Google declared that it will stop responding to pointless queries in an effort to enhance the “featured snippets” offering of its search engine.Google’s head of search Pandu Nayak wrote in a blog post that the results’ current presentation isn’t “the most helpful.”

Google would joyfully respond with “1865” if a user inquired, for instance, “when did Mickey Mouse murder Abraham Lincoln?” The assassin may not be accurate, but the date is.

Users can now anticipate fewer responses to these questions, nevertheless.According to Nayak, “We have trained our computers to get better at recognising these kinds of misleading premises.”

Argentina finds the remains of a tiny dinosaur with armour

image 189 1

BONA VISTA: Paleontologists announced the discovery of a small, armoured dinosaur in southern Argentina on Thursday. This dinosaur, which presumably walked upright on its rear legs approximately 100 million years ago, was previously unknown.

They said that Jakapil kaniukura, a dinosaur from the Cretaceous Period, would have been well-protected by rows of bony disk-shaped armour from its neck, back, and all the way down to its tail.

It was roughly 5 feet (1.5 metres) length and weighed 9 to 15 pounds (4-7 kg), which is comparable to a domestic cat.According to the researchers, the finding of Jakapil is a first-of-its-kind example of an armoured dinosaur from the Cretaceous period in South America.

It belongs to the thyreophoran dinosaur family, which also contains the armor-clad Ankylosaurus and the Stegosaurus, both of which have tails with sharp points and bony back plates.

Trump raid sealed search warrant is about to be released

Washington: US court officials were prepared to release a sealed warrant on Friday, detailing the historic search of Donald Trump’s Florida resort, which prompted to the former president and his allies to accuse the government of political persecution.

Even though he has had a copy of the search warrant for days and could have published its contents earlier, 76-year-old Trump backed its release.

download 2022 08 12T184809.080

One report claimed that some of the files Trump may have removed from the White House connected to nuclear weapons, and it was assumed that this was the focus of the search on Monday.

Attorney General Merrick Garland, the nation’s top law enforcement official, announced the highly rare decision to unseal the search warrant and the receipt specifying the goods confiscated by FBI agents. He claimed to have “personally approved” the dramatic raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Largo resort estate.

The former Republican president and his legal counsel have until Friday at 3 p.m. (1900 GMT) to decide whether to contest Garland’s court request. Trump, though, said he was actively pushing making them public in nocturnal social media posts.

“Release the documents now!” he wrote on his Truth Social platform, as he slammed the raid on his home as a “political weaponization of law enforcement.”

Andrew Weissmann, a former Justice Department official, said Garland had “called Trump’s bluff” by putting the onus on the former president to object or consent to release of the document.

The Justice Department motion to unseal the warrant noted — and did not dispute — statements by Trump’s representatives that the FBI was seeking presidential records and potential classified material.

According to US media, the search related to potential mishandling of classified documents taken to Mar-a-Lago after Trump left the White House in January 2021.

The Washington Post on Thursday cited anonymous sources close to the investigation as saying classified documents relating to nuclear weapons were among the papers sought by FBI agents during the raid.

Trump himself appeared to deny the claim, posting that the “nuclear weapons issue is a hoax” and suggesting the Federal Bureau of Investigation might have been “planting information” at his home.

Political firestorm

The FBI raid sparked a political firestorm in an already bitterly divided country, and comes as Trump weighs another White House run in 2024.

In a statement on Thursday Trump said his attorneys had been “cooperating fully” and “the government could have had whatever they wanted, if we had it.”

Leading Republicans have rallied around Trump, and some members of his party have harshly denounced the Justice Department and FBI, accusing them of partisanship in targeting the ex-president.

Garland criticized what he called “unfounded attacks on the professionalism of the FBI and Justice Department agents and prosecutors.”

In the hours before Garland’s remarks, an armed man tried to storm an FBI office in Cincinnati, Ohio in an attack that appeared to be a direct response to the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago.

The assailant, shot dead by police after exchanges of gunfire and an hours-long standoff, was identified as Ricky Shiffer.

