Australian swimmers eye Olympic glory after Commonwealth domination

By NEWS DESK

Birmingham :Emma McKeon, Ariarne Titmus and the rest of Australia’s swimming team are heading home after a stellar Commonwealth Games with their eyes firmly set on the 2024 Olympics.

Australia won 25 of 52 golds in the Birmingham pool, with their established stars supported by an exciting cast of up-and-coming talents, including teenager Mollie O’Callaghan.

McKeon was the headline performer. She won six golds, a bronze and a silver to take her career Games tally to 20 medals — more than any other athlete in Commonwealth history.

Her 14 golds are also a record.

Titmus swept the women’s 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle events and was also part of the winning team in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Kaylee McKeown won four golds while Elijah Winnington was one of the standout male performers.

Australia did not have the US team to contend with in Birmingham. Yet the quality and depth of Australia’s squad, with swimmers who skipped the World Championships in Budapest in June returning, will make their greatest rivals take notice two years away from the Olympics.

Titmus, speaking a day after the end of the swimming, said fierce competition within the squad pushed them to greater heights.

The 21-year-old, who won 200m and 400m freestyle gold at last year’s Tokyo Olympics, said it was often tougher to qualify for the Australian team than to reach Commonwealth finals.

“Just to get onto the team is a task in itself and people like Mollie are up and coming and pushing you along and it’s great motivation,” she said.

“And as I’m getting older I feel as though I’m becoming more and more hunted but that’s a good thing I think. It keeps me on my toes, keeps me motivated and I’m excited to see how much better I can get.”

Titmus said her focus had switched immediately after Tokyo to the 2024 Olympics in Paris — where she is expected to go head to head again with US star Katie Ledecky.

“There’s always hype around it because it’s such an amazing rivalry,” said the Australian, who skipped the world championships to focus on the Commonwealths.

“Who would have thought that two women would be swimming as fast as we are over the 400m at the same time?

“But I think it’s good also having younger girls coming up. I used to be one of those younger ones who was coming up so it’s great for the sport.”

O’Callaghan won four gold medals and two silvers in Birmingham, including the 100m freestyle.

The 18-year-old, who came away from last year’s Covid-delayed Olympics with two relay golds and won the 100m individual freestyle in Budapest in June, said she now felt she belonged on the team.

She too said she was focussed on Paris.

“Last year was about learning and getting experience. I absolutely loved being on a relay team,” she said.

“I’ve gained so much experience and so much support I just can’t wait.”

O’Callaghan said the great strength of the Australian team was that “there’s always going to be someone coming up”.

“I guess it’s the support, and the previous swimmers and the current swimmers who guide us and I guess the depth in Australia definitely pushes us to do more and achieve more and I think it’s mainly those factors that make us so great in Australia.”

Team spokesman Ian Hanson said another reason for Australia’s success was their coaching.

“The people that don’t get the credit in all this are the coaches,” he said. “I think we’ve got a system of coaching Down Under that’s come from a great tradition of great coaches.

“I think these athletes are on a performance pathway to Paris. We were the last team to leave that pool last night. They had a big team meeting.

“The other teams walked past them and saw what was going on in the Australian camp and the unity in that team and the comradeship is just extraordinary but you don’t get these results unless you work your butt off.”

Foreign reserves drops

The SBP’s foreign exchange holdings decreased by $190 million

KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) weekly fall in the country’s foreign exchange reserves was sustained.According to data issued by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Thursday, the SBP’s foreign exchange reserves were $8,385.4 million on July 29, down $190 million from $8,575.16 on July 22.

The drop, according to the central bank, resulted from other payments and external debt.
It should be mentioned that Pakistan has an import cover of less than 1.5 months with its current level of foreign exchange reserves.

Nevertheless, China extended a $2 billion loan in the form of a State Administration Foreign Exchange (SAFE) deposit for the economy of cash-strapped Pakistan for another year.

Interestingly, he has two Ls written instead of one on all of his official documents, including his marriage certificate and driver’s licence. The revelation stunned Grainger, a factory worker from Derbyshire, who was also surprised. He continued by saying that his parents had also been misspelling his name all this time.

ISLAMABAD: PTI leader Senator Faisal Javed asserted on Thursday that PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s name has been placed to the Exit Control List by the coalition government (ECL).
He made his remarks while participating in PTI’s jalsa at Islamabad’s F-9 park.

