
La Liga said in a statement that the deal would yield more than just increased revenue.
“Starting with the 23/24 season, the new agreement lays the foundations to revolutionize the football experience, seeks the integration of the physical and virtual worlds, involves improvements in broadcasting and the commitment of both companies to grassroots football,” said La Liga on its web site.
Spanish media reported that the agreement is for five years and will bring La Liga between 30 million and 40 million euros (30.6m-40.8m dollars) annually.
The deal with Santander, which began in 2016, will end after this season. It is worth 17 million euros a year.
For the last six years, the official name of the Spanish first division has been “LaLiga Santander”, and the second division has been “LaLiga Smartbank”, after a subsidiary of the bank.
“EA SPORTS represents the cutting edge of interactive football experiences, while La Liga spearheads football competitions around the world with unrivaled fan experiences on the pitch, in broadcast and digitally,” said Liga president Javier Tebas.
La Liga’s sponsorship revenue has grown from 50m euros in 2016-17 to 155m euros last season.
Over the same period, revenue from TV rights has almost doubled from 825m euros in 2016-2017 to 1,625m euros in 2021-2022.
California-based Electronic Arts and its EA Sports franchise are the publishers of the popular video game FIFA, although the company will end its long association with the governing body of world football in 2023 and rebrand the game EA Sports FC.
Liga giants Barcelona have also recently announced two deals with tech companies saying they would add to the football experience.
On Monday, Barcelona announced the sale of 24.5 percent of its media arm Barca Studios to internet company Socios.com “to accelerate the club’s audiovisual, blockchain, NFT and Web.3 strategy.”
In July, Barcelona welcomed Swedish music streaming company Spotify as a shirt sponsor by tweeting: “We’re partnering with Spotify to bring football and music together as you’ve never seen before.”

Police charge UK

Police charge UK man over crossbow threat to Queen

London: Police on Tuesday charged a 20-year-old man with an offense under Britain’s 1842 Treason Act after arresting him armed with a crossbow at Windsor Castle as Queen Elizabeth II spent Christmas Day there.
Jaswant Singh Chail, from Southampton in southern England, has also been charged with making threats to kill and possession of an offensive weapon following the incident at the castle, southwest of London, last year.
He is currently in custody and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in the British capital on August 17, London’s Metropolitan Police said.
“The CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) has authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Jaswant Singh Chail with offences after he was arrested in the grounds of Windsor Castle on 25 December 2021 carrying a crossbow,” Nick Price of the CPS, which oversees prosecutions in England and Wales, said.

“This decision has been made following an investigation carried out by the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command,” he added.
Chail has been charged under a section of the Treason Act, which makes it an offense to assault the Queen or have a firearm or offensive weapon in her presence with intent to injure or alarm her, or to cause a breach of peace.
It is extremely rare for charges to be brought under this particular 180-year-old treason law.
In the last case, Briton Marcus Sarjeant was sentenced to five years imprisonment in 1981 after pleading guilty to firing blank shots at the monarch when she was on parade.
However, William Joyce — also known as Lord Haw Haw, who collaborated with Germany during World War II — was the last person to be convicted under the separate and more serious 1351 Treason Act.
Following the Windsor Castle incident, the Met said that security processes were triggered within moments of the breach and that the individual did not enter any buildings.
It happened as the Queen spent a low-key Christmas Day at the castle with her eldest son and heir to the throne, Prince Charles, and his wife Camilla.

Queen

The Queen usually celebrates Christmas at her Sandringham estate in eastern England, but she remained in Windsor last year as a precautionary measure amid resurgent Covid-19 cases.
Although the intruder was intercepted quickly, it recalled an earlier, more serious intrusion in 1982.
On that occasion, a man in his 30s entered Queen Elizabeth’s private chambers at Buckingham Palace while she was in bed before police apprehended him.
Last summer, a man was arrested after scaling the gates of the Palace.
In 2020, a homeless man scaled its walls and bedded down for the night in its grounds before being caught.