The New York Times said a person posting on Truth Social under that name wrote “I tried attacking the FBI,” and said he hoped his actions would serve as a “call to arms.”

The Justice Department typically does not confirm or deny whether it is investigating someone, and Garland took pains to emphasize the law was being applied fairly to Trump.

“Faithful adherence to the rule of law is the bedrock principle of the Justice Department and of our democracy,” he said. “The rule of law means applying the law evenly without fear or favor.”

In addition to investigations into his business practices, Trump faces legal scrutiny for his efforts to overturn the results of the election and the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters.

According to the New York Times, a user posting under that account on Truth Social remarked, “I attempted attacking the FBI,” and expressed his desire for his acts to act as a “call to arms.”

Garland made a point to stress that the law was being applied equitably to Trump. Normally, the Justice Department does not confirm or deny whether it is investigating someone.

The Justice Department and our democracy are founded on the concept of faithful obedience to the law, he declared. “The rule of law” is the fair and impartial application of the law.

Trump is being investigated for his business operations as well as for trying to rig the election results and the attack on the White House on January 6, 2021.

Half-siblings of Meghan Markle continue to criticise her in a nasty manner because they are “incapable of keeping quiet.”

Samantha and Thomas Markle Jr continued with ‘cruel criticism’ against their half-sister Meghan Markle, according to a royal expert.

Thomas Markle Jr, during his appearance on GB News last week, endorsed the bombshell unauthorised biography which has been slammed as an attack on Meghan.

He also did not hold back when speaking about his half-sister, saying she needs to stay out of politics and “go back to rescuing chickens”.

Chatting with Dan Wootton, he touched on Prince Harry’s recent speech at the United Nations in New York City.

He said: “You know, you’re going to a memorial for Mandela at the UN building which is an open invitation to anyone in the general public. Then you start talking about peace and politics which has nothing to do with anything there at that point.

“Sussexes, they need to stick to rescuing chickens in Montecito and stay out of politics.”

Jennie Bond, former BBC royal correspondent, looked back on Meghan’s introduction to the Royal Family, claiming that Thomas and Samantha seemed “incapable of keeping quiet” about the Duchess.

Speaking during the 2022 Channel 5 documentary, ‘Harry & Meghan Vs The Monarchy’, she said: “Every other week it seemed, they came out with some more very cruel criticism of their half-sister.”

Imran Khan ran smear campaign against Pakistan Army through trolls:Marriyum Aurangzeb

by humaira

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and

Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb has said that Chairman Pakistan

Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former prime minister Imran Khan ran

smear campaign against Pakistan Army through trolls as he is foreign

agent and violator of Constitution.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said this while addressing a press conference

here on Thursday. Pakistani youth should be well cognizant of the fact

that when foreign funding on the name of a political party is received;

it is used for some particular plan. She said that when Imran Khan’s

theft and dacoity were caught; he began hurling accusations against

others.

The minister said that Imran Khan in connivance with the National

Accountability Bureau (NAB) got registered fake cases against Nawaz

Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, their daughters, PML-N leadership, Asif Ali

Zardari’s sister and the then other opposition leaders. She said that

Tayyaba Gull was detained for 22 days at the Prime Minister House to

take proofs from her against the NAB chairman who (Tayyaba) had

knocked his doors for being harassed by the chairman of Bureau. If

Nawaz Sharif committed theft, Imran Khan should have proved it

during his four years stint, she added.

She said the promises made with the public in the budget regarding

relief, reducing inflation and bolstering exports by strengthening the

agriculture, industrial and IT sectors will be fulfilled, adding that the

government economic policies are heading in the right direction.

She pointed out that the rupee has started appreciating against dollar

as a result of the government policies. She said the Prime Minister is

tirelessly working to reduce the difficulties faced by the masses.

The information minister regretted that Imran Khan has resorted to

shameful tactics including social medial campaign against martyrs of

Lasbela incident to divert attention from the foreign funding received

by the party from three hundred and fifty one companies and thirty

four foreign nationals.