However, sources stated that the government did not consent to include the names of PTI leaders, including Imran Khan, on the ECL during a cabinet meeting today.

Former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Pervez Khattak criticised the government, saying it was “here to conspire against the nation, but the people of Pakistan won’t allow that.”

“Imran Khan has the current government, which is made up of thieves, terrified. As long as the country supports the PTI chairman, these mice [government leaders] won’t be able to do anything “Added he.He claimed that these leaders came together not out of a sense of love but rather to steal the nation.

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Inquiry Agency (FIA) will conduct a thorough investigation into the foreign funding case involving PTI, according to Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb’s statement on Thursday.

Aurangzeb declared at a press conference held after the government’s cabinet meeting that an investigation has been launched against “all those implicated in this crime” as of right now.

She added that “all of them would have been in jail if the verdict had come under Imran Khan’s era,” adding that “the government would take measures in light of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s verdict and there will be a probe as to where the funds were used.”

The communications minister emphasised that Akbar S. Babar, a founding member of the PTI, was the one who submitted the plea and that the government had nothing to do with the foreign funding case.

Facebook will discontinue its live shopping service

image 177 3

On October 1, Facebook’s live shopping service, which functioned like QVC’s Livestream and allowed producers to display and sell their goods to their audience, would be discontinued. Instead, the business wants to concentrate on Reels.

TechCrunch explained that although Facebook’s shopping feature would be discontinued, Instagram would continue to offer it. Reels on Facebook and Instagram, a short-form video product from Meta, will now be the focus of the firm’s attention, according to the statement made by the company.

The shopping function, which was initially launched in Thailand in 2018 and made its way throughout the globe by 2020, allowed influencers to organise their own shopping sessions by streaming their products and making them available for purchase.

In contrast to the rest of the globe, China saw considerable success with the film. Due to a lack of interest, TikTok said last month that it was limiting the use of its shopping tab function in the US and Europe.

Parts of blast-damaged Beirut silos collapse on anniversary

Several more grain silos damaged by the 2020 Beirut port explosion collapsed Thursday, as hundreds marched toward them to mark the second anniversary of the disaster.

ADVERTISING

AFP correspondents saw parts of the gutted structure fall down while local media said at least four towers had collapsed, only days after a similar incident.

Experts had been warning for days that the silos could collapse imminently after recording unprecedented inclination rates.

Lama Hashem, a 30-year-old who took part in Thursday’s protest march said the incident reignited her blast trauma.

“Im seeing the same sight, from almost the same place, after two years,” she told AFP, holding back tears. “Its traumatic.”

The heavily damaged silos have become a grim reminder of the August 4, 2020 explosion of a stockpile of ammonium nitrate fertiliser that had caught fire.

The tragedy killed more than 200 people and damaged swaths of Beirut, but two years on, no official has been held accountable.

Since the blast, experts have warned that parts of the silos are at risk of collapse due to severe damage and inclination.

The government in April ordered the silos’ demolition, but this has been suspended, partially because of objections from victims’ relatives who want them preserved as a memorial.

“The silos are our memory” said Wafaa Zaher, a 60-year-old whose son died at the port during the explosion.

“We are waiting for the truth to cool our hearts,” she said from the protest.

Prince Harry “spikes his guns,” but the Queen manages to “cool” the situation

According to a royal specialist, the Queen has attempted to mediate the conflict between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Prince Harry has sharpened his weapons to retaliate against the royal family with his memoir, according to Duncan Larcombe, a former royal editor of The Sun, who spoke to True Royal earlier this year.

The Duke of Sussex is purportedly reconsidering the harm he might cause with the book, which is to be published later this year, as a result of the Queen’s involvement.

Going back to Britain and specifically mentioning the Queen’s presence, Mr. Larcombe said: “I genuinely wonder then, and I think Prince Harry seems to have slightly spiked his guns when he saw the Queen on his way to the Invictus Games earlier this year.

During the ceremonies for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Harry and Meghan also paid her a visit. When the pair arrived, they were given a special meeting with the king.

Prince Harry, according to a royal biographer, served as a type of jester at Duchess Camilla’s wedding. Harry used to make goofy faces to cheer up his grandmother Queen Elizabeth, according to Angela Levin.

She claimed that the Duke of Sussex put his face on the glass window during the wedding’s second reception in order to make himself look foolish. Prince Harry has become somewhat woke, so we don’t see much fun in him anymore, she remarked.