Al-Qaeda faces a succession quandary after the Zawahiri killing

PARIS: The killing of Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri in a US drone strike will not affect the operations of the terror group’s affiliates across the world, but opens the way for a potentially troubled succession process.
The Egyptian jihadist, who the United States says has been killed in a hideout in the Afghan capital Kabul, never even attempted to replicate the charisma and influence of his predecessor Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks against the United States.
But after US special forces killed bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011, he played a key role in encouraging the decentralization of the group, which resulted in Al-Qaeda franchises emerging all over the planet.
These include the Al-Shabaab who still control a large chunk of rural Somalia, the JNIM active in West Africa — in particular Mali, and the Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) branch.
“He accepted major new players in the Al-Qaeda network,” said Hans-Jakob Schindler, director of the NGO Counter-Extremism Project and a former UN advisor.
“So it is a blow to Al-Qaeda,” he said. But “it’s not going to stop anything” was planned by Al-Qaeda affiliates.

Zawahiri killing edited

The most likely successors pointed to by analysts contacted by AFP include two other Egyptians.
One contender is Saif al-Adel, a former Egyptian special forces lieutenant-colonel and figure in the old guard of Al-Qaeda, whose presence has been reported in Iran.
The Islamic republic’s Shiite rulers officially oppose the Sunni Al-Qaeda but opponents have repeatedly accused Iran of cooperating with the network and giving sanctuary to its leaders.
Also in the running is Abu Abd al-Karim al-Masri who is part of the leadership of the Syrian jihadist group Hurras al-Din and is believed to be in Syria.
“Zawahiri was not involved in the day-to-day decision-making of the affiliates… but you need a figurehead with a certain prominence and seniority because all the heads of all the affiliates need to swear personal loyalty to him,” said Schindler.
“So replacing him is going to be a bit of a challenge.”
Rita Katz, the director, and co-founder of the SITE Intelligence Group said the Al-Qaeda succession was the “big question” in the wake of the killing of Zawahiri.
“Unlike the situation after Osama bin Laden’s killing, so much of its leadership has moved to Syria, where many were killed,” she said.
She said that little is known about the whereabouts of Adel but emphasized it was far from certain he was still in the Islamic republic, where observers believe he spent some two decades.
“Rumours are that he was released from prison in Iran and moved to Syria. However not much is known,” she said.
Adel joined the Egyptian Islamic Jihad group in the 1980s. He was arrested but later freed, and traveled to Afghanistan to join Al-Qaeda under Zawahiri.
Scrutiny over Tehran’s alleged relationship with Al-Qaeda intensified in August 2020 following the killing in Tehran, reportedly by Israeli agents, of Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah, the group’s former number two under Zawahiri and known by his nom-de-guerre of Abu Mohammed al-Masri.
This prompted then US secretary of state Mike Pompeo to claim — just a week before his boss president Donald Trump left office — that Iran was the “new Afghanistan” for Al-Qaeda militants, a statement that was met with some skepticism by analysts.
The Soufan Center, a US-based security research organization, said the killing of a number of Al-Qaeda old guard figures in recent years had left the network with a “dwindling bench of potential successors”.
It said Adel’s “long presence” in overwhelmingly Shiite Iran “might taint his candidature in certain circles”.
Younger Al-Qaeda cadres may prefer a figure like Masri who in Syria “worked assiduously to cultivate ties with potential recruits more focused on local targets and motivated by parochial grievances in regions engulfed by civil war and insurgency”.
“The selection of Al-Qaeda’s next leader will tell a great deal about the future plans of the organization,” it said.

Following complaints from persons with disabilities, Beyonce has decided to remove the objectionable lyrics from her song “Heated.”

A spokesman for Beyonce confirmed Monday that the singer will take the objectionable term out of her new song, “Heated,” after it was criticised by activists.

The single from the US pop superstar’s most recent album Renaissance, on which she initially uttered the lyrics “Spazzin’ on that a, spazz on that a,” will be redone.

An email from a Beyonce representative to AFP stated that the word, which was not used on purpose to harm anyone, would be replaced.

The dance music, which was co-written with Canadian rapper Drake, seems to employ the word “spaz” in the slang sense of momentarily losing control or acting erratically.

But advocates for people with disabilities pointed out that the word comes from “spastic.”

She remarked, “Me and Rosie have always been pretty close. We have essentially been sisters since she was born.Naturally, she said, “Rosie and I would be with each other like every single day when me and Rosie used to be in America together filming The Ellen Show.” So, yes, we used to see one other more frequently.