She said the acts of Imran Khan have not only dented the image of the

PTI but also the country. She said that a PTI leader crossed the

Constitutional red lines when through a statement on a private

channel, he tried to incite mutiny in the ranks of the military.

Counting the development projects executed by the Pakistan Muslim

League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the era of former premier Nawaz Sharif, she

said that Khan on the other hand has only tried to stoke chaos and

anarchy in the country. She said that Imran Khan stands exposed and

that he can no longer hoodwink the youth.

Meanwhile Marriyum Aurangzeb said that Prime Minister Shehbaz

Sharif will officially launch the re-recorded national anthem at the flag

hoisting ceremony on the 14th August.

This was stated by Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum

Aurangzeb whilst addressing Digital Photographic Exhibition organized

in connection with Independence Day celebrations by Ministry of

Information and Broadcasting in Islamabad on Thursday.

The Information Minister said promo of the re-recorded anthem will be

unveiled for the public today. Marriyum Aurangzeb said the Ministry of

Information and Broadcasting has organized a calendar of activities on

the directions of the Prime Minister in connection with Independence

Day celebrations. She said an effort has been made to project the

cultural diversity and heritage of the country.

The Information Minister said the theme behind the Diamond Jubilee

celebrations is portrayal of achievements, the country has made in the

socio-economic, technological, transit systems and other realms.

She visited different stalls at the exhibition showing the collection of

country's coin and currencies, commemorative postal tickets and

paintings made by artists.

Nigeria’s president under pressure as insecurity spirals

Mounting attacks from jihadists and criminal gangs, including a brazen assault close to the capital, are creating a headache for Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari as he sees out his last six months in office.

Last month, the Islamic State group’s Nigerian affiliate ISWAP claimed a jailbreak outside just 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Abuja’s international airport, freeing hundreds of prisoners, including 64 jihadist commanders. Located in the centre of the country, the capital is far from the jihadists’ usual area of operations in the northeast — the city’s last major attack was back in 2015.
In the same month, a military checkpoint was attacked on the outskirts of the capital and a presidential security convoy was ambushed in the country’s northwest.
At least 40 worshippers were killed in June in a Catholic church in southwestern Owo, and last week five people were killed in Kogi state, in the centre of the country, when gunmen opened fire on a bus.
Idayat Hassan, head of the Centre for Democracy and Development think tank, said security was now front and centre of public concerns.
“There is growing pressure from Nigerians across all walks of life on the need to address the insecurity plaguing the country,” he said.
“The problem currently is nowhere is safe in the country — and nobody, irrespective of class or position in life, is safe.”
‘Helpless’ Buhari
Presidential elections are due to take place next February for a successor to Buhari. The former army general, first elected in 2015 and reelected in 2019, is scheduled to step down after two terms.
One of Buhari’s big campaign promises was to end insecurity — and the relentless violence has left him politically exposed.
“Most of us have been supporters of Buhari because he is a general,” said a member of the ruling party, Chief Frank Kokori, a former labour leader and rights activist.
“We feel he is negligent (with) the security of the country, that is obvious, and he has to wake up because he has squandered his goodwill.”
A security source based in the northeast and who asked to remain anonymous, said “Buhari is in an unenviable position.”
“Naturally he is to take responsibility for any security failures as the head of government, but the truth is that he is helpless.”
Despite hefty investments in the security apparatus, the situation has “continued to deteriorate,” he said.
Opposition lawmakers threw down the gauntlet last month, threatening to impeach Buhari if he failed to stem the violence.
But the announcement is widely seen as an empty threat, given the ruling party’s parliamentary majority.
Udo Jude Ilo, analyst and consultant with Thoughts and Mace Advisory, said the government had manifestly failed on the security issue. AFP