Currently, Prince Harry, his wife Meghan Markle, and their two kids reside in California.
Since he wed Meghan and moved to the US, the Duke of Sussex has received very little good coverage from British tabloids and certain local media.

A representative for movie distributor Warner Bros announced on Wednesday that a follow-up to the Oscar-winning psychological thriller “Joker,” which is based on one of the most well-known comic book villains in the world, will hit theatres on October 4, 2024.

Joaquin Phoenix will reprise his role as the main character in “Joker: Folie a Deux,” for which he won the Academy Award for best actor in the original 2019 film, which told the origin tale of Batman’s archenemy The Joker.

Todd Phillips directed and produced the 2019 movie, which received an Oscar nomination for best picture and won for best lead actor and best original score.

The plot followed the psychological decline of the movie’s lead, failing party clown and want tobe comic Arthur Fleck, as well as the social pressures that changed him from a despondent loner to a ruthless killer who instigated a wave of violence in the made-up city of Gotham City.

Chelsea’s Koulibaly says no one can stop him representing Senegal

London New Chelsea signing Kalidou Koulibaly has insisted he will never let anyone stop him playing football for Senegal.

download 24 2

The Senegal captain said African nations deserved more respect after the president of his former club, Napoli, said he would only sign African or South American players willing to miss competitions with their national teams.

“Don’t talk to me about Africans anymore,” Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis told business website Wall Street Italia.

“I wish them well, but either they sign a waiver for the African Cup or else…”

“Between that tournament and the World Cup qualifiers in South America, these players are never available!”

But Senegal captain Koulibaly, who led his country to the Africa Cup of Nations title earlier this year before joining Chelsea in a reported £34 million ($41 million) move from Serie A side Napoli was unimpressed.

“Nobody ever told me not to go to AFCON or something like this,” said Koulibaly during a news conference Wednesday.

“Maybe sometimes they try to ask my manager or something like this.

“But me, now as captain of Senegal, when AFCON comes I have to be the first one there, the first one in Senegal.”

Koulibaly, who has signed a four-year contract with Chelsea following the purchase of the club by US businessman Todd Boehly’s consortium, added: “Nobody can tell me not to go to my national team. I have a lot of love for my national team, the team that I play for.

“So, if someone told me to do that, it would be the only time that I can fight with somebody.

“The way we feel all the time with my national team, we are all respectful, we wait for players to come from the Premier League, and everybody is happy to be here.

“Everybody thinks the same as me in the national team. If someone told them not to come they would always fight to come.

“This is the most important thing. Everybody has to give us respect.”

Koulibaly will bolster a defence now without Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen after they each left Stamford Bridge.

He will wear the number 26 shirt made famous by Chelsea great John Terry having sought permission from the Blues legend.

“I called John and at the beginning he didn’t believe it was me, he thought it was a joke,” Koulibaly explained. “So he called the team manager to ask if it was really me.

“I know that it’s a very important number for John, but it’s also a very important number for me too, because I took it at Napoli.

“And when he said yes I was very happy, because I know what he did for the club and for the supporters here.

“I wanted to tell everybody that I asked him before, because I didn’t want to disrespect a legend of the club.

Female dance acts largely ignored by radio, study says

Less than one per cent of the dance music played on UK radio is made by a female solo artist or all-female band, a new study suggests.

Women are also under-represented on the charts, accounting for just 5% of dance hits, according to the report, which examines gender imbalance in the scene.

download 22 2

To get heard, it says, Kacts have to collaborate with male producers.

Songs with women as the “featured” vocalist make up 44% of dance music on the radio and 37% of chart hits.

The pattern can be seen in the careers of musicians like Ella Henderson and Raye, whose collaborations with male producers like Jax Jones and Nathan Dawe often chart higher than their solo material.

‘The same old boys playing the same old line-ups’
The women behind the male DJs on the decks
The research, which covered the years 2020-2021, was conducted by the Jaguar Foundation – which is the brainchild of Radio 1 DJ Jaguar Bingham.

download 21 3

She says she was “disappointed and saddened” by the findings, which looked at female and non-binary representation across the club scene, from the board room to the charts.

Jaguar believes the lack of female dance producers is “systemic”, with many women discouraged from pursuing a career in music at an early age.

“If I think about when I was at school, boys were always encouraged to do more technical things like music production,” she says.

“As a result, there are more men in that field, so they managed to take over the scene and become the majority. So anyone who isn’t [a man] maybe feels shunned, doesn’t feel comfortable or doesn’t feel welcome.”

However, Warner Bros said the move reflected its “leadership’s strategic shift”.

Warner Bros also confirmed that Scoob! Holiday Haunt would be scrapped.

A spokesperson for the firm said: “The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max.

“Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance.

“We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future.”

The unusual move follows a change in leadership after Warner Bros merged with Discovery in May 2021, with David Zaslav its new CEO.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Zaslav has prioritised cost-cutting measures and refocusing the company on creating theatrical films rather than projects for streaming.

Pakistan ‘deeply concerned’ over China-US confrontation

Pakistan expressed “deep concern” over the confrontation of arch-rivals China and the US after House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the Taiwan Strait, which, according to the Foreign Office, has serious implications for regional peace and stability.
In a statement, Foreign Office Spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said Pakistan reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the “One-China” policy and supports China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The statement comes after China furiously condemned the highest-level US visit to Taiwan in 25 years as Pelosi hailed the self-ruled island as “one of the freest societies in the world” and pledged American solidarity.

Pelosi arrived with a congressional delegation on an unannounced visit late on Tuesday, defying China’s repeated warnings, in what she said shows unwavering US commitment to Taiwan’s democracy.
However, the FO spokesperson said that the world is already reeling from a critical security scenario as a result of the Ukraine crisis, which has destabilized worldwide food and energy security.
The spokesperson said the world cannot afford another crisis that has negative consequences for global peace, security, and the economy.
He said Pakistan strongly believes that inter-state relations should be based on mutual respect, non-interference in internal affairs, and peaceful resolution of issues by upholding the principles of the UN charter, international law, and bilateral agreements.

Beijing demonstrated its anger with Pelosi’s presence on the island with a burst of military activity in surrounding waters, summoning the US ambassador in Beijing and halting several agricultural imports from Taiwan.

Some of China’s planned military exercises will take place within Taiwan’s 12 nautical mile sea and air territory, according to Taiwan’s defense ministry, an unprecedented move a senior defense official described to reporters as “amounting to a sea and air blockade of Taiwan”.

UN chief slams ‘excessive’ profits of oil, gas firms amid Ukraine war

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday accused oil and gas companies of making “excessive” profits from the energy crisis sparked by the war in Ukraine, calling it “immoral.”

Guterres, releasing a UN report on the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, urged governments to tax the companies’ earnings.

“It is immoral for oil and gas companies to be making record profits from this energy crisis on the backs of the poorest people and communities and at a massive cost to the climate,” the UN chief told reporters.

“I urge all governments to tax these excessive profits and use the funds to support the most vulnerable people through these difficult times,” Guterres said.

“And I urge people everywhere to send a clear message to the fossil fuel industry and their financiers that this grotesque greed is punishing the poorest and most vulnerable people, while destroying our only common home, the planet,” he said.

Guterres said the combined profits of the largest energy companies in the first quarter of the year were nearly $100 billion.

With the rise in oil and gas prices, BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron and Shell also reported enormous profits in the second quarter.

The UN chief said that between now and the end of the year, 345 million people will be “acutely food insecure” or at “at a high risk of food insecurity” in 82 countries, an increase of 47 million due to the impact of the war in Ukraine.

Guterres warned that “many developing countries are drowning in debt, without access to finance, and struggling to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic and could go over the brink.”

“We are already seeing the warning signs of a wave of economic, social and political upheaval that would leave no country untouched,” he said.

Iraq’s Sadr demands new polls as political crisis escalates

Baghdad : Powerful Shiite leader Moqtada Sadr, whose bloc won the most seats in Iraq’s elections last year, demanded Wednesday that parliament be dissolved and new elections be called.

Nearly 10 months on from the last elections, the country still has no government and no new prime minister or president after repeated squabbles between factions over forming a coalition.

In the latest political turmoil to strike the oil-rich but war-scarred country, Sadr called for a “revolutionary and peaceful process, then early democratic elections after a dissolution of parliament”.

“I am certain that the majority of the population is exasperated by the ruling class in its entirety, including some (politicians) belonging to my movement”, Sadr said.

His televised speech came as his supporters occupied parliament for a fifth consecutive day, in protest at a nomination for prime minister by a rival Shiite faction, the Iran-backed Coordination Framework.