Taiwan holds live-fire drills as China ends largest-ever military exercises

Taiwan’s army held another live-fire drill Thursday after Beijing ended its largest-ever military exercises around the island and repeated threats to bring the self-ruled democracy under its control.
Beijing has raged at a trip to Taiwan last week by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — the highest-ranking elected American official to visit in decades — staging days of air and sea drills around the island that raised tensions to their highest level in years.
Taiwan has accused China of using the Pelosi visit as an excuse to kickstart drills that would allow it to rehearse for an invasion.
Lou Woei-jye, spokesman for Taiwan’s Eighth Army Corps, told AFP its forces fired howitzers and target flares as part of the defensive drill on Thursday morning. The exercise in Taiwan’s southernmost county Pingtung began at 0830 am (0030 GMT) and lasted about an hour, he said. Artillery trucked in from the coast was lined up side by side, with armed soldiers in units firing the howitzers out to sea one after the other, a livestream showed.
Taiwan held a similar drill on Tuesday in Pingtung. Both involved hundreds of troops, the military said. The military has played down the exercises’ significance, saying they were already scheduled and were not in response to China’s war games. “We have two goals for the drills, the first is to certify the proper condition of the artillery and their maintenance condition and the second is to confirm the results of last year,” Lou said, referring to annual drills. The latest exercise came after China’s military indicated its own drills had come to an end Wednesday, saying its forces “successfully completed various tasks” in the Taiwan Strait while vowing to continue patrolling its waters. But in the same announcement, China added that it would “continue to carry out military training and prepare for war”. In a separate white paper published Wednesday, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said Beijing would “not renounce the use of force” against its neighbour and reserved “the option of taking all necessary measures”. “We are ready to create vast space for peaceful reunification, but we will leave no room for separatist activities in any form,” it said in the paper. Tens of thousands trek rugged trail to glimpse Iceland volcano

Tens of thousands of people have braved a steep, rugged trail in Iceland to catch a rare glimpse of an active volcano after it erupted last week, spewing red-hot lava into the sky.
Tourism officials said Thursday that almost 23,000 people had made the difficult, hours-long trek to spot the volcano in the Meradalir valley, just 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the capital.
“We’ve been here for three, four hours and we never get tired of it, it’s always moving”, said Jean-Paul Couturier, a French pensioner on vacation in Iceland.
The hike to the newly-formed crater is a 14 kilometres round-trip across tough terrain, with a 300-metre (985-foot) ascent. The walk takes about two hours from the nearest car park.
Strong winds and rain have done little to deter crowds.
On Wednesday alone — when authorities reopened the site following a three-day closure — more than 4,600 people took in the mesmerising views of the red-hot magma.
The volcano is located in the Meradalir valley, an uninhabited area that would normally not attract more than a few visitors.
Known as the land of fire and ice, Iceland has 32 volcanic systems currently considered active, the highest number in Europe. It had an eruption every five years on average.
The latest volcano erupted in the Meradalir valley on August 3 and has continued at a fairly stable rate since, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said.
‘Nature’s power’
“It would be very easy for it to last as long as the previous one”, vulcanologist Thorvaldur Thordarson told AFP.
Last year, lava spewed from the nearby Mount Fagradalsfjall volcano for six months, the longest eruption in Iceland in more than 50 years.
Hikers making the trek on Wednesday were well-equipped with walking sticks, hiking boots and rain gear.
It was a sharp contrast from the shorts and flip flops worn by some of the first curious onlookers who initially rushed to the scene.
Observers watch from a safe distance the red-orange lava fountains spurting as high as 70 meters before falling back to the ground, forming a large blanket of magma and a volcanic semi-cone as it solidified.
The lava reaches temperatures of 1,200 degrees Celsius (2,192 Fahrenheit), the hottest lava produced on Earth, and has so far flowed almost two kilometres to the south across the valley. For French tourist Clemence Ernoult, the experience was as rare as it gets. AFP

Turns Out, Arjun Kapoor Doesn’t Have Malaika Arora’s Number Saved As…

Sonam Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor were at their best on Karan Johar’s show. What do you think?

The sixth episode of Koffee with Karan 7 featuring sibling duo – Sonam Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor – has got us all laughing. From talking about their relationships to revealing details about their school, there were quite a few confessions on the Koffee couch. But looks like Arjun Kapoor lied about one thing, and was eventually caught by the filmmaker. During the ever-amazing rapid-fire round, Karan Johar asked Arjun Kapoor how has he saved his girlfriend, actress Malaika Arora’s number on his phone. To which, the actor replied, “I really like her name so it is saved as her name. I really love the way her name sounds and looks. I have always liked Malaika.” We were totally convinced by the actor’s reply. Well, we must tell you to hold on for a bit longer.

Cut straight to the glam zone’s final segment where the guests have to call fellow celebrities and say, “Hey Karan, it’s me”. Hope you were able to guess it, now. Yes, Arjun Kapoor called Malaika Arora to help him win extra points. And, it was at this moment when KJo exposed Arjun Kapoor. He said, “By the way, Arjun Kapoor just lied to us about what he has fed her name in as. I don’t want to say what it is. It’s certainly not Malaika.”

We think it is safe to say that Arjun Kapoor was quite candid about his relationship with Malaika Arora. Karan Johar even asked him why he took so long to reveal his relationship with Malaika Arora to the public. The actor said, “I think I have lived a life being on the other side of the spectrum. I grew up in a disjointed family, and it was not easy to see what was going on, and still had to accept everything. I can’t just jump on her (Malaika). The first reaction could be “What do you mean?” If you ease people in, they will understand.”

Iraq to provide Lebanon with fuel for another year: Lebanon

Iraq has agreed to renew a one-year deal to provide Lebanon with fuel for its power plants in exchange for in-kind services, Lebanon’s Prime Minister said in a statement Thursday.

Iraq signed an agreement in July 2021 to give cash-strapped Lebanon one million tonnes of fuel oil to help keep the lights on as the country grapples with power cuts up to 23 hours a day during an unprecedented economic crisis.

“The Iraqi government, headed by Mr Mustafa al-Kadhemi, approved in a meeting today… to extend the supply of fuel to Lebanon… for a period of one year, under the same conditions as before,” Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s office said in a statement.

For the past year, Lebanon’s power plants have depended on the deal with Iraq to produce one to two hours of electricity per day.

Residents in the poverty-stricken country largely rely on expensive private generators for power the rest of the time.

Second firefighter dies after Cuban fuel depot blaze

Cuban authorities said Thursday a second firefighter has died battling a days-long blaze at a fuel depot that has also left nearly three dozen people missing or injured.

The 24-year-old firefighter from the country’s east had been receiving hospital treatment for serious burns suffered combatting the inferno.

Another 14 missing firefighters are also feared dead while more than 20 people are receiving hospital treatment.

“Overnight a patient died who was in an extremely critical condition,” said Health Minister Jose Angel Portal, quoted by the presidency’s Twitter account.

The body of a 60-year-old firefighter had been found in the disaster zone at the weekend.

Cuba’s fire brigade said Wednesday the fire, which started last Friday after lightning struck one of the tanks at the depot outside the western city of Matanzas, was under control, although the flames were not fully extinguished.

“In 48 hours it should be possible to enter the place of the fire and recover the bodies of those missing,” the fire brigade said Thursday.

Authorities said air surveillance flights had noticed a reduction in the amount of smoke coming from the site.

Four of the eight tanks at the depot — each with the capacity to hold 50 million liters (13.2 million gallons) of fuel — collapsed during the blaze that injured more than 100 people.

Extreme heat, price hikes impose tough choices on UK farm

Extreme heat, price hikes impose tough choices on UK farm

Euston (United Kingdom) – Pulling up some of the sugar beet that should be about handball-size by now, Andrew Blenkiron says the parched conditions have left the root veggies stunted and dried-up.

Record-breaking temperatures — as well as skyrocketing energy prices — mean the UK farm that he manages has had to make difficult decisions about which crops to save.

“This is about four to five centimetres (just under two inches) across,” Blenkiron says, holding up some undersized sugar beet in a vast and dry field at the Euston Estate farm.