Supporters of that rival faction have in recent days accused Sadr of attempting to launch a coup.

“From now on there will be no more old-guard politicians, whatever their affiliation,” Sadr added.

Sadr, who once led an anti-US militia and who has millions of devoted followers, noted that he also had “no interest” in negotiating with his rivals.

‘Risk of escalation’
Surrounding parliament, the cleric’s supporters have set up an encampment with tents and food stalls, and Sadr on Wednesday called on them to continue.

Taliban leaders gather after the US says Zawahiri killed

Top leaders of Afghanistan’s Taliban were holding discussions on Wednesday about how to respond to a US drone strike in Kabul that the United States said killed al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, three sources in the group said.
The United States killed Zawahiri with a missile fired from a drone while he stood on a balcony at his Kabul hideout on Sunday, US officials said, the biggest blow to the militants since Osama bin Laden was shot dead more than a decade ago.
The Taliban have not confirmed Zawahiri’s death.
Officials of the group, long-time allies of al Qaeda, initially confirmed the Sunday drone strike but said the house that was hit was empty.
“There are meetings at a very high level on whether they should react to the drone strike, and in case they decide to, then what is the proper way,” a Taliban leader who holds an important position in Kabul told Reuters.
The official, who said there had been lengthy leadership discussions for two days, declined to be identified. He did not confirm that Zawahiri was in the house that the missile struck.
How the Taliban react could have significant repercussions as the group seeks international legitimacy, and access to billions of dollars in frozen funds, following their defeat of a US-backed government a year ago.
Zawahiri, an Egyptian doctor, was closely involved on September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States and was one of the world’s most wanted men.
His death in Kabul raises questions about whether he received sanctuary from the Taliban, who had assured the United States as part of a 2020 agreement on the withdrawal of US-led forces that they would not harbour other militant groups.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the Taliban had “grossly violated” the agreement by hosting and sheltering Zawahiri.
Outside a tight circle of top Taliban leaders, group members appeared in the dark about whether Zawahiri was actually in Kabul, let alone his fate.
Another Taliban official confirmed the high-level meetings but said he did not know what was being discussed and he did not believe Zawahiri was in the house.
Suhail Shaheen, the designated Taliban representative to the United Nations, who is based in Doha, told journalists he had received no word on the Taliban position.
“I am awaiting details and reaction from Kabul,” he told reporters in a message.

England’s Euro 2022 winners urge next PM to support girls’ football

London
:England’s Euro 2022 winning footballers on Wednesday urged the two candidates vying to become the UK’s next prime minister to ensure that all girls have access to the sport at school.

All 23 members of the squad, which beat Germany 2-1 in Sunday’s final at a sold-out Wembley Stadium, signed an open letter to Conservative Party leadership candidates Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, calling on their help to “create real change in this country.”

“Currently only 63 percent of girls can play football in PE (physical education) lessons. The reality is we are inspiring young girls to play football, only for many to end up going to school and not being able to play,” they wrote.

“This is something that we all experienced growing up.”

The players asked the two candidates to pledge to ensure that all girls have access to at least two hours of PE sessions each week, where football is offered.

“We have made incredible strides in the women’s game, but this generation of schoolgirls deserves more,” they wrote.

“They deserve to play football at lunchtime, they deserve to play football in PE lessons and they deserve to believe they can one day play for England.

“We want to create real change in this country and we are asking you, if you were to become Prime Minister on 5 September, to help us achieve that change.”

Truss’s campaign responded by saying the candidate “is committed to investigating what prevents schools from delivering the recommended minimum of two hours PE per week.”

Milky Way’s origins will be investigated by new telescope

Milky Way

Scientists have upgraded one of the world’s most powerful devices with new technology that will reveal the formation of our Milky way galaxy in unprecedented detail.

The William Herschel Telescope (WHT) in La Palma, Spain, will be able to catalog five million stars per hour.
A super-fast mapping device linked to WHT will analyze the composition of each star as well as its speed of travel.
It will demonstrate how our Milky Way galaxy evolved over billions of years.
Prof Gavin Dalton of Oxford University has spent more than a decade developing the ‘Weave’ instrument.