“By this time usually we would expect them to be at least 20 cm in diametre, the sugar beet,” he adds, sounding worried.

The estate, 90 miles (130 kilometres) northeast of London, is now focused on watering its potatoes, which are in season.

But there is not enough water for its sugar beet crop, which has been left to fend for itself.

In this part of Suffolk in southeastern England, the soil is considered very fertile, as long as it receives enough nutrients and water.

But rainfall here in July was just 10 percent of the average amount — and over the last three months, it was only half.

Twice as much watering
The electricity bill at the Euston Estate farm is set to more than quadruple this year, Blenkiron, the estate director, tells AFP.

That will put it in the region of £370,000 ($438,000 and euros).

Arctic warming four times faster than rest of Earth, much higher than projections

Arctic warming four times faster than rest of Earth, much higher than projections

The Arctic has warmed nearly four times faster than the rest of the planet over the last 40 years, according to research published Thursday that suggests climate models are underestimating the rate of polar heating.
The United Nations’ climate science panel said in a special report in 2019 that the Arctic was warming “by more than double the global average” due to a process known as Arctic amplification.

download 14 6

This occurs when sea ice and snow, which naturally reflect the Sun’s heat, melt into sea water, which absorbs it instead.

While there is a long-held consensus among scientists that the Arctic is warming quickly, estimates vary according to the timeframe studied and the definition of what constitutes the geographic area of the Arctic.

A team of researchers based in Norway and Finland analysed four sets of temperature data gathered by satellite studies since 1979 — the year when satellite data became available — over the entire Arctic circle.

They found that on average the data showed the Arctic had warmed 0.75C per decade, nearly four times quicker than the rest of the planet.

“The take in the literature is that the Arctic is warming about twice as fast as the globe, so for me it was a bit surprising that ours was so much higher than the usual number,” Antti Lipponen, co-author from the Finnish Meteorological Institute, told

The study, published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, found significant regional variations in warming rate within the Arctic circle.

For example, the Eurasian sector of the Arctic Ocean, near the Svalbard and Novaya Zemlya archipelagos, has warmed as much as 1.25C per decade — seven times faster than the rest of the world.

Early stages of news

By Raja Furqan Ahmed

The earlier stages of organizing news were in Ancient Greek time however due to the lack of evidence we can‎’t talk much more about. During the Roman Empire around 1300 BCE, the earliest form of current event reporting was the Acta diurnal of the Empire. Acta diurnal is a Latin word means Daily Events of the Roman Empire. This was organized by the Roman government. They also hired scribes who carved the information into the stone. The Roman government posted the stones in public places like Markets so that people can read the news.

At the same time in China, the government forward official reports called Dibao from the capital to the local governors. After reaching reports to the local governors, they edited them. This means they decided themself which information was important for local people to read. They carved the reports onto woodblocks and printed many copies. They posted the reports in public places for people to read.

Throughout history, people know about current events through posted announcements or word of mouth. Everything changed with the invention of movable type printing presses, machines with small metal parts that move so that any text could be created and then many identical copies made.

In 1440, Johannes Gutenberg built the first printing press. This was the first time that the English language could be printed quickly and efficiently. This invention changed the way. Before it takes a lot of time but after this machine, it was much quicker and cheaper to print texts and almost anybody could do it.

Technology plays a key role in spreading the news. Soon, they were publishing or preparing and distributing papers, journals, and books. As more and more written material was published, more and more people became literate, or able to read and write. However, the government still controlled what people wrote.

In 14-century people wrote single-page news letter’s called corantos which only focused on wars and other current events. Few corantos were also criticized on the government and the churches but the government censored them.

1644 in England, John Milton wrote and published a famous coranto called Areopagitica. This speech also refers to the freedom of the press, the right to report the news without being controlled by the government.

Publick Occurrences, the first newspaper in the Americas, was published in Boston in 1690. It contained four pages and was supposed to be published every month but it was censored immediately and its one edition was only published. A politician from the British parliament in 1787 during his speech argued that the press should be allowed to report in House of Commons, the lower house of Great Britain. He spoke about the three traditional parts of European governments commonly known as the Three Estates. Then he pointed to the journalists and called them the Fourth Estate.

A few years later, in 1791, ten amendments to the US Constitution called the Bill of Rights became law. It talked about the freedom of religion, speech and also freedom of the press. This amendment protects the journalist rights. Even though journalism was no longer controlled by the government, most newspapers in the early 19th century were biased.

In sub-continent, William Bolts proposed to set up a printing press at Calcutta in 1768. His intentions were also to bring out newspaper but was not approved by the East India Company and he was ordered to quit India.
The first regular newspaper in India was started by James Augustus Hickey at Calcutta. It was entitled the Bengal Gazette or Calcutta General Advertiser. The first issue appeared on January 29, 1780. The paper was generally known after the name of its founder as Hickey’s Gazette. Hickey remembered as the pioneer of the freedom of the Press in the Indo-Pakistan sub-continent.
The second oldest paper was the Indian Gazette which appeared in November 1780, at Calcutta. Then followed in quick succession the Calcutta Gazette, quarto-size publication, in February 1784; the Bengal Journal in February 1785; the Oriental Magazine or Calcutta Amusement, the first month in the sub-continent, in April of the same year; and, lastly, the Calcutta Chronicle in January 1786.

In 1835, a newspaper called The New York Herald was started with the objects of providing unbiased news. This newspaper also tried to be politically independent.

In the 1850s due to the technological improvements, the movement was easier to spread newspapers from local to national. The invention of the telegraph revolutionized journalism again. The telegraph made it possible to quickly share information around long distances, international borders or oceans.

The telegraph was very expensive which also led to the creation of the first news agencies. A news agency gathers news reports and sells them to news organizations. The first-ever American news agency was the Associated Press, which was founded in New York City in 1846.

Newspapers of the 19th Century were mostly biased. They only told one-sided news story. To attract readers and to protect their interests, newspapers mostly published sensational stories that were not always accurate. These stories were exciting or shocking and many people wanted to read them. This led to the rise of so-called “yellow journalism.”

The early years of the 20th century saw the development of investigative journalism. Although newspapers continued to be popular throughout the 20th century, by the 1920s, they also had to compete with news on the radio. Listening to the news on the radio allowed the whole family to sit down and hear the news at the same time. 1950s television became popular and almost every family in the world had one.

Later on, in the 1990s the internet became popular and it was the decline for the newspaper. People use the internet and also social media to read news and information.

As technology plays a key role in the development and also spreading the news in society. It also reflects the reader mindset that they are willing to move with the advancement of technology.

Qatar World Cup start brought forward to November 20: sources

The World Cup’s start will be brought forward by a day to allow hosts Qatar to play the opening game, sources told AFP on Wednesday, just over three months before the competition gets underway.
Qatar will now play Ecuador on November 20, 24 hours earlier than planned, in a move that FIFA’s ruling council was expected to confirm soon, according to sources with knowledge of the matter.
The change will see the tournament, which was switched to November-December to avoid the Gulf country’s searing summer heat, keep to its tradition of the hosts playing the opening match.
Senegal and the Netherlands had been scheduled to play the first game on November 21, followed by England against Iran and then the official inauguration match, Qatar’s World Cup debut, that evening.
“There were discussions and agreement between the two respective teams and there was a request from CONMEBOL — the South American confederation,” one World Cup source told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity as no official decision has been announced.
“We wanted to follow the tradition that either the reigning champions or the host country be involved in the opening match,” the source added.
FIFA and the Qatari organising committee declined to comment on the change to the mega event that ends on December 18.
But another tournament source said action would be taken to help fans with tickets for the November 21 game.
“Any disruption will be dealt with so the impact is minimal,” the source told AFP.
Under the change, Netherlands v Senegal in Group A would be moved from 1:00pm (1000 GMT) on November 21 to a 7:00pm start. “It is a better slot for both teams for television and other areas,” said the World Cup source.
England’s Group B match against Iran is not changed.
100-day countdown
Companies with major deals linked to the World Cup expressed confidence that the unusual schedule change could be handled smoothly.
“It is something we will deal with,” said Jaime Byrom, chairman of Match Hospitality, which has a deal with FIFA to organise hospitality packages for World Cup matches and has locked in 450,000 tickets for the tournament.
“It is really not — compared to the other challenges that we could have faced or have faced in the past — a particularly large problem,” Byrom told AFP.
“We have to focus on those customers who are most affected and I guess in this case we will be looking at our Ecuadorian customers who are travelling from overseas, and making sure that they are on time for the match.”
The opening match is scheduled to be held at the 60,000-capacity Al Bayt stadium, one of seven new venues purpose-built for the tournament since Qatar was controversially awarded the World Cup in 2010.
The wealthy Gulf state is preparing a spectacular opening ceremony in the stadium, whose structure was inspired by traditional Arab tents. AFP