He told me he was “overjoyed” that it was ready to go.
“It’s a fantastic achievement by many people to make this happen, and it’s fantastic to have it working,” he said. “The next step is a new adventure, which is fantastic!”
Weave instrument: It resembles a large metal disc crisscrossed by fiber-optic tubes pointing in all directions. It is hovered over by robotic arms.

Weave has been installed on the WHT, which is perched atop a mountain on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma. The name WHT Enhanced Area Velocity Explorer refers to exactly what it does.
It is an engineering marvel with 80,000 separate parts.
Astronomers identify the positions of a thousand stars for each patch of sky where the WHT is pointed. The nimble robotic fingers of Weave then precisely place a fiber-optic – a light-transmitting tube – on each location on a plate, pointing towards its corresponding star.

These fibers are essentially miniature telescopes. Each instrument captures light from a single star and channels it to another. This divides it into a rainbow spectrum, which contains the star’s origin and history.

All of this is completed in less than an hour. While this is happening, the fiber optics for the next thousand stars are placed on the reverse side of the plate, which flips over to analyze the next set of targets once the previous survey is finished.

Over billions of years, it grew through successive mergers with other small galaxies. Along with the addition of stars from the new galaxies that join ours, each merger shakes things up enough to result in the formation of brand new stars.

Weave can calculate the speed, direction, age, and composition of each star it observes, resulting in a moving picture of stars in the Milky Way. Prof Dalton claims that by extrapolating backward, it will be possible to reconstruct the entire formation of the Milky Way in unprecedented detail.
“We’ll be able to trace the galaxies that have been absorbed as the Milky Way has grown over cosmic time – and see how each absorption triggers new star formation,” he explained.

Dr. Marc Balcells, the WHT’s overall director, told BBC News that he believed Weave would change our understanding of how galaxies form.
“We have been told for decades that we are living in a golden age of astronomy, but what lies ahead is far more important.

“Weave will answer questions that astronomers have been trying to answer for decades, such as how many pieces come together to form a large galaxy and how many galaxies were combined to form the Milky Way.”
“There will be a huge amount of things that we will discover that we did not expect to find,” she said. “Because the Universe is brimming with surprises.”

Bullfighting fans attend the festival in southern France as opponents call for an outright ban

As thousands of bullfighting aficionados gather across southern France for traditional summer ferias, opponents of the practice are reviving their fight for an outright ban, confident that public opinion is finally on their side.
“I think the majority of French people share the view that bullfights are immoral, a spectacle that no longer has its place in the 21st century,” said Aymeric Caron, a popular former TV journalist and animal rights activist who was recently elected to parliament as part of the hard-left France Unbowed party.
For years, critics have sought a final legal blow against what they call a cruel and archaic ritual, but none of the draft bills presented have ever been approved for debate by National Assembly lawmakers. French courts have also routinely rejected lawsuits lodged by animal rights activists, most recently in July 2021 in Nimes, home to one of France’s most famous bullfighting events.
But Caron, based in Paris, told AFP that the time was ripe for a new proposal given growing concerns about animal welfare, with a draft bill to be submitted this week.
“I do indeed hope this bill will be debated in parliament in November… it would be a first,” he said.
The prospect seems all the more likely after France Unbowed won dozens of new seats in recent elections, helping to strip President Emmanuel Macron of his centrist majority in parliament.
The goal is to modify an animal welfare law that allows exceptions for bullfights — as well as cock fighting — when it can be shown that they are “uninterrupted local traditions.”
Such exceptions are granted to cities including Bayonne and the medieval jewel of Mont-de-Marsan in southwest France near Spain, where the practice has its origins, and along the Mediterranean coast including Arles, Beziers and Nimes.
‘Respecting the animal’ For Caron, “it’s not a French tradition, it’s a Spanish custom that was imported to France in the 19th century to please the wife of Napoleon III, who was from Andalusia,” the countess Eugenie de Montijo.
That argument is unlikely to convince the jostling crowds who packed the streets of Bayonne for the bullfighting feria that ended Sunday, a sea of fans clad all in white except for bright red bandanas or sashes.
“The people who want to ban it don’t understand it. Bullfighting is a drama that brings you closer to death… You’re afraid, but that’s a part of life,” said Jean-Luc Ambert, who came with friends from the central Auvergne region.
Like many other fans, his friend Francoise insisted that bullfighting is an art as much as a sport, where “a man puts his life on the line while respecting the animal.”
“We’re not trying to convert anyone — I just want the people against it to leave us alone,” she told.