Fury wants to complete trilogy with Chisora

Heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury says he is coming back to boxing with a new trainer and wants to complete a trilogy against fellow-Briton Derek Chisora.
The WBC champion said in April, after beating compatriot Dillian Whyte at Wembley stadium, that he had promised his wife he would retire.
His promoter Frank Warren told Talksport radio at the weekend, however, that Fury had ‘itchy feet’ and wanted to get back in the ring. “I’ve decided to come back to boxing because I can be the first heavyweight champion in history to have two trilogies, one with Deontay Wilder and a second one with Derek Chisora,” Fury said on Instagram.
“I always said I’d fight Derek Chisora at the end of my career and here we are breaking all records again and setting precedents.”
Undefeated Fury drew his first fight with Wilder for the WBC title in 2018 but beat the American in rematches in 2020 and 2021. He beat Chisora in 2011 and 2014. Chisora is now 38 and had looked to be in the twilight of his career until he beat Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev on a split decision in London last month for the vacant WBA International title, a belt well below a world title.
Fury, 33, will also be waiting on the outcome of a rematch between compatriot Anthony Joshua and Ukraine’s WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO champion Oleksandr Usyk in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia next week.
The WBC champion said last month he would be willing to fight Joshua in England provided the bout was free to watch and attend.
Fury said on Instagram he had hired featherweight Isaac Lowe as trainer. “He knows me better than anyone on the planet and we’re a great team,” said Fury. REUTERS

British Open champion Smith mum on LIV Golf move

British Open winner Cameron Smith of Australia stayed silent Tuesday on reports he will jump from the US PGA Tour to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series.
World number two Smith spoke on other topics in Memphis at the St Jude Championship, the opening FedEx Cup playoff event that tees off Thursday at TPC Southwind.
But asked about reports that fellow Aussie Cameron Percy had said both Smith and Australian Marc Leishman were making the move, Smith kept his focus on the playoff chase.
“My goal here is to win the FedExCup playoffs. That’s all I’m here for,” Smith said. “If there’s something I need to say regarding the PGA Tour or LIV, it will come from Cameron Smith, not Cameron Percy.
“I’m a man of my word and whenever you guys need to know anything, it’ll be said by me.”
Another report that Smith had already signed his deal with LIV drew more talk about something else. “I have no comment to that,” Smith said. “Like I said, I’m here to play the FedEx Cup playoffs. That has been my focus the last week and a half, that’s what I’m here to do.”
Smith said he intends to play in next month’s Presidents Cup, when a group of non-European Internationals will face the United States at Quail Hollow in a PGA Tour-organized event.
“Absolutely, yeah. That’s something that we’ve been looking forward to for the last three years,” Smith said. “We missed a year because of Covid and that’s something that I look forward to being a part of.”
That event comes after LIV Golf events in Boston and Chicago next month, events Smith couldn’t play without being banned by the PGA and unable to compete in the team event. “I’m here to win the FedEx Cup playoffs,” Smith repeated when asked if playing for the Internationals meant he wasn’t playing those LIV events. “That’s my priority.” AFP
